Just out of curiosity, is this trademark for a feline related product?

2013-12-30 10:28:08 AM
Good luck with that.  See how well "App" worked out for Apple.

If it's a replacement name for the "Metro" interface, they should try to buy out the "Fisher-Price" trademark instead.

Yeah, no trademark board in their right mind would grant this.

So the USPTO will, of course, give it and demand that Cyanogen, Valve, and a whole host of others pay Microsoft retroactive damages for their infringement.

But judge, there are evil people out there helping customers get what they want out of our products. They should be made to accept what we tell them they want.

In other news, in future Adolph Hitler will be referred to as "Joe Braunsweiger". Historians have determined, based on focus groups, that the name "Hitler" doesn't test well - tends to create negative emotional drift.

They want to trademark a common abbreviation?  Maybe they should trademark D-bag and sue everyone who refers to them by it.  Which would be everyone.

Begoggle: So Microsoft will be greenlighting unfunny, incorrect, and outdated headlines?

No, that's the admins.  Microsoft will, instead, ignore blatant trolls in the comments (sometimes engaging in trolling themselves under an alt) and ban people who out the trolls.

Welrd I thought they'd be the type to have a website and an Amazon wishlist to let us buy things for them...  Or was that Apple?

Makes sense. They couldn't get the trademark for the "Metro" interface, in reference to their Windows 8 UI - so they've been calling it the "Modern" interface to describe it, but nobody really knows what it's called.

I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the new branding for the RT operating system & devices.

How like a hipster to think that the '60s milieu is the only context for 'mod'.

'Case mods' and 'Mk I Mod 0 eyeball', for example, would like a word...

Pot, kettle.  Also, welcome to Fark.

Read TFA.  We don't know what 'mod' stands for, if anything.  Could be that MS deliberately wants an ambiguous term.

Current context: Mod = Modify / Modification

Future context: Mod = (c) and TM 2014 Microsoft Corporation

Does the USPTO ever just say no?

Why don't they drop this stupid idea and go back to their original plans of trademarking 1 and 0?  That would cover all their bases in one blanket sweep.

Because Apple would then try to patent quantum states.

A) They haven't said yes
B) Most of the Trademark applications around "MOD" involve another MS product, so the claim would be that Windows MOD (as an example) would be the MS Trademark

They are trademarking MOD because Windows 9 will be Opensource and Microsoft are going to encourage users to "mod" the OS the way they want.. They no longer will force users to use a interface they are uncomfortable with.. Folks, Microsoft have heard your cries and before you can whistle Dixie you will be able to repo sync your next Microsoft OS!

Open Source hackers will call their knockoff implementation 'S3M', in a very obscure reference that few will appreciate.

Maybe they should trademark "ugly" because they've cornered the market on that with the Windows 8 UI.

Point.  I *am* getting kinda tired about the Patent and Trademark Office being dumber than a bag of hammers, though.  *Really* tired of that shiat.

My comment, though, was just a dig at subby, whose headline seemed to suffer from tunnel vision regarding the context of 'Mod'.

/And now I'm getting nostalgic for Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In's old 'It's a Mod, Mod World' segment.  Ah, the sixties!

Look, regardless of what you say, we're going to keep calling it Metro.
