Gay, celebrity comes out?  An interracial couple?

Cool beanz. This is another inevitable step in the journey to social acceptance and tolerance of gay people being the new norm.

Sad about the cancer thing.

/TY to my TF benefactor. I am not worthy!

All this time I thought she was out already.

Now I know why the local morning news anchor loves her so much.

WTF is GMA?

Genetically Modified Americans?

Well, that *would* kinda explain Lauer.

So Robin Roberts likes women. Makes sense. Lots of men struck out while trying to hit on Robin Roberts.

So what?

She doesn't have a book coming out.

She isn't in a movie about to be or has already been release and needs a boost.

She doesn't have a album about to be released.

GMA already has better ratings than Today, in part thanks to her cancer. She should've came out when the ratings start to slump again and she do a 5 part GMA special report "Lesbian sex in America" to boost ratings again.

/horribly jaded to women in media coming out
//good for her
///especially if it isn't milked to hell by GMA

Homosexuality is not uncommon; why is this news?

I have had a number of friends that are gay and in broadcast news.  I think most news anchors are LGBT.

I wouldn't f#ck Sam Champion's p#ssy with Robin Robert's dick.

\actually, I would.  Sam is kinda hot.

Meh, get back to me when Jeremy Renner decides to stop pretending the the guy he's living with is his business partner and that his kid isn't just a random oops baby with a one night stand.

Now that one was a shocker. Really.

Ms. Roberts? I was actually taken by surprise with her a little. Of course I don't really look into the personal lives of celebrities at all so they have to be fairly obvious on camera, enough to trigger my admittedly faulty gaydar (ie Sam Champion).

Seriously, what constitutes "coming out" anymore?

Seems to me that "coming out" implies hiding something. I don't think Robin Roberts ever hid her sexual orientation as an adult. She just lived her life privately. There's a difference. And then she acknowledged the person that she loves in a public post. There was no closet. A closet would imply someone asked her, "Hey, you into men or women," and her answering, "Oh, c'mon, men, of course."

Ricky Martin came out. Clay Aiken came out. Lance Bass came out. Meredith Baxter came out.

Jodie Foster, Anderson Cooper, Robin Roberts? Not so much.

Does the question even merit asking anymore? Did it ever? I just imagine we'll see more and more of this -- people casually acknowledging their sexuality in their own damn time. It shouldn't be our business, except to maybe say in our heads, "Oh, that's nice she has someone who loves her and who is a nurse to boot during what must be a difficult time for her. Bully for her."

2013-12-30 12:03:19 PM
Who cares?  Why does anyone, gay or straight, think their sexuality is anyone's business but their own and their partner's?  I've never understood the need to publicly proclaim which set of genitalia you prefer.

I'm not sure I understand it either, but the fact that this is news shows that people still care.

I thought we weren't supposed to give a shiat.

/i've been doing my part

Coco LaFemme: Who cares?  Why does anyone, gay or straight, think their sexuality is anyone's business but their own and their partner's?  I've never understood the need to publicly proclaim which set of genitalia you prefer.

Because there are still plenty of people who are interested in using the law to harm gay people?  Because there are plenty of kids and teens that are being shamed, disowned, bullied, and kicked out of their houses for being gay?  Because it is still possible, in a majority of states, to be fired and evicted for being gay?  Because gay people still aren't equal before the law?
It wouldn't have to be an issue if a bunch of hateful busybody farkwads didn't make it such an issue, but they do so all us gays have to deal with it.  If haters didn't hate, we wouldn't have to act like it's such a big farking deal, but haters keep on hating so we have to keep on saying "we're here, we're queer, and what is your farking problem anyway?"
I mean, I'm glad everyone here on fark can be so cool and above it all, but raising the visibility of gay people is still very, very important.  Robin Roberts coming out is huge, because...
A) She's an extremely popular host on the top morning show, which tons of older, more conservative, more "real American" types watch.  Her coming out challenges their perception of what gay people look and act like.  Remember, there's still plenty of Americans who think they don't know any gay people, and many who still think all gay people act like the attention whores at pride parades.
B) She's black, and let's face it--it can be extra hard to be gay and a minority.  Don Lemon referenced the specific difficulty of being black and gay when he came out, so imagine how nice it is for young, black, gay women to see someone like them being happy, successful, and supported.
C) ABC's statement of support for her coming out adds to the growing overall corporate support for/approval of gay rights.  And since this country is essentially run by corporations, this is very, very helpful in continuing to shift the tide of public opinion and tenor.  Is ABC benefitting in terms of ratings and attention from this?  You betcha.  But it also does a real service to the fight for gay rights, and it shows how far we've come that a major TV host coming out is now a rating plus as opposed to a minus.  Ellen coming out in 1997 cost her both her show and her general career for a long time.  Now, Robin Roberts coming out is something ABC wants to exploit for their gain--this is a significant turn-around.

Roberts is a popular, nice, positive TV show host, and by coming out she is helping to show that, in fact, gay people can also be nice, respectable people.  Is it farking stupid that we have to prove ourselves in this way?  Yes it is, but this is the game the haters have forced us to play, and we just scored a decisive goal.  So thank you, Robin Roberts.

/And I so called it.

2013-12-30 12:56:02 PM
When Robin worked at ESPN, she would call the highlights of the 2 "worst" games of the week (like Houston Vs. Jacksonville this year) while Chris Berman and Tom Jackson would do the rest. One year during a preseason game, a coach of a team was asked at halftime what his goal for the team was, and the coach said "not to have Robin Roberts do highlights of our games this year".

I for one will not be shocked when the same people defending the duck dynasty guy are calling for her to be fires

She made reference to her partner in a post thanking people who meant a lot to her in the last few years. That's not publicly proclaiming a preferred set of genitalia any more than a straight person thanking their spouse is doing so. Or in other words, not at all.

I think her battle with cancer gaver her a strength and perspective that many of us lack. But who ever thought she was straight? I've known she was gay forever.
