He can't, not yet.

If he rolls the tanks through Chechnya before the Olympics, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan will have a medal bonanza.  Other than turn Sochi into an armed camp, there's not a lot that Putin can do.

Most Olympic tourists have an allergic reaction to domestic uprisings. Putin may have to bus in Russians to fill the grandstands.  Talk about an easy target.

It's quite troubling that the venues were built with underpaid and unpaid imported labor without much oversight.  The whole place could be rigged to blow.

Then much of this tale would confirm your theory.  It's not a story of a flawless conspiracy, but of coverups after bungling.

After the initial bombing, Russian apartment block dwellers became quite vigilant.  Some found suspicious men lurking around their building late at night.  Having chased them off, they found the basement packed with bags of explosives.  The apartment block was evacuated, an APB put out for the men.

The men were captured by the local police and were found to be FSB agents.  This happened.

I simply do not understand why this happened. Why were these people killed? School shootings, abortion clinic and church bombings make more sense than this kind of random murder. Is the sole purpose of this bombing to cause mass fear, confusion, and panic? Is this the reason "terrorism" has such power over the minds of the citizens afflicted?Because there is no one person responsible, there is no one group targeted, their acts of violence seem random, and without reason? I don't understand, and I think that's kinda the point.

The Russians still occupy Chechnia.   There were many more Chechens killed than Russians.

I think my biggest problem with the idea of Grand Conspiracies is how they require a significant number of super competent people working together able to control wide spread events involving many people while at the same time all of them having a grand ability to keep long term secrets. Have you met people?

Have you met people who aren't hipster slackers? This may come as a shock, but not everyone thinks like you do, and some people are motivated by things other than money (which is really one of the poorest motivators, since nobody values the money itself, only the things that can be bought with the money). It is, in fact, possible to rally conspiracies, mobs, sometimes even entire armies with a binding ideology so strong that the individuals would literally rather die than betray their movement.

/and if they are willing to die, you had better believe they are much more willing to kill

And the more individuals involved, the more likely that one of them won't be quite literally willing to die than betray the movement.

Another big problem with conspiracy theories is how quickly they develop without any evidence.  Note the people claiming it's the CIA or Saudi Arabia (or both) or even Israel behind this.  Sure, people here on Fark may be trolling or trying to be funny when they say that, but I guarantee you there are people out there in this world who absolutely believe that without any evidence whatsoever.  Don't worry, they'll find "evidence" which will be completely convincing to themselves though.

I can't rule out the CIA or Saudi Arabia or anyone else, but anyone who claims to "know" this at this point is either a kook or directly involved in the conspiracy.

With the appropriate ideology and motivating factors, that chance can easily be reduced below the six-sigma threshold. Even among a set of over a hundred thousand individuals, betrayal can be made literally unthinkable, and only mistakes made by the conspirators or infiltration from the outside can reveal anything.

With all of the crazy people in the world bombing people or in the case about the US, shootings. I have to ask a question: Why not take it out on people who deserve it instead?

It's always some group of regular people going about their business. Lame. Make a statement. You have ONE chance to make an impact. Instead of children in school why not a NAMBLA meeting? Instead of commuters why not a biker gang's bar? The possibilities are endless...

The crazies might not be so crazy.   I found several articles from July/August that said the Saudi Intelligence Chief Prince Bandar (also former Saudi Ambassador to the US) met with Putin and asked for cooperation on Syria and other areas in exchange for 'protection' against Chechen terrorist attacks leading up the Olympics, and he said he had American support.  He also said Saudi controls the Chechen rebels who would perform the attacks.

These articles were leaked to the Russian press obviously by the Russians as it paints Putin in a strong, positive light.

I don't think the USA had anything to do with the attacks, but it is an interesting background to these attacks and shows how complicated geopolitical events are.

It is, in fact, possible to rally conspiracies, mobs, sometimes even entire armies with a binding ideology so strong that the individuals would literally rather die than betray their movement.

You should probably read a history book then, you know, they tend to contain a much more encompassing and long term account of events. Had you done so, you'd know that this has much more to do with the IIB attempting to carve out an independent hard-line Islamic country in the north Caucasus region than the Russian Federation's involvement in the rebellion back in 1994. Your statement would be like blaming abortion clinic bombings in the south on the Union Army's campaign in the confederate states in the Civil War. It's much more along the religious extremism line than purely nationalist/military ones.

