Beasties Boys.

and David Cassidy paved the way for Vanilla Ice. an eternal golden braid.

Perhaps he meant literally. I mean, you know, all those years working on a road crew and all.

2013-12-30 01:08:33 AM
The road to Hell is paved with Justin Bieber.

2013-12-30 01:10:35 AM
I think the Beastie Boys are more responsible for Eminem.

I'll give him Bieber.

2013-12-30 01:11:43 AM
Brian Austin Green also deserves some blame for Bieber.

2013-12-30 01:13:41 AM
Elvis stole the black mans music before any of those guys.

If people would voluntarily listen to Vanilla Ice, they'd be willing to listen to anyone.

2013-12-30 01:20:03 AM
Inconceivable!  Ice seems like a nice dude, whereas whatever the Hell a Bieber is seems like a brat, and Eminem is responsible for EMinem.

I didn't know Vanilla Ice joined the priesthood.

And Eminem was better, while Bieber didn't really need his help. Also, since when is Bieber hip hop? He sings disposable pop music.

I don't think suburban white kids would have been buying Doggystyle and The Chronic if they hadn't been inured to rap music by what are now considered joke artists like Vanilla Ice.  Wild Thing, Ice Ice Baby and U Can't Touch This were the first three rap songs to get to number one in New Zealand, anyway (1989 and 1990).  Five years later over half the weeks at number one were rap songs.

I don't know how much I'd go with Beastie Boys.  By the time of Ill Communication, at least in NZ, they were usually filed as "alternative rock" (like Nirvana) instead of "rap".  I don't know if it was because they were white and not "gangsta rap" like everything else was a that time or what.  Maybe the guitars confuse people.

/I choose to ultimately blame Frank Zappa for Eminem

I remember a time in my life where I was upset that Will Smith was a sell out getting a sitcom.

In terms of the growing commercialization of hip hop through the late 80s and 90s, he's got a valid point.  If "To The Extreme" hadn't gone multi-platinum in 1990, no major record label would have picked up "Slim Shady EP" in 1998.

Yes, the Beasties predate him, as do 3rd Bass and Debbie Harry and a thousand kids who never got heard outside their school playgrounds.  But none of those acts had spent 16 weeks at the top of the Billboard 200.

2013-12-30 01:50:11 AM
Since all 3 suck big time, he's actually correct in tat sense.

2013-12-30 02:14:54 AM
By cultural and societal rights, Vanilla Ice should have disappeared after his one-hit wonder and failed follow-up projects. He should have turned into a junkie, alcoholic, meth-head, gone broke, gone to jail, have multiple kids by multiple women, have his mansion repossessed, sued by former associates/ his family/ friends, busted for selling his ass to truck drivers for rent money, caught some venereal disease, sold his story to some tabloid, gone to jail again, back onto the drugs again, repeat rinse repeat until Robert Van WInkle, also known as Vanilla Ice appears in the obit of a small town newspaper in Nowheresville, USA.

That he's still well known, in the media, has money, is not a junkie, and not dead is surprising and somewhat commendable, the bastard.

a quick wiki scan says he tried to commit suicide, was on heroin, he's a wife beater, he pulled a gun on a homeless man, and he has/had a pet goat.

so there's that at least.

No offense to Hersh, but that is one loose definition of "celebrity".

If you really want to claim lineage with Eminem and Bieber, go right ahead.

Sadly, Robbie boy is the least drama queen of the 3. Eminems emo shiat was particularly pathetic.

I'm not sure how long Beastie Boys stayed on the charts, but Licensed to Ill was the first rap album to reach number 1 (in the US anyway, don't know about elsewhere) Debbie Harry had a number 1 hit with Rapture nearly 10 years before Ice Ice Baby. Blondie had a better career than Vanilla Ice, but no other rap songs. Despite being all over the radio in 1991, all Ice Ice Baby did for me was make me want to listen to more Queen.

I think the best that can be said is that Eminem succeeded despite Vanilla Ice, whose career had become a joke by the end of the 90s

I can name all five in that picture.

Vanilla Ice
Chris Katan
Guy Fieri
Tiffany
Hershel Walker

Now, if you mean former celebrity, then 4 out of 5 fit that category.

Bieber's latest "concert film" flopped hard, making only $3.1 million this weekend, and the songs from his next album that he released online have been panned by critics, ignored by the media, and received next to no radio play.

Looks like the world's long, horrible nightmare may be over soon.

Fat chance.  Even if he never lip-syncs another note in his life, Justin Bieber is firmly ensconced in popular culture as a Celebrity Trainwreck, and will continue to have a whole segment of the TMZ TV show dedicated to him until he OD's or goes to jail.

Oh, I know he'll remain part of the pop culture fabric, but at this rate, the only time anyone will mention him is when they do one of those "Where Are They Now?" shows on VH1.

Is this guy a pathological liar? He was born in 1967, and Ice Ice Baby was released in 1990. That makes him 22, but he claims he was just 16? Wasn't all the lying about his past the main reason his career disappeared so fast?

No, if that was an actual problem 99.9% of rappers wouldn't have made it past their first single.  Bunch of MFA types from white-collar families going off about how hard it was to grow up on the streets or whatever, not exactly the unvarnished truth there.

So what? To the Extreme quit certifying within six months and Vanilla Ice stopped being profitable. One-hit wonders lead to big investments that don't pan out, like his movie, which recouped less than a quarter of its budget at the box office. Licensed to Ill has been a top catalog seller for more than 25 years and the Beastie Boys' entire LP catalog was multiplatinum when Eminem met Dre. That's what major labels want, sustained profits.

And there's this, relevant for about the minute after the cue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjospDK0L_I&t=6m07s

Relevant because 3rd Base beats down Vanilla Ice.

3rd Bass's 1991 follow-up, Derelicts of Dialect, had a new target in fellow white rapper Vanilla Ice, who was the focal point of several tracks on the album, most notably "Pop Goes the Weasel." The track depicted Ice as a culture thief who watered down the sound of rap in order to pander to a mainstream audience, while depicting 3rd Bass as more respectful of the genre's traditions. Ice was also criticized therein for his refusal to credit artists whose music he had sampled (from the song Under Pressure by David Bowie and Queen) for his 1990 hit "Ice Ice Baby." The video featured punk rock icon Henry Rollins dressed up as Ice, who received a "beatdown" by 3rd Bass at the end. Fueled by the heavy backlash against Vanilla Ice at the time, "Pop Goes the Weasel" gave 3rd Bass their only Top 40 single (peaking at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100), and helped propel the album to gold status.

Mr Van Winkle,

I was 14 when the Beasties came out with LTI. They were played at every party. Now my sister listened to the Ton Loc for a week, and I had a friend who enjoyed third Bass, but never do I recall anyone ever playing, or liking Vanilla Ice. He was purely a pop product meant for late show appearances, and awards shows. As far as black rappers, pretty much the only two listened to in our area was NWA, and Too Short.
