Was it really necessary to point out that the bear was black?

Yeah, it was pretty much a given considering how those bears tend to be.

A squirrel walked right up to me yesterday, put its little hands right on my shoe and just sat there looking up at me.

I had nothing for it so I just stood there and it walked away, looking a bit disappointed.

I think that animals are getting the idea that they can just go to people for food these days.....

Or an earthquake. Yeah, "trail of destruction" is sort of drama-queenish.

The only reason the bear was disappointed was because there were no picnic baskets to take.

/very aware that Yogi was a brown bear.

Is that really bad?

For an animal to do this is a sign that they're around people constantly; and Detroit is a perfect example of how people don't give up their habitable spaces. They're our food, shelter, water and sense of place all in one. Once humans are in an area, we tends to be there a long, long time.

So why shouldn't we help to take care of the animals who were here before us? There's plenty of wild, uninhabited land in this country, much more than what's covered by cities and towns.

I read stories of wildlife being cared for at a vet and being released, or have my day brightened by squirrels, chipmunks, sparrows and the like, too often to be bothered by this.

We do need to send a very strong message to bears that they're not generally welcome at a party, though. Lots of yelling, rattling cans full of change and possibly some bear spray should work.. if a bear goes through that enough times, I'm fairly sure it'll get the message that "people at home = bad news."
