OK, time to revise history once again. The oldspeak was that the Nazis didn't pursue nuclear weapons because Einstein was jewish. What's the newspeak?.

I'm pretty sure I saw this plot in a movie somewhere. It didn't end well.

Germany was pursuing nuclear weapons, They were just way behind in part because they drove out so many brilliant scientists, in part because a decade of ideological schooling reduced the number of first class researchers and technical experts, and also they were going down the road of research - heavy water and such.

And you won't because it's not true.

Germany suffered a brain-drain after many of its scientists/doctors/intellectuals (many Jewish) fled when they saw the writing on the wall. Albert Einstein was just one of them.

I never heard that. IIRC, I did hear that they pursued nukes, but instead of focusing on U-235, they focused on U-233 or something, and that isotope would not give them the results they wanted. They could make power but not a bomb.

They built piles with graphite, uranium, etc, but they never got any big bada boom.

The Nazis were experimenting with heavy water as part of their nuclear program. The Norwegian resistance sabotaged the heavy water plant.

Um, I've never heard that claim made. I always understood that the Nazis did have a weapons program, but that it didn't get very far because, weirdly enough, a lot of the top notch physicists had decided to depart the country for some reason or another.

Which would be a bizarre claim to make considering Einstein himself told FDR that he suspected the Germans were working on nuclear weapons in his famous 1939 letter to the president

A good read on the subject for anyone interested: The First War of Physics, by JIm Baggot.  It covers the race from both sides of the war; it has a fairly detailed accounting of Germany's efforts.

It tried too hard to be funny, if they had played it straight and not gone with the wannabe Palin parody I think that it would've made for a much better story. They already went out on a limb with the whole space Nazis on the moon thing so adding in the wholly unbelievable earth politics (which, lets face it, would only appeal to a very small minority of the public in general because of the way that they portrayed it) turned a lot of people off from the movie. It had me up until that point. The movie was supposed to be about space Nazi's, not the imagined alternate reality politics of a really bad Tina Fey wannabe.

Unfortunately it's not very good troll bait when you consider (a) the timelines involved in going from zero to the first working atomic bomb, and the well-documented start of the Manhattan Engineering District, (b) the variety of different kinds of engineering expertise required to make an atomic bomb, (c) that the Germans were pursuing a completely different research path involving heavy water (possibly, as impaler noted above, encouraged to do so by Heisenberg in the full knowledge it was unlikely to work), and (d) that the Germans were far behind the Allies and not remotely close to a working bomb at the end of the war.

Heck, we know for a fact that the Americans flipped German rocket scientists after the fall of Germany, but they weren't able to contribute anything useful to the war against Japan even though Germany had actual functioning rockets.

The real world is not like Tony Stark creating an arc reactor in a cave in Afghanistan; you don't just drop a couple of Nazi scientists into the middle of the Manhattan Project and have them go "Oh, I see your problem!".

That's why I mentioned that they were already out on a limb in that regard. A good movie, with a believable plot, no matter how far fetched it may be, has to be based somehow in reality. Space Nazis, while really out there in the realm of believability, has a bit of truth behind it. They had rockets, they had the first jet airplane and so on. They actually did go into developing some futuristic weaponry (for their time). At least it's believable to some extent for a movie to take that to the next level. Meanwhile Palin was soundly rejected before she ever even got started. The 2nd half of the movie was essentially Idiocracy with space Nazis added in trying to be topical, and for me at least it didn't work. And I liked Idiocracy for what it was.

Rejected before she got started?  Millions of Republicans were and still are salivating over her, no matter how many dumb trollish things she says and does.

The entire concept of the movie is over the top to begin with.  McCain kicking the bucket and leaving Palin in command was way more plausible than Nazis on the moon.

But, you know...its just opinion.  I thought the movie was hilarious.

I see 3 possibilities:

1. History has decided that tomorrow, they will have dead air from midnight until 8.

2. The next show on History is about space aliens who are capable of time travel, and intend to show up tomorrow at 8, evidently not realizing Hitler has been dead for decades.

3. Subby is a farking buffoon, and the mod that greenlit this potato of a headline should be poled.
