Why would anyone in their right mind admit to such an atrocity?
Vanilla Ice = Obviously worse than Hitler

Even though Debbie Harry did Rapture, it still came off as a novelty song. In terms of white boys doing rap,  Beastie Boys kicked that door open. I remember someone playing one of their cassettes and I was astonished when the guy told me they were white.

Sorry Vanilla Ice, but they released Licensed to Ill while you were in grade school, and by the time you made it onto the scene with To The Extreme, they had already released Paul's Boutique. Nothing personal, bro, but they were miles ahead of you.

Confabulat: Marshall Mathers II is a brilliant album.

That and "The Eminem Show" are both fantastic. The other stuff? Hit and miss, in my book.

I think he forgot to mention Marky Mark, who Eminem kind of clowned on MTV at one point.

Hoopy Frood: One-hit wonders lead to big investments that don't pan out, like his movie, which recouped less than a quarter of its budget at the box office.

it made for a pretty good RiffTrax though.

a small part of me wants there to be a Vanilla Ice cameo in the Michael Bay TMNT movie (if it ever happens at this point).

I'm ok with that road.

The last time I saw Vanilla Ice, he was playing in a small shed at a state fair and there were about 30 people in the audience waiting for the next act.

Hmm, who is generally regarded as the first "pop singer"? Not folk/country, not opera, no group acts, no other tricks (vaudeville, acting etc.). I'd be okay with old-fashioned crooners or similar styles, doesn't have to start with what's generally accepted as "pop" nowadays (i.e. pre-50s is okay).

Louis Armstrong would arguably be one of the first, no?

FuryOfFirestorm: Bieber's latest "concert film" flopped hard, making only $3.1 million this weekend, and the songs from his next album that he released online have been panned by critics, ignored by the media, and received next to no radio play.

Looks like the world's long, horrible nightmare may be over soon.

And someone else will come along to take the place of music industry priorities and media columns. You like One Direction? Wait until the media REALLY start writing about them.

FuryOfFirestorm: poot_rootbeer: FuryOfFirestorm: Looks like the world's long, horrible nightmare may be over soon.

Fat chance.  Even if he never lip-syncs another note in his life, Justin Bieber is firmly ensconced in popular culture as a Celebrity Trainwreck, and will continue to have a whole segment of the TMZ TV show dedicated to him until he OD's or goes to jail.

Oh, I know he'll remain part of the pop culture fabric, but at this rate, the only time anyone will mention him is when they do one of those "Where Are They Now?" shows on VH1.

Yeah I think for a while he will be like Bobby Brown. He wont be doing anything but will still eb in our faces on tabloids and TV. Thats why when he said he was retiring I rolled my eyes. He is just going away to revamp his image for a year or 2 and have a comeback.

1. Enabling entourage: Check.

2. Drug habit: Check. (Weed is one thing, but there's been lots of sizzurp allegations)

3. Floundering record sales: Check.

4. Asshat hired goons/bodyguards: Check (Snoop Dogg almost got a life sentence because of this)

5. Severe image problem: Check (There is such thing as bad publicity. Just ask Lohan)

I give the flameout two, three years tops.

They were real hip hop.  Plus Pop goes the Weasel had Henry Rollins dressed as Vanilla Ice.

Pop goes the Weasel could have written about Kanye, because it predicted him.

Let's all sing, pop goes the weasel
Pop goes the, pop goes the windin' of the weasel
I see the empty pocket needs a refill
I got a squad with a list of complainers
I should have started rape, rappers against phony entertainers
So we can make it known that we won't get swayed
It's ninety-one son, so somethin's gotta change

Gettin' paid to peddle sneakers and soda pop
(Pop pop pop)
Pop goes the weasel as drawers drop
(Drop drop drop)
Why not take your top ten pop hit
Fix the music and make senseless rhymes fit?
I guess it's the fact that you can't be artistic
Intricate raps, becomin' so simplistic
I gotta strong mind, it doesn't have to be spoon-fed
And I can read what doesn't have to be read
So some stay illiterate and feeble, legally licked
You go the ways of the weasel

