My phone is great but they gave it back to me when I said it was Sprint.

I'm not sure why this is amusing, it's not as though flip phones are worth anything these days. What's a crackhead gonna do with one, trade it for one thousandth of a gram?

"Oh you want my phone?  Here! :) Thank Goodness!!" and start to walk away fast mumbling words to the effect of "they" being after someone else for a change..

THIS. People steal phones to flip them for quick cash from people willing to buy one that "fell off the back of a truck." Nobody is looking for a cheap flip phone that is either hot or a knock-off product. Meanwhile you're stuck with an item that has built-in GPS that ostensibly should shut off if you take out the battery but could tip off police still.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you steal an iPhone isn't it pretty much useless after a while? I mean was it's reported stolen doesn't the service provider shut it off or disable a lot of it's functions or something? I'm really behind the times phone-wise.

I've got to remember to keep a decoy phone for mugging purposes.

You can sell them for parts.  gazelle.com is popular and there are kiosks in most major cities that will take phones with a photo id.  Most likely YOUR photo ID as you just got mugged.

That's called a 'kill-switch', and Apple, US cell phone companies, and other manufacturers have been resisting mightily on implimenting one.

Well, since no one, not even Gazelle, will buy back a flip phone, there's no point in stealing something you can't move.

Muggers aren't that stupid. They only take what they can sell.

Adam Carolla used to use awful icky red house pain on his radio in his truck. Truck stolen three times, no once did the radio get taken.

Well that's some serious bullshiat. Like I said, I'm out of touch. I'm just not into upgrading as I don't enjoy pissing away money I don't have but having a kill switch option just seems like common sense to me.

Not that I'm naive enough to think that common sense and consumer goods (or consumers for that matter) have ever actually been  things that have coexisted.

Take your sprint phone and go to Ting

You use the sprint network (same exact service) and pay much, much less. The wife and I change over, and now our combined bill is $46 a month (down from about $130).

Actually reminds me of the dipshiat photos they use on The Onion for surveying the public.

This is true.  I had a LG flip for a LONG time.  Long after smartphones became the norm.  I loved it.  Great quality, and one of the best cameras ever.
But my needs for a better device finally got me to upgrade.  Even then, I still resisted smartphones until only the last 2 years or so.

That wasn't an old Windows phone being shown in the article. That was an old Motorola V series phone. They are awesome. Very long battery life, virtually indestructible. Yes I still have one. The V195 thats been in constant use for 8 years now.

The one thing that would worry me about having a kill switch is if some script-kiddie is able to put a virus on your phone and shut it down on you.

You know, for the lulz

I used a BBerry for work for several years while carrying a flip ("clamshell') for personal stuff.  Changed jobs and turned in the BBerry, but got a new flipper from Verizon after my Sprint contract expired.

They sell them in Tokyo. After the phone shops are done, they get shuffled over to Akihabara. Plastic shells weighted with iron to feel like the real deal. Click-able buttons too.

A while back someone cut the lock on my locker at the gym and went through my stuff.  They took cash and credit cards but left my "dumb" phone alone.

Now I leave all my stuff in the trunk of my car.

Yes, yes it does.

Aww, I love that.

I have a desirable phone for the first time basically ever (I don't feel the need to chase the newest thing, but I definitely needed a new one and it was a birthday present.  I had a smart phone before this, but it was a $60 on sale model and I think anyone trying to flip it would be laughed at).  Holy crap am I now paranoid about breaking it out.  And the adoration from people is also weird... it's still a freaking phone.  It's pretty goddamn nifty, but most everyone doing the ooh and ahh-ing have phones no more than a year or two old.

Ah well.  I'll wait a year and won't have to worry anymore.  Got the newest bestest phone because I intend to keep it for a good long while.
