Off piste != out of bounds, just off trail, at least the way I've usually heard it used... which can also be dangerous, too, of course.

That said, head-rock collisions are rarely a good thing, inbounds or out of bounds.

Good luck, you inhumanly fast bastid.

/ pro'ly dodged a few, skiing helmetless many moons ago

(As I now rethink wearing a helmet when skiing isn't as dorky as I previously thought.)

The crazy thing is that he was wearing a helmet:   "Schumacher was wearing a helmet when he fell and hit his head against a rock, his manager Sabine Kehm said."  That must have been some fall.  Perhaps off the ski lift?

Off-trail in the French Alps.  Could have been anything up to and including an entire farking mountain.

A helmet reduces risk of serious injury, it doesnt completly prevent it.

OscarTamerz: There are 2 kinds of intracranial bleeds, eidural and subdural. Natasha Richardson had an epidual bleed and when she rejected the ambulance it pressured her entire brain onto her brainstem in what's called a herniation and she died. Sarah Burke the Canadian woman Olympian who had the half pipe accident and died in Utah in 2011had a subdural bleed from a ruptured vertebral artery and was essentially dead on impact. If he was walking and talking then it's most likely he had an epidural bleed and if he didn't herniate he should survive. The fact that he was transferred from one hospital to another is worrisome.

Well she was fine immediately after, like Schumacher was and then waved off paramedics then died hours later after being back at the hotel. Its farked up how the brain works but one thing I have learned after my concussion is you don't fark around when it comes to your brain. Go to the farking hospital.

And make sure that they actually check you out properly when you go to the emergency room. With both of my sister's concussions she and my parents had to demand a scan, the ER was going to send her home even though it should be common knowledge that brain bleeds can be so slow that by the time you start showing symptoms it could be too late. Fortunately she was fine both times (well, the first one might be what gave her epilepsy and the second one made her eyes stop working together properly). but the ER would have sent her home without checking before there was even time for symptoms to develop in a Natasha Richardson scenario.

My one cousin lost one of her kids because the little neighbor kid hit him in the head with a board. They checked him over, thought he was fine, watched him all day and there were no signs of a problem. They found him dead the next morning. They were told that even if they'd have taken him to the doctor, given the very long time frame, there was no way anyone would have caught it before it was too late without a CT scan (which the hospital wouldn't have automatically done anyway).

As much as I hated him as a kid, first for punting Damon off, all the team orders and then for steamrolling everybody for all those years on the trot: Get well soon bloke. Like seriously. The sport needs its elder statesman's.

One of the greatest in F1 history.  I used to root against him because he won too damn much but there's no denying he's one of the best.  I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Come on, Michael!  You can beat this!   All thoughts to you and Corinna and family!

i know. i was trying to translate his popularity for an american audience. perhaps it would be as if peyton manning AND michael jordan were both hovering near death after running into each other on the ski slopes.

According to BBC, this was the area they were skiing in:

"The 44-year-old German was skiing off-piste with his teenage son when he fell and hit his head on a rock.

news.bbcimg.co.uk

The accident happened lower down the slope of the 'Dent de Burgin' peak"

Interesting (but not in a good way).  I had read that he was in a medically induced coma to bring the swelling down.

I seriously hope he pulls through.  I couldn't stand him for a while (mainly when he was battling Jacques Villeneuve) but I have nothing but respect for the man.  There are far too living legends in F1.