Or maybe you can take a joke based on the idea that every time Chechen Islamic radicals blow something up that it's "Russian Forces Gone Wild" time for Chechnya and Putin passes some more laws to give more power to fight the evil that is Chechnya. This war has been going on for centuries and as it is tit for tat, the Chechen insurgency is about to get their tat.

So How about the Gulf Of Tonkin incident ? It wasn't known to be completely fabricated until they basically told us it was. That was kept under wraps for almost 40 years. They still haven't released official findings from the JFK era etc etc.

There are many many examples of this. When the majority of the players involved are low ranking folks who get an order or handed a job and told to do X. They don't have any idea what the big picture is. Only a few people do and those are the folks who keep quiet as it will usually means bad stuff will happen to them. The information is compartmentalized, need to know stuff. Many of the people in that line of work aren't going to be questioning their orders as they wont be involved in that line of work very long.

Think of it like this. Were the US soldiers that loaded the weapons bound for Iran during the Iran contra scandal aware of where those weapons were going ? I bet you they were simply told load X on plane Y. It isn't that hard to keep secrets, especially when someone speaking up could potentially lose their job. How many people reading this right now are aware of some BS going on in the company they work for but don't say anything because they like their pay check or dont want to be looking for a new job ? And that is only for the folks smart enough or in a position to connect the dots.

Yeah, easily said from a distance. However, when your (gay) Russian husband is back in Russia visiting family the cavalier thought of letting Russians die because "fark em" isn't quite as quaint.

Yes, Russia certainly has it's problems with gay rights at the moment. In fact, the husband is still deep in the closet while in Russia as it's just not safe. However, it's not like there aren't millions of Americans who would like for the same anti-gay situation to exist in the US and the rest of the world. The US is ahead of the game on gay rights over Russia, but still behind other democracies such as Canada. It's a reason to work to make things better in the US, Russia, and the rest of the world. Not a reason to cheer on innocent people being killed while trying to take the train or bus.

All the recent bombings overseas have been trains and buses.  Much easier than attacking a plane.

We can reasonably conclude that there are no organized terrorist cells in the US looking to bomb us.  If there were, we have plenty of buses, trains, schools, etc. that they could targeted.  Either that or the FBI has been 100% effective in infiltrating them and taking them down, which seems a stretch.

So we can we disband the TSA already?   They are completely worthless.

The US is ahead of the game on gay rights over Russia, but still behind other democracies such as Canada. It's a reason to work to make things better in the US, Russia, and the rest of the world. Not a reason to cheer on innocent people being killed while trying to take the train or bus.

It isn't just anti-gay, it's anti-black, anti-semitic.. pro-Nazi... it's pro-terrorism in general. Until/unless they develop a more general distaste for terrorism in general, they'er going to keep seeing it crop up domestically for a variety of reasons.

have any of you guys looked at the category page on Wikipedia for Chechnya? Almost everyone on that page died a violent death. The Russian death squads in Chechnya were (are)on par with the einsatzgruppen during WW2. Russia is merely reaping what it has sownl.

The Russians could've wiped out Chechnya decades ago if they wanted to, like they did Georgia. However, Chechnya is a Russian military playground for their latest combat toys. These 'incidents' only justify the next military tech and strategy testing.

DrPainMD: runescorpio: Fissile: The CIA is behind these attacks.  The West has a long history of using Muslims from the Caucus Mountains to attack the Russia.

Citation needed.

On July 3, 1979, United States President Jimmy Carter signed the first directive for covert financial aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul.

[www.naturalindependent.com image 450x298]

By mid-1979, the United States had started a covert program to finance the mujahideen, whose aim was later described by Carter's National Security Adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, as to "induce a Soviet military intervention."

the request was for a citation that "The CIA is behind these attacks."

What Carter did or didn't do in 1979 is completely irrelevant.

kindms: So How about the Gulf Of Tonkin incident ? It wasn't known to be completely fabricated until they basically told us it was. That was kept under wraps for almost 40 years. They still haven't released official findings from the JFK era etc etc.

You're arguing with someone that demands "proof of omnipotence" before he will accept the existence of successful conspiracies. It's just the "No True Scotsman" argument wrapped around his own circular reasoning ("A successful conspiracy is one nobody knows about, not even the conspirators, even if it accomplished all it's goals at the time, therefore it is impossible for a successful conspiracy to exist.")
