It's just not doing a good job.

I've been living there for what? 25 years, maybe.

That is longer than the life expectancy of humans only a few millennia ago.

I can live with that for the sake of my books and knick-knacks.

People need to get over the irrational fear of bacteria.  You are swimming in them all day.  All the purell, bleach and whatnot just creates worse bugs than what is naturally present.  Your body can deal with the normal ones just fine.

2013-12-29 12:24:27 PM
What difference does that make? You've never gotten sick from your houshold items before, and that's not going to change because of a "study".  This is just like those breathless articles about "millions" of bacteria on your toothbrush.  Now suddenly it's going to make you sick? Your immune system has no trouble keeping up with your general environs, and counting the bacteria won't change that. Want common household items to kill you? Move somewhere I like New Guinea where your immune system has never seen the local bugs.

YOUR HOUSE IS TRYING TO KILL YOU

No it's not. We're doing a fantastic job ourselves by using all those "kills 99.9% of bacteria and germs" cleaners.

The 0.01% that is surviving is what's becoming antibiotic-resistant super-bugs.

We're not supposed to live in sterile environments.

brantgoose: That is longer than the AVERAGE life expectancy of humans only a few millennia ago.

When everyone died between the ages of 0-10 the average was REALLY LOW. After that, people live for a long time. Look at all the old timers in India who get by into the 100s in what we would call squalor by modern bacteriological standards.

The Greeks routinely lived long enough for white haired, feeble old men and crones to be relatively unremarkable.

Agreed.

Worked in medical places for over 30 years and as long as I used proper protective gear (gowns, gloves, etc.) and washed my hands regularly, I've been fine.

Exposure to normal flora isn't a big deal, as always the big honking deal is wash your hands. The worst you worry about is a seasonal cold or flu (and flus are minimized in winter by flu shots.)

FYI: Washing machines get rid of an amazing 94% of germs in a normal load... adding bleach ups this a few points to 99%.

Just proves that soap and water are your friends.

As someone who teaches Microbiology, all I have to say is "Move along, nothing to see here."  Give these bugs a little moisture, food, and the right temperature and they will hang around forever.  And guess what? If things get bad, some of them (particularly tetanus, anthrax, gangrene, botulism) form protective coverings and can stay dormant indefinitely.

Besides, the article cites S. pyogenes and S. pneumoniae.  These bacteria are mere amateurs compared to Superbugs.  Let me know when MRSA or CRE is found to live on surfaces for years on end and then I might be worried.

Anyway, don't be Typhoid Mary - Wash your hands.

If you can see it, photons have bounced off of it, and entered your retina. So if you see a guy's dick at a urinal, that dick is entering your brain via your pupils.

Aromatic and volatile chemicals would still be there. As would fine particle sulfur (smell of rotten eggs). Filth is only one of the things you can smell, which is usually the broken down proteins from decomposition of living things in the filth.

Taste works with smell for more complicated taste, but is able to measure levels of salinity(salt), sugar/starch (sweet), acids (sour) and bases (bitter). This let's your brain know if the thing in your mouth is food, what levels of nutrition it may provide and whether it will chemically burn your throat when you swallow it.

/the more you know........*

This may get some "tinfoil hat" comments, but I honestly don't think that we're too far off from seeing that happening.

We're living in a world where everyone is "KILL IT WITH FIRE!!" about germs...and we're already seeing antibiotic-resistant strains of various bugs as a result. It's only a matter of time before other strains manage to mutate and become stronger.

P. Yorck: So if you are weakened you become vulnerable to what is just general background dirt to the rest of us and there is not much you can really do about it? Surprise.

Pretty much this.

My 2nd grade teacher told us she had to visit her (elderly) friend in the hospital as said friend had been digging in the garden, pricked her finger, and gotten an infection that almost took the whole finger. So you'd better wash your hands if you get cut!

I got to many dirty cuts in my childhood if I washed even half of them out I'd STILL be in the bathroom with peroxide and a cotton cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. Half of them you don't even notice till the day's over. No point washing it then. Bacteria's already inside and breeding.

2013-12-29 02:12:05 PM
You have more bacteria on and in your person than people in the world.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/19/magazine/say-hello-to-the-100-tril li on-bacteria-that-make-up-your-microbiome.html?_r=0

Mostly you're a well balanced ecosystem and would die a horrible, painful death without them.

NIH estimates that 90% of cells in the human body are bacterial, fungal, or otherwise non-human.  Further, we know know that viri RNA has been observed in our genome.

Biology is awesome.

When my wife had her mastectomy & subsequent rebuilding operations people were always surprised that the hospital sent her home so quickly. She's a pharmacist & knows about infections, she explained to people that she was in far less danger of getting a bad infection at home than in the hospital because the bugs at home were ours & she was used to them.

Bleach and alcohol based cleaners are fine, bacteria do not develop resistance to them. That's why they've both been in use for years. They fark with the cell walls of bacteria. Try evolving a resistance to being sliced in half.
