I love reading stories like this. They're such a welcome change from the usual stuff on fark.

Nice lady. Paying it back. It's a real community spirited thing she's doing.

Boxing day? Since when is Vermont in the UK?

As somebody who is expected and paid to work outside all day, every day, no matter the conditions, this is damn awesome. Pretty regularly I am given little baggies of homemade goodies, and that means more to me than the giver will ever know. You're just exhausted, miserable, probably hurt, and want to be anywhere else, doing anything else. And then there's a genuine "Thank you." And the world is good. I sure hope the community helps her with the food bill

Good for her. Nice to hear of generous people who are doing something nice for others.

Haven't yet RTFA but based on the comments so far am I to believe there was no mention of anyone in the town having a problem with it and putting a stop to it prematurely?  Not an individual, a group, nor the city itself?
Glad it worked out the way it did.

Yea you would expect the government to get involved and shut her down because she did not have the proper food serving license or whatever that protects the people from improperly prepared food.

Just got our power back after 5 days. As annoying as it was, I can't imagine what the line crews are going through. I live in michigan, and there are crews up from as far as kentucky. Got to chat with one of the crew that showed up to cut trees away from our lines today. They had been working 16 hour days since sunday, including christmas day. After that, bailing out our sump by hand for a few hours didn't seem all that bad.

It's basically South Quebec in parts of the state.

That's very nice but shouldn't the company be providing the meals if the guys are out there for 18 hrs a day? Dunno, maybe there was company food and this was the better option but it doesn't sound like it.

i offered the guy driving the salter truck in the plaza parking lot a beer. i'm glad he turned it down.

Yeah. I lost power and was just like "f*ck it. I'm going up north."

I've been hiding at Torch Lake since the ice storm. "Home" was out of power for 5 days, also.

I work horrendous hours. And an unpaid internship.

If someone wanted to be nice and give out a warm dinner on Xmas, that would be sweet!

Don't be a whiney c*nt.

Aw, well thank you! I would like to cook for the dudes dangling precariously over the frozen tundra/lake area that the power lines trudge through so my area isn't a neighborhoodsicle on Xmas.

I like perogies for Christmas. I hope you can get your perogie on.

Happy Christmas holiday time. I'd still kiss you under the mistletoe ;)

I think you made the right choice. Our neighbor from down the road is an EMT. He said practically every call was someone just sitting in their freezing houses with no way to warm themselves up. I realize some of them probably had no choice, but there has got to be a better option than just sitting in a 30 degree house until you need an ambulance.

Why the f*ck did autocorrect think "neighborhoodsicle" was cool and not "whiny"? That's the real story here.

It also recognizes "toungepunch".

Some of it is on you. You live there maybe a wood stove would be a wise investment otherwise you could call primerpony and he'll install it for a tongue punch and a smile?

cambie: Boxing day? Since when is Vermont in the UK?

The county they live in borders a province in Canada, one of the countries that observes Boxing Day. It could be that there's enough Canadian influence in the area that they observe it too, or perhaps some of the line crew were from Canada & the family was showing respect to them by observing the day. At any rate, does it really matter?

No. Everything would be on fire. Everything.

Otherwise, I have the weirdest ladyboner...

LOL. I live in Genesee County, which I heard got hit the worst. We didn't lose power, but the pharmacy down the street did so my wife can't get her meds. I love ice storms, but I hate all the damage they can cause.

I'm going to get drunk an go to sleep.

The drunken Post-It note that says "call code & insurance about wood stove" will perplex me when I read it at 7 am.
