Pichu0102: They seem to think it's a rare phenomenon. I personally do not have any prior knowledge of what this is, but if it really is just dust from somewhere else, why now? Do they have any idea if something like construction or the like may be a factor, or is this just something strange the weather does occasionally?

Repealing the anti  land erosion laws massively removing water from the aquifers, and poor farming practices probably has more to do with this. Probably need another Roosevelt to fix the mess,

I live in Houston and my car got "dusted" in the rain last week. I've got Rain-x on my car so it looked like my car had measles.

Usually the Mexican dust is October, the Sahara dust is in the summer and the really red shiat is from some volcano in Oregon. The rare wet dust is what other folks call rain.

Subby should change the title to 'People on the internet...'.

I live in Houston and I haven't heard of anyone who thinks it's anything other than dust that got blown in by the cold front.

Pichu0102: Cold_Sassy: Matthew Keene: I remember driving west towards Wichita one fine afternoon, and was pelted with mud from above. I knew what was happening straight off. People are idiots.

Yeah, I heard in the SAME story on CBS evening news that there had been a dust storm down in Mexico that same day.  Duh.

Oh, a dust storm. Not a phenomenon I'm very familiar with, but that makes sense now. I'm still a little curious though. Can dust storms be agitated or made worse by people if they leave a bunch of open land around with nothing planted, or does it have to be mostly natural dust?

Good question, and actually... this is true. Agriculture can lead to unbelievably huge dust storms. This actually happened in the U.S. during the 1930's. Any time you get large amounts of broken ground combined with dry and windy conditions you can get a massive persistent dust storm.

I've currently got red dust on my car, so I'm getting a kick...well actually, I'm not getting a kick out of it. It's pretty annoying actually.

Ha! What an obscure reference. Good job. What ever happened to that chic? She was hawt.

I didn't read the article, but I think all that dust on my man-truck was blown in from Mexico (I live in Houston, God Bless Texas). The savage drought that's ravaged Texas for the last few years has shifted west and a Pacific jet stream seems to have set in.

Good. I'll take the dust if it means normal rain.

West Texas/Permian Basin reporting in: We actually haven't had the usual winter dust storms lately, and between the ice storm, mild snow, heavy frost and just plain rain... well thank God for all the moisture! Of course come spring not only will the wildflowers be amazing, but so will my allergies :/

Hey, the last time it rained, there was barely any mud coming off the roof and into my rain barrel!

My mother's family are all from West Texas. I can remember my Grandmother going around putting towels down on all the windowsills and doors when the storms were coming, and dirt would still get in. It will be pretty there in the spring, for sure.
