IIRC no one ever cared about Korn.

It takes a bit of hubris to think that but for your pop song, the accident tied for the deadliest space accident in history, watched by millions of students, with a civilian teacher on board, would be forgotten.  This isn't puke-inducing like Toby Keith, but is still exploiting a tragedy for a commercial product.  Same for that stupid commercial where the married couple look for a house while the husband is on deployment, and he surprises her at the house they agree on.

Is there anything retards won't get offended and outraged over anymore?

Some legitimate media outlet (lol I know) should do a casting call for people who are regularly outraged or offended and out them on live TV..

Challenger is a historic event. Referring to something that happened 26 years ago is hardly exploiting it, especially when much of Beyonce's fan base is too young to remember it anyway.

And it's increasingly difficult to avoid offending anybody, given that so many people want so badly to be offended.

She wasn't really referring to a historic event as much as she was using the exact audio from said historic event for a song on a new album of music.  Seems like she's exploiting it a little bit, doesn't it?

Not even a little bit. No more than sampling speeches such as "the only thing we have to fear", "tear down this wall", "ask not what your country can do for you", etc.

It would be as fair to accuse Dr Rodgers of exploiting the situation to get some media time for her organization.

/Exactly as fair
//Which is to say, not really fair

And how many musicians have sampled Jim Jones, Charles Manson, or Adolph Hitler? Whole songs have been written about, and glorified, the Titanic, R Budd Dwyer, Patty Hearst, the Branch Davidians, Ruby Ridge, Ted Bundy, JFk.....

Musicians take inspiration from anywhere and everywhere they can. Whether its tasteless or tribute is in the eye of the beholder, but you have no right to deny them access to that reference.

Not even close.  Those were speeches meant to inspire, not actually sounds of disaster.  This incident would be like using a sample of "a second plane has hit the Twin Towers" in a song.

So, she's an insensitive twat. Not a surprise. Luckily the people that listen to her music probably never learned about the Challenger, given the state of our school system.

Beyonce's response:
My heart goes out to the families of those lost in the Challenger disaster. The song 'XO' was recorded with the sincerest intention to help heal those who have lost loved ones and to remind us that unexpected things happen, so love and appreciate every minute that you have with those who mean the most to you.

Song's lyrics:

Beyonce - XO Lyrics

You love is bright as ever
Even in the shadows
Baby kiss me
Before the turn the lights out
Your heart is glowing
And I'm crashing into you
Baby kiss me
Before they turn the lights out
Before they turn the lights out
Baby love me lights out

[Pre-Chorus]
In the darkest night I'll
I'll search through the crowd
Your face is all that I see
I'll give you everything
Baby love me lights out
Baby love me lights out
You can turn my light down

[Verse 2]
We don't have forever
Baby daylight's wasting
You better kiss me
Before our time is run out
Nobody sees what we see
They're just hopelessly gazing
Baby take me
Before they turn the lights out
Before time is run out
Baby love me lights out

[Pre-Chorus]
In the darkest night I'll
I'll search through the crowd
Your face is all that I see
I'll give you everything
Baby love me lights out
Baby love me lights out
You can turn my lights out

[Chorus]
I love it like XO
You love me like XO
You kill me boy XO
You love me like XO
All that I see
Give me everything
Baby love me lights out
Baby love me lights out
You can turn my lights out

[Pre-Chorus]
In the darkest night I'll
I'll search through the crowd
Your face is all that I see
I'll give you everything
Baby love me lights out
Baby love me lights out
You can turn my lights out

Perhaps, but we are talking about an exercise in marketing combined with waht computers can do in a recording studio here, not a musician.  We are talking about Beyonce

So now you guys are conceding that it's not the sample that's the problem, it's HER.

You should've just said that in the first place.

Unimpressed.  I remember when this song was a big hit, and it included audio of the Kennedy assassination.

And as fourth graders we happily sang this song and made mocking children sounds about kids losing their lives on the Titanic.

/yes, I remember the Great Folk Music Scare of the 60's, that fiddle and banjo crap nearly caught on.

Yeah, but Titanic sinking wasn't televised, wasn't live, possibly didn't happen at all

I don't really think I was suggesting that anyone should be denied the ability to reference a historical event in a song.   I just suggested that Beyonce was using audio from a historical event for an album that she may make a few bucks on.  Seems like exploitation to me but you can look at it any way you like...
