I don't have a problem with GMO foods on the scientific level, but I do have a problem with Monsanto due to their business practices.

There are also concerns with large scale industrial farming with regard to diminished agricultural variety, the risks that brings in terms of large scale crop losses due to diseases when almost all of a given crop is of the same genetic strain, and the loss of market variety due to concentrating on only the most mass-market friendly cultivars.

I have some soda full of HFCS that should go with that.

And I'll make burgers on buns with a lot of gluten in them.

Let us also add that Monsanto hires Dick Cheney's blackwater mercenaries to protect their stuff from people who see a future of crop failure with one strain of derp.

This, pretty much.

I suspect we also have them to thank for the fact that most fruits and veggies you get in the stores these days don't really have a taste.

It's bad because there is a consensus that says there are too many humans on Earth, and the continued ability to feed them all means there is no much needed starvation/die-off coming any time soon.

The science on that is settled, btw.

Yeah I could give a fark about Frankensteining some genes together, they bought their ticket, they knew the risks...

But as for Monsanto's heavy handed 'business' practices I can't abide that.  'What, you wanted to save your heirloom seeds and not pay us our taxes?  Too bad, so sad comrade!  You're sued.  You see all your neighbors use our seeds and it seems you were neglectful enough to allow one to pollinate your puny non engineered foodcrop.  We'll possibly settle out of arbitration if you switch to The Monsanto Family brand quality engineered foodstuffs.'

/the best part is you don't even have to really be infringing their illegal copyright for their tactics to work.

Monsanto has long been a company that does anything for a buck and damn the environmental consequences.  It's their corporate culture you might say.  Not actively evil, just amoral and opportunistic.  So while collecting data by itself sounds innocuous, I can see why some oppose anything they do.

Really?! Everything I've read said that that the human population is nearing its peak and in the next generation will actually start declining as birth rates in industrialized nations begin to fall. Europe, Russia and China already are seeing this happen and the U.S. isn't too far behind.

I would like to see them try some.of these heavy handed tactics on a farm owned by a large food processing company. Most of the farms are in subsidiaries so they can be bought and sold if needed or desired.

I'm sorry that you can't handle the kinds of things that Monsanto does in tandem with the US government, but it's important that people who've forgotten 'Nam, PCBs, DDT, etc. remember that Monsanto is not an agricultural company.

They are a chemical company, and not infrequently a chemical-warfare company.

It would be so much easier to trust Monsanto's claims about their GMOs, if they weren't so evil in their business model.

2013-12-29 07:21:59 PM
Monsanto is the literal definition of an "evil corporation." There is nothing they won't do to make money, no ethics they won't violate, no morals they won't forgo. They are an investor's wet dream and they exist only because we allow them to.

Considering the company's history, it would be strange for people not to be concerned about any power plays being made by Monsanto. If they do something, it is to make money and nothing else. The people running the company are literally just cogs in a soulless machine, and it's a wonder that the company is not the first instance of a self-aware AI.

Love, I don't have to be expose to disturbing images to acknowledge Monsanto is the devil any more than I have to watch a muslim behead an American on the internet to know it is an evil act. I don't want to see things I (a) can't unsee and (b) had nothing to do with. get it? Also, as for your DDT reference, it has never been proven to be harmful to humans, just softened some birds egg shell, so the stupid, murdered hippie woman that championed its banning is probably the worst mass murdered in history considering the number of people that unnecessarily died of malaria since she opened her big damn mouth.