(The weasel)
Pop pop goes the weasel, the weasel
Pop pop goes the weasel, the weasel
Pop pop goes the weasel, the weasel
(Pop goes the weasel 'cuz the weasel goes pop)
Pop pop goes the weasel, the weasel
Pop pop goes the weasel, the weasel
Pop pop goes the weasel, the weasel
(Pop goes the weasel 'cuz the weasel goes pop)

Hip-hop, got turned into hit pop
The second a record was number one on the pop charts
For those that get on heart that got a spot in the ghetto
Let no one forget about the hard part
Now in ninety-one we got a new brand, a new band
Lookin' like the same old Klan
Same old thieves that skeez so we gotta make sure
That real rap has got to endure
Why score all my points in one period?
Appearin' in complex structure like a pyramid
The paper for the media presence
Ya learn lesson from the face of false legend
Stop vexin' on the skills, ya ain't originate
The thin ice you skate upon will break and set ya straight
Ate up on the plate, now who's diesel?
Not the weasel, not the weasel, pop goes the weasel

Pop pop goes the weasel, the weasel
Pop pop goes the weasel, the weasel
Pop pop goes the weasel, the weasel
(Pop goes the weasel 'cuz the weasel goes pop)
Pop pop goes the weasel, the weasel
Pop pop goes the weasel, the weasel
Pop pop goes the weasel, the weasel
(Pop goes the weasel 'cuz the weasel goes pop)

Ya stole somebody's record then ya looped it, ya looped it
Ya boosted the record then ya looped it, ya looped it
Aiyyo, I came from Cali, and they hooped it, they hooped it
But now you're getting sued, kinda stupid
Boosted tracks get slaps, ya got no haps
To reach all four corners of the map
For kids in Kansas to those who speak Spanish
Doin' crazy damage so the wack gets banished
Can't manage the truth until you buy a way
Ya ain't quick so ya switch off the exit from my highway
To rest but a crook, had to take a second look
Ever heard of a chef who can't cook?
But the minister prime can lay laws
Hey yo, Pete Nice, rip the mic and go for yours
Goes for mine, I goes for mine
Find the prime won't eat the green eggs and swine
On line like the search in the hoody with the woody
Get a disc or tape at Sam Goody
Why'd ya run through the doors some left open?
Ropin' off the scenes of the crime smokin'
I got pub and I'ma nut like a scud see
Blowin' up like I'm throwin' up a beef patty
Sell-outs run 'bout like the measles

I for one am thankful someone is taking personal responsibility in society. Admitting to such a heinous crime against humanity just might get others to do the same. Will OJ finally admit his book wasn't fiction?

This is like arguing about who paved the way for 'Women's Rights' or the Civil Rights Movement.  Lots of people did, in lots of ways.

Vanilla Ice certainly contributed.  No, he wasn't the first white guy to 'rap'.  No, he wasn't the last.  So what?  Say what you will about it, the world loved his music for a time.  Last I checked, he still holds a few records for fastest selling hip-hop album (I haven't checked in a while).  And, if you actually listen to the guy he's a pretty level-headed, down to earth, and most of what he says makes sense.

2013-12-30 03:08:31 PM

Now, he just paves. And roofs. And installs bathrooms.

2013-12-30 03:23:55 PM

poot_rootbeer: In terms of the growing commercialization of hip hop through the late 80s and 90s, he's got a valid point. If "To The Extreme" hadn't gone multi-platinum in 1990, no major record label would have picked up "Slim Shady EP" in 1998.

Slim Shady EP was hardly picked up by what would hardly be considered a major label, Web Entertainment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Entertainment
After he made that, he was picked up by Dr Dre, and signed to Aftermath

Eminem is arguably the greatest MC ever. The Elvis argument makes more sense.

2013-12-30 05:11:10 PM
I forget when, bout some news columnist a while ago did say that Eminem was more comparable to Elvis than Vanilla Ice. One of the lyrics in "Without Me" makes fun of that.

I mean, you're lucky in this game too...

All the tweens that followed Justin either forgot about him when they hit puberty or they moved on to One Direction, much like Justin's fanbase originally followed the Jonas Brothers until he came along. Sometime in 2014, a new Big Tween Sensation will show up and steal 1D's thunder.
