It's probably a good thing she didn't go to a local skateboard shop then. She really would have flipped the fark out over the price.

God forbid that you actually want to pay a little extra for a good quality board.

Nobody wants to pay for quality. They'd rather get something cheap that breaks in a year than something expensive that never breaks.

Touché. Except, I remember as a youngin' that the skateboard shop was THE place to go - for boards, parts, advice...or just good conversations with good people.

Can't say I'd find any of that in the aisles of SprawlMart.

If you're complaining over the price of a Nash, then you really are ghetto trash and deserve nothing.

Real skaters buy their gear at skate shops.

I wonder how often people just ride out of WalMart on the bikes. I never see them chained down, and it seems a running gag that some kid is test riding one while their parents to the rest of the shopping. Just wait until the double doors are about to open and go. By the time the greeter realizes what's going on you're outside.

My decks in the order that I remember buying in high school  Brand X Weirdo, Vision Gator,  Hosoi Rising Sun, Bones Brigade Tony Hawk, Powell Peralta Cabelerro Blue dragon. I had innumerable used and traded boards as well .I was pretty good in my day, too. Not like the insane, crazy stuff they can do now, but I could impress the little skater girls at the mall. Now I'm old and my bones and joints get strained when I watch the X-games too loud.

By the way, I saw a new brand of coffee there called Master Chef. At its everyday price of $1.88 for a 10.5 oz can, the cheapest coffee I've seen outside of a flea market in many years, so of course it needed trying. It turns out to be drinkable with milk & sugar, I've paid more for worse, so I might buy it again if I see it marked down. It might even be worth stocking up on at say $1.50.

The trick is to live very frugally for a couple or three months, e.g., buying the least expensive coffee and toilet paper and less meat than usual, then splurge on an item or two that I've had my eye on. Say a decent skateboard at a skateboard shop if I liked that kind of thing, a large package of good meat if I see one at a good price, or a blow-up blond. Maybe even the local female streetwalker who's often out when I'm walking the (ex's) dogs, who by the way hasn't been around for a couple weeks so I hope she's okay; it's not often I'll see anybody look at me like I've registered as an individual person, given the amazing facility for blending in that settled on me as I aged and which can be a relief, even if her interest would be mostly in my walking-around money.

Perhaps eventually I'll get a cat: sometimes the Humane Society runs "specials" on older cats so you can pick one up for $15-20. I could share my meat, eggs and fish with her to supplement the expensive dry food I'd buy with my savings from not spending more than $12 a liter for booze; they also have programs to help poor old people afford vet bills, even if I'd still have to scrape by on rotgut vodka for a couple weeks.

It's a good thing I've got enough underwear and socks to last a long time, which is helped by the fact that holes in my briefs that don't affect its function don't bother me and it's not like I'll get a chance to undress in front of anyone I'd want to impress. (A hole in a sock gets it thrown out though; for that one buys multi-packs of the same thing, three blue crew socks are better than one.)

As for the protagonist in the linked-to story people who do that shiat should be publicly pilloried with an explanatory sign the first time, pilloried and whipped the second time, and the third such offense should get them taken out and shot. Low-paid service workers have it bad enough already: if you're not going to pay them a living wage at least send the message that you won't stand for them being threatened or whapped. Besides which any medical care a Wal-Mart employee would get the tax-payers would pay for, so we can save the money that now goes for incarcerating such miscreants and the money we won't have to spend for Medicaid because fewer people get battered to help poor old people maintain a quadruped companion.

Anyway. As is usually implied in these things, EIP. IYKWIM.

The One True TheDavid: Low-paid service workers have it bad enough already: if you're not going to pay them a living wage at least send the message that you won't stand for them being threatened or whapped.

Hahaha, you're funny. Low-wage workers are interchangeable robots as far as the Job Creators are concerned. Sometimes a robot gets dinged up, you just hire a replacement.
