Well, sure. An 8-8 finish with a rookie QB, limited weapons in skill positions and beating the likes of New England and New Orleans after widely predicted to be a bottom-five team in August/September.

COTY?

That kind of joy makes me want a goddamn snack.

Yeah, but Woody Johnson is still in the Danny Snyder league of owner competence.  He'll screw it up again.

The owner is double named for a penis, so to make a dickhead move isn't surprising.

You get the coach you deserve.
LOL @ the Jets

Not a big Rex fan, but that was kind of cool to see that his players are behind him.

Of course, the Chargers players loved Norv so much they lobbied to keep him around for an extra season, and that turned out well, so, you've got that going for you, which is nice.

Agree 100%.  This team was absolutely atrocious.  It's unclear to me how they managed to win any games, let alone 8 of them.

I don't think he deserves it this year, but COTY will probably go to Belichick because he's Bill Belichick

NO. Achieving mediocrity after spending an assload of money in the offseason is not COTY material.  It's unemployment material.

You mean the Philbin who coached his team to back to back losses (including a 19-0 asskicking by...Buffalo?) to teams with nothing to play for that cost the Dolphins the playoffs? The Philbin who was at best complacent in the Jonathan Martin clusterfark and at worse actively involved in it? Yeah real CoTY material there.

With like 10 Pro Bowlers. He didn't work miracles, he almost got them to play to their talent level.

He'll probably win though, and that's OK. Definitely him over farking Philbin or Rex "I got my best QB hurt in the preseason for no reason and my team scores 9 points a game in a scoring league" Ryan.

Understood, which is why he will likely win it, but the Chiefs were 2-5 in their last 7. Rivera up coached the Cam Newton(!) led Panthers to the friggin' 2 seed. Reid will likely win it, but I'd be fine if it went to Rivera.

Thisx10...The Chefs had mad talent, Crennel coached like he had money against them, and the players just flat-out gave up. Reid is a solid coach, but I think Rivera should get the nod (he won't).

The Jets had a good defense and Sanchez played well in some games a few years ago. It's not a recipe for success. Geno may be a minor upgrade over Buttfumble, but he's not a solution.

This; seriously, I give Rex credit.  This was a season set up for him to get fired; yet somehow got the team to 8 wins.  Now if they can get him some offensive weapons, they actually might challenge NE for the division.

Smith's a different QB than Sanchez; there's a hint (just a hint) of fearlessness in him.  Sanchez seemed to be hesitant to do big things.

Are they playing in New Orleans? Then no. Are they playing somewhere not New Orleans? Eh probably not awful, solidly mediocre.

As a Pats fan, I had almost this exact same reaction when I found out Sexy Rexy would be back with the Jets.  So long as he's in charge, I don't see the Jets as a legitimate threat.  All they'll ever manage is to be a spoiler like they were for Miami.

Umm, there's this guy in Philly who also took a team from worst to first, and did it with his backup QB and with arguably less talent than on KC.  Might want to toss his name in the hat, no?

I still can't understand why they keep Rex. He had to have been part of the decision to go after Peyton to replace Sanchez (after sticking by a QB everyone else saw was not worthy to have been a first rounder let alone lead an NFL offense), then when that didn't work out offered Sanchez a contract that hamstrung the team for a year that could have been used to groom a different QB. I can't wait for the end of next season, when the Jets either have another mediocre season or worse, and people make excuses for it not being Rex' fault.

He's a great defensive coach but like his father cannot cut it as head coach. He's too much mouth and not enough skill.

2013-12-30 06:57:32 PM
I said at the start of the season that all the "dumpster fire" predictions for the Jets' season were ridiculous. Occasionally I'm right about something. This is not a talent-free team. But yes, 8-8 is in fact a fine job for this group and Ryan should be retained.

And who also did it with absolutely no expectations whatsoever (except that he would fail spectacularly like most college "geniuses").

Last three Pac-12 coaches to go to the NFL all won their divisions in Year 1. But yeah, college coaches are never successful.

Umm... DeSean Jackson, LeSean McCoy is a lot of talent, they won because they are in a horrid division with terrible teams. I'm not saying Chip Kelly isn't worthy of commentary, but Andy Reid took over a team with the #1 overall pick.

JohnHall: but Andy Reid took over a team with the #1 overall pick.

And the easiest schedule in the league. And 5 Pro Bowlers. And a new QB, one who was near the top of the QB rankings before getting injured in 2012.

I didn't say they were the same, just that he was a minor upgrade. With that being said, I'm not sold on Geno. When he's pushed from the pocket his instinct is to run backwards. That needs to be addressed. I like that he takes shots down field from time to time and that's a nice change, but we'll have to see if his awareness to step up in the pocket improves. The bright spot for me this year was the run game. The combo of Ivory and Powell worked fairly well between the 20s but like most years the Jets sputtered in the red zone. Thankfully they have a decent place kicker to put up 3 from time to time.

I pretty much felt the same way.  It's pretty much the same team as last year, with a different, but equally skilled, QB.  6-8 wins was where I expected.
