Wolf_Blitzer: Boojum2k: I don't know, what race were you thinking when you threw the card? For the record, I don't know of any race that has a halal requirement.

Why don't you name a few groups you consider "races" so that we have a basis for common understanding?

"Its not racist because XXX isn't a race!" is usually the first red herring bigots throw out to defend their bigotry.

Um, no, racist doesn't mean "people I don't like" it means "a person who believes in racism, the doctrine that a certain human race is superior to any or all others" coming from racism "a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others."

So one again, you see racism in the article. Which race is it denigrating as inferior?

Wolf_Blitzer: Boojum2k: Wolf_Blitzer: Laobaojun: Speaker2Animals: Isn't satire supposed to be funny?

It's by military folks, for military folks.  If you don't get it, don't read it.

/I don't expect to laugh at accountant jokes, but I don't make snide remarks about their humor, either.

Having known more than a few military folks, they're mostly not as racist as that website portrays them to be.

What race is the article racist against?

What race would you describe Afghanis as?

I don't know how I'd describe this guy.

dukeblue219: Every day I am utterly disappointed in the sheer number of people who have no ability to judge what is satire. When you tell them you always get the same response "Well, Obama is so evil it COULD be real" or "Well, Bush is so dumb it COULD be real."

In most cases, these satire pieces are confirming the reader's preconceived worldview.

Then again, the mark of good satire is how believable it would be, i.e. the Kanye/Mandela comparison

Well this part is real...

"Don't these assholes have any idea we're trying to partake in sacred Afghan rituals here," said village elder Mohammed Omri Gul, while caressing and ogling at a seven-year-old boy pouring his tea.

So that means all of it is real, including the teahadists making internet propaganda videos.

/Teahadist or Talabanist... they both is the same... Religious nutters who doom mankind to nuclear vapor

I'd forgotten the internet axiom of not wrestling with a pig (appropriate for this thread I suppose). If you want to chalk that up as a "win", go right ahead, slick.

Why shouldn't we look at the Taliban with scorn?  Or do you approve of people who rape little boys, treat the livestock better than they treat their daughters, and would murder a woman for learning to read?

Here's the problem with you and the article's author: you're taking vile attributes of a population subset (Talibs) and generalizing it to an entire ethnocultural group (Pashtun Afghani). Your sweeping generalization would be like me working from the fact that many Catholic priests have been accused of molesting children, to saying that all Christians are pedophiles. It's pure bigotry.

If that is a proper analogy, then find me the Christians who support the right of Priest to molest children. The right of Muslims to treat their women badly, kill their daughters for bringing shame to them is written into their rules and you guys act as if it's a culture that should be treated on par with every other culture. Why do you hate women so much?

Actually Wolf, the Taliban picked up the habits from the Pashtun.  The aversion to ham, and other tasty, tasty pig based goodness for the table is Koranic (and at the time of the Prophet was classist and a statement of contempt for people lower down the social order), but bachi baz and treating women as property is straight up, old school Pashtun.

But you go on white-knighting them.

I'm not completely humorless.  I think you're pretty damn funny, for a start.

Pretentious and bloviating, though, sure.  I try to bloviate at least once a week.  It's good for the sinuses.

It's been suggested in several books that rules against eating pork (in some societies) or beef (in others) "evolved" for pragmatic reasons like that.  If not public health, then as a means of preventing people from "killing the goose who lays golden eggs."  The hindu proscription against beef, for example, is supposedly to prevent followers from killing off their dairy cattle all at once.

I wish I could remember the title of the book.  It all seems to tie in with the idea of memes (in the original sense, not the current "lolcats" sense), that religions evolved under selection pressure as they competed with other ideas.

I heard one argument that pigs were too easy to raise, and were raised by the poorest and smelliest (literally, as you would know if you have ever been near a pig pen) segment of society.  The religious restriction gave people an excuse to avoid people they didn't respect anyways.  Another argument was that part of the Jewish law was purely to distinguish themselves from their Gentile neighbors, a membership indicator kind of thing.  A third argument was that it was a very indirect demand for better treatment ("God says you can't feed us the cheap stuff!") but this would also work as a rallying cry: "They are oppressing us! They are trying to feed us unclean food!"  The trichinosis thing also makes sense.
The Muslim spin on it stems from the use of an Arabic work that means both physically unclean, and spiritually unclean.  The linguistic consequence is that there is no conceptual distinction between 'dirty' and 'an abomination in the eyes of the Lord'.  So we end up with people who believe that wiping your rear end with a bare hand and molesting little boys is not unclean, but a bacon cheeseburger and a woman in a bikini is nasty.  Religion; making no damn sense at all for over three thousand years.
