The zoo saved some money on feed, they ought to set something up to route more deer in there

UNAUTHORIZED FINGER: I wish I could say that this is Darwin (Deerwin?) in action, but thinning the herd via automobiles hasn't seemed to smarten-up the deer population any.

I live about 15 minutes away from this zoo and I once saw a deer freaking out in the median. So I pulled my big bright blue car over to the side of the road and came to a complete stop. Sure enough, out of all the directions that stupid farking creature could have gone it ran across the 3 lane road and ran - pretty much full speed - straight in to my driver's side door. Farked up my door real bad, and blew out both the windows on that side of the car. I got out and ran after it as it ran in to the woods, screaming profanities at it.

They are stupid, stupid, STUPID creatures - like Tea Party stupid - so this story makes me smile. The cheetahs had a blast and got to do what is natural for them, and we have one less deer to get hit by someone's car. Sounds like it all worked out to me.

Deer is delicious.

I believe zookeepers refer to this as "enrichment".

I love nature. Especially big puddy tats.

I saw those cheetahs. Know what they were doing? Jogging around the edge of the enclosure, ignoring everything. Just trotting along. They had a path worn all the way around the inside of the fence.

I don't like zoos anymore

I was a zoo docent for a few years. When I went to DC I visited the zoo and made a beeline for the cheetahs. (None in the zoo I worked at.) I chatted up the docent there and, since I was a docent, too, she took me for a behind the scenes tour of the educational facility and we spent a few hours exchanging anecdotes about the animals in the zoo I worked at and the animals in DC.

Every few years, some hapless deer leaps into the cheetah compound, much to the delight of the male cheetahs who are loafing around minding their own business.  The zookeepers commented that they were pleased that these captive raised animals still had a good prey drive. Many species don't and their offspring will never learn. But the problem with them eating these deer is that a lot of times they have worms. Animals that eat grass off the ground get worms. The meat fed to the cheetahs does not have worms because the stock are taken care of and dewormed regularly.

I can't even imagine how much Ivermectin you need to use on a scooting cheetah.

The best part, was the zoo official saying that the cheetahs behavior was natural and to be expected.  Why would they have to say that?  Well, because we have those so-called "sensitive viewers" out there, who thought the animals would have gotten together and sang kumbaya.  You know, the ones who think dogs and cats want to be vegetarians.  The type that have the brains that are as soft as shiat.  Yeah, those are the ones.

iheartscotch: Calmamity: I think I see a way to eliminate the need for "sharp shooters" to control the deer population in the park.

Um, no. The deer population is at critical mass. They are moving into city parks because there are just too many deer for their regular habitat to support them all. Plus, we've encroached on all the good foraging spots. There is a legitimate need for experienced gun, bow and crossbow hunters to thin the deer populations in our parks.

It's not like we're letting Darrel and his other brother, Darrel, hunt all willy-nilly in the park; the guys who do it are mostly cops and game wardens.

I think Calmamity as implying that the deer could be allowed access from the park to the big cat habitat on a... shall we say, somewhat temporary basis.

Mister Peejay:

Fortunately, most big cats don't see humans as good prey.  Not enough meat/fat to bother with for the bigger cats, and too difficult a prey for the smaller big cats.

I'd say the other reason is they've evolved to fear man, like most of the rest of the animal kingdom.

There's a really good reason we don't keep cats the size of Great Danes as pets, namely the fact that cats are way stronger proportionally compared to a dog of the same size.

And all the ends are pointy on a cat. A dog has just one pointy end.

Closer than you might think.  Although it'd be hard to tell a brain-damaged deer from any other dumb-as-dirt deer, Chronic Wasting Disease (a prion disease in the same family as Mad Cow and Creutzfeldt-Jakob) could be a concern.

I've heard similar stories of them running full-bore into the side of still or slow-moving vehicles.  I almost hit one in the middle of the highway that was running in circles between lanes at night and then tripped and fell towards me even though I went to the farthest lane away and slowed.  Cloven, tick infested rats with pea brains.  Death to them all....tasty, tasty death.

Cats will never win because dogs will always have a master with a gun ready to shoot any big cat that comes near his damn dog!
