(NHL)   Annoyed his teammates were calling him old on his 32nd birthday, Blackhawks winger Patrick Sharp chased down a speedy Matt Duchene on a breakaway to make one of the best defensive plays of the year. Oh, and he scored a hat trick, too   (video.nhl.com) divider line 22

His goal against Luongo is my favorite:

But yeah, he was in the zone last night and he's been red hot these last few weeks.  You paying attention, Team Canada?

I don't think there's any reason he doesn't make the team.

After watching last night I can't believe the Avalanche is in third place; they looked like amateurs in that game.

The Blackhawks have the ability to make any opponent look like beer-leaguers and make it look easy.

Speaking of amateurs, I missed the game because I played hockey (outside even) for the first time in my life. I love the game even more now.

/Happy Birthday, Sharpie

I hope he does make the team - he's earned it this year.  And yeah, Avs didn't look very prepared last night.  Hawks had a morning skate, Avs didn't.  And after 3 days off, that probably had an impact.

Meanwhile at the U-20's, Canada lost to the Czech Republic.

And Seidenberg is out for remainder of the season with a torn ACL/MCL.

That's because teams couldn't travel to games until Friday morning. They get an extra day off (good idea) and they couldn't get the OK to travel on the night of the 26th?

Good. I always like a loss before the elimination rounds to light a fire under their ass.

Also, WTF was up with the ref tackle? 2 minutes in the box seems slightly less than what I would've expected...

Should be booted out of the tourney but he is a star on the Czech team sooo

Yeah, I was a little WTF when that happened.

It was hard to determine if the Czech player knocked him down or the Canadian player slew-footed him.

Either way, that was one hell of a 3rd period.

I've always like Sharp and his game. A couple of years ago there were rumors that the Kings were trying to trade for him and I was hoping it would come true. I wasn't shocked that nothing happened because I figured it would take just about everything under the sun to pry him out of Chicago.

Grapes is as Canadian as I remember him. I would think you guys would Americanize him so you could dismiss him.

Yo, Don...learn to count to 6 before you start flapping your plaid gullet about coaching boo-boos.

Jesus - Sharpie opens the scoring tonight with a highlight reel goal against the Blues.  He really wants a spot on that Olympic roster.

That was sick.

after the first cup, i was surprised when sharp wasn't picked as a veteran piece to shift when tallon so badly mismanaged the cap. I would have expected ladd, as a number 2 centre on a team not deep down the middle, and many years younger, to be a more natural part of the core, whilst sharp would be superfluous on a team deep at wing. i always assumed locker room/attitude had a lot to do with it.

but the fact is, when i've disagreed with bowman, has more often than not proven the better judge.

Toews should have gotten a penalty shot in OT.

They are mostly coasting on a win one, lose one record these days after dominating early on this season- including a 5-1 drubbing of this very same Hawks team.

Great play by Sharp who could pretty much do no wrong this game, but I will say Duchene made it easier on him when he stopped skating and let Sharp close the gap. Still a great play.
