Looks like certain professions have always been quite popular with the masses.

Some of these are not awful projections, just maybe another 50-100 years off.

"Longevity will be so improved that 150 years will be no unusual age to reach." .... Some still say we'll be there in another 50-75 years.

"Three hours will constitute a long day's work by the end of the next century." ..... This was kind of right, in that I think the projection was, with automation and technical advancements, we'd be able to get done in 3 hours what it took 8 hours 100 years ago to do.... which is more than right, but, they didn't figure in that we'd just be asked to do 4x as much as people 100 years ago at our jobs.

Some didn't come to pass though, although you couldn't blame people for thinking we'd try to overtake Canada or South America.

"Politically, there will be far less money expended in electing officials, I fancy. And many of our leading politicians out of a job will be living on the island." [That is, incarcerated]." .... well, this one did come from a "humorist", maybe he was trying to be funny.

"By the year 1993, the mechanical work of publishing newspapers may be done entirely by electricity."

Well, that prediction did come true, just much sooner than expected.

Yeah, have to remember, electricity was still in its infancy at that point, so, even making predictions about how much that would "change" society was a big leap, let alone being able to predict 90% of everything we have now.

6. Van Buren Denslow, Professor
"Trousers will be relegated to bookkeepers, barbers, pastry bakers, and cripples."

Wait, what?

7. Kate Field, Journalist
"The waist line will be just below the bosom."

This has been true for a long time... at old folks homes.

5. Charles B. Lewis, Humorist
"We shall not only restore the dress of our great-grandfathers before we stop, but run the costumes of Adam and Eve a pretty close shave."

So, we are going to go about in Victorian stuffiness whilst wearing only fig leaves?  Somebody cleverer than me translate that, please?

"Transcontinental mail will be forwarded by means of pneumatic tubes."

Turned out to be a series of tubes.

19. TERENCE V. POWDERLY, UNION LEADER
"Labor organizations will have disappeared, for there will be no longer a necessity for their existence."

Labor organizations have largely disappeared, largely out of a well-financed, long-running and misguided campaign since the era of Senator McCarthy to literally remove left and moderate politics from viability in this country.  McCarthy would be proud of America today.

the fact that laborers are interested in job security, job safety, earnings, and benefits (which the law more or less ensures now) not politics.

All of which you're much more likely to get in a union than out.

Oh shut up.  Your Boobies shows that your interest in unions is first and foremost your leftist agenda, now you're trying to backpedal and say it was benefits and stuff all along.

You want to know what really makes leftie politics unviable in this country?  The fact you lefties are delusional about what your supporters actually want.  You think workers want to join forces to fight the final battle against all things rightie and create a leftist paradise with Comrade Marx.  Ah, no.  They just want better benefits.  They don't give a lick about your utopian ideals.

8/10. Some decent trolling, but not enough spelling errors.

Actually the size of Denver in 1993 was probably the size of NYC in 1893

Altitude5280: Actually the size of Denver in 1993 was probably the size of NYC in 1893

I was wondering if that's what he meant.

He sounds like a Denver booster though, and I'd guess he meant that it'd bigger today than New York is today.

It brings to mind when you drive through a tiny town with a name like New Berlin or New London or some such.

They were aiming admirably high, but clearly things didnt quite work out like the city fathers had hoped.

I might have been exaggerating a little, but it's basically true. The left wing has too many ivory tower elitists with grand schemes, who think most people care about those schemes. But people mostly care about effects.

I was still doing some "mechanical work" publishing newspapers manually until I left the business in 2000. Noxious chemicals, X-acto knives, all that good stuff.

You might want to educate yourself.  The reason the left isn't viable in this country is as I stated.  Congratulations on being part of the low-information voting crowd that the conservatives depend on to get elected.

You're the one that needs to be educated, chief.

Nobody is saying there aren't right wing interests affecting things, but the right isn't powerful enough to make leftist politics unviable as you say without the left wing shooting itself in the foot.

Here's the truth.  Less than six years ago, the relatively left-wing Democrats had supermajority control of the legislature and the presidency.  (In those halcyon days before right wing existed, amirite?)  But they blew it.  Why?  Because they tried to push this grand scheme, all-ecompassing, pulled-out-of-thin air health care plan.  Ordinarly people (i.e., the majority of people, who aren't extremist whackjobs like you) reacted negatively, not because they necessarily disagreed with the plan, but because it was such a sweeping change.  In fact there was an article on Fark about how people weren't actually objecting to the content of the plan.

As a result, many Democrats wouldn't support it, and so they only thing they could do was pass the watered-down craptastic phenomenon we have now.  And, the perception that Democrats were not only ivory tower elistists pushing through this grand plan with only minor regard to what people wanted, but also supremely ineffective morons, was a major factor in the Republican victory the next election.

If Obama had pushed through a plan that made more incremental changes based on what people wanted, rather than pushing a ivory tower grand scheme, it would have passed without trouble, and since the Democrats would be seen as competent, Republicans would not have made the inroads they did.  And when the incremental changes didn't destroy America, Obama and friends might have finished the job a few years later.

Face it, the left is lost, and has been since Carter.  They get power; they give it right back because they're farking stupid.  Meanwhile the Republicans kept power more or less through eight years of the world's bigget idiot as president.  But if it makes you feel any better, Republicans are starting to be stupid with power now with this debt limit fiasco.

P.S. I am not right wing and don't vote for righties when there's an actual race.
