abhorrent1: Why do you own a  pet if you can't afford to care for it? If they can't even afford to feed it, when was the last time they went to the vet? My guess is never.

As someone who spends lots of time dealing with people like this every day, it's more common than you think.

shiat happens. Elderly people retire, get stuck on small pensions, watched their savings disapper when the economy tanks. Social Security pays a fraction of what it costs to survive. They suffer from loss of a spouse, children move away, they get very lonely. It's a well known fact that having a pet is healthy for us. It lowers blood pressure, calms us down. Nursing homes who have pets have residents who are happier, healthier and need less medication. Sometimes a dog or cat is all a person has left in life. Being poor sucks, being lonely sucks, being poor and lonely is worse than anything.

A lot of people have pets before bad things happen in their lives. Instead of dumping their pets in shelters to be killed, they do what they have to do to keep them. If they have to share their food, they do it.

My rescue and spay/neuter organization has a pet food pantry where we help people who need help feeding their pets. It's more cost effective for me to help out with food than it is for me to take in their pets. It costs me over $100 for each adult cat I take in to get ready for adoption. I can bring them a bag of cat food for less than $10 to hold them over until their check comes in. I've seen an elderly man melt into a puddle of tears when he turned in 7 kittens and 10 adult cats because he couldn't afford to care for them anymore. His oldest cat has cancer and he couldn't afford to care for her and spay the females he had, so a couple cats turned into a bunch more.  He loved his cats dearly, but he fell into hard times. We took what cats we could, left him with a managable amount, helped spay the remaining cats. I brought him some food when he needed some. Win win situation for all. We get food donated to us when we do food drives and deliver it to those who need it.

The county senior services social workers all know me and call when they have to deal with situations where the elderly can't afford their pets. A lot of times it's the Meals on Wheels volunteers that find people in need of help with pet food, then they call me. The situation I mentioned earlier was with an elderly couple who was low income and rented a trailer. They were feeding strays as well as cats dumped off by idiots. The cats reproduced, and before they knew it there were over 20 cats they couldn't afford. It usually snowballs like that.

I don't judge people who call me for help, I'm not here to judge them, I'm here to help them. If it takes a bag of food to keep a cat at home with it's elderly owner, then I bring them a bag of food. if everyone brought a bag of food to someone who needs help feeding their pets, there would be so many less animals killed in the shelter every year.

I hope you all had a nice Christmas if that's what you celebrate and Santa brought you and your kitties lots of goodness. We don't do much here, Cretinbob had to work, all my kids are in different states,  I like to enjoy a peaceful day without all the crazy family hoopla.

We've been busy for the past week rounding up cats in a condemned trailer. The elderly couple who lived there had to be physically removed by the sheriff dept, code enforcement condemned it and they can't go back. The big problem is they left behind over 20 cats in the singlewide trailer. Our local SPCA doesn't remove animals empty buildings,  so they left them there to freeze and starve to death. The sheriff dept, code enforcement and senior services called me to see if I could help, we gathered up some helpers and spent the week removing cats from the trailer. Many of them were friendly and we could just pick them up, some were unsocial and we had to trap them. We removed 19 live cats and kittens, found 3 dead cats, and have to go back for one or two very elusive cats who aren't letting themselves be caught.

The cats were in pretty bad shape, emaciated, dehydrated, snotty noses and goopy eyes. One had to be euthanized, it was beyond hope. They rest have responded to medication, good food and clean water. We do have one who tested positive for feline leukemia, another tested negative. Monday we have to test the rest of them.

This place was beyond disgusting. The code enforcer told me this trailer had the worst roach infestation he's ever seen. The elderly man who lived there was bedridden and refused to leave. One of the dead cats we found was in the bed. I'm hoping it wasn't there before the guy was removed.

As most people were shopping and planning their fancy holiday dinners, I was in a cockroach palace doing some cat wrangling with friends! I think it was probably more fun. It was like one of the scenes from Animal Cops, walking around with crates and traps. The cats are all safe in foster homes, doing well for the most part.

So what did all of you do exciting for the holidays?

I'll spare you the worst photos, but here are what some of the cats looked like when we got them.

I still think it's a "dick" move.....and I no longer have respect for her.  My neutrality is now gone.

I don't disagree with anything you've said.  Just happy right now to have a roof over my head, a bed to sleep in, some fur kids in the house, and the fact that I'm still alive and haven't quit yet, nor will I.  Going to be a while until I get everything back that I had before, but I'll get there eventually.

Ya know, my ex got everything, too. I'm not going to spew the drama all over here, but I did pretty much what you're doing and focused on the one thing I did have. I was incredibly happy - not to mention lucky - to even be alive. While what I went through was painful in many different ways and is right up there as my "number one suckiest thing to ever happen to me", I came through it a much stronger person in some respects. The stuff was just "stuff" and it could be replaced. I can't be replaced. It took me a very long time to heal (and in some ways I never will heal completely), but the pain subsided over time and I think now it was actually a good thing I didn't have any of that stuff. It was like getting a completely fresh start. It's a rough way to do it, but I had no choice in the matter, and in some ways I'm glad for it. I'm not afraid to just grab a backpack and GO if I have to do so to keep myself safe because now I know all this "stuff" I've so happily surrounded myself with doesn't matter so much. I appreciate the kind words.  Yeah, it hurts.  Mainly at night when I'm awake and the house is silent, that's usually when it sets in and hurts the worst.  But I'm not going down the depression road again, and if I can't fight that off, I will quickly go back on meds, because that is just living hell and I know the signs and won't go through it again without help. Tried that before and it was an utter nightmare, and I'm secure enough to admit it if I need to go that route.  As for everything else, I agree that it's just items.  I can't be replaced, so that means I won't let myself get down in a hole by all this and try to find at least one thing a day to make me smile.  Everyone here on Caturday definitely gave me that smile today, and I am eternally grateful.

And just for my own addition to the Itteh Bitteh Kitteh Committeh, here's an old one of our little balls of fur now grown to full fledged crazy kittehs.  From top to bottom, here's Sashimi Fettucini, General Tso's Tortellini, Moo Shu Tiramisu, S-H-I-I-T-A-K-E (stupid filter) Parmesan, and Pu Pu Pasta (now Sophia)

I do a calendar of my furkids every year.  This year I used ancestry.com which smug mug is associated with...  Calendar turned out great.  Used to use Kodak but they went under.    This site is better.   Now I want to work on the next year.

The calendar will give me something to smile at every day at work.

Thank you for asking lilyspad! I have since had to cut off the "dead" parts to get to the actual quick and let it grow back. It did, however, stop bleeding and I am able to actually use the finger.

As far as how it happened? I was lifting the stretcher with a "fluffy" patient on it and it caught on the stretcher and tore off. Added to the injury was the insult their nasty, icky, ungrateful feet were in my face.

I have personally flung poo. 25+ years ago we had a neighbor who would let her dog out to poop at night and he pooped next to my car door on my driveway several times. I once scooped it up with a litter scooper & flung it at their house. It hit their front window with a splat! An other time I stepped in it as I got out of my car so I tip-toed (to keep it on my shoe) to their front door and started wiping it on their mat as I rang their door bell. She opened the door & watched me finish wiping it on her mat.

Yea.  Yea you did.  May Ceiling Cat smile upon you.  Best of luck rounding up the last of the cats(!) let us know how that goes...

When one of my friends went to reset the traps this morning, she say the last kitten hiding under the trailer. We named him TIny TIm. He has a deformed front leg, not sure if it's from an injury or congenital. He's afraid of people and has been very elusive all week. Hopefully she can get him lured into the trap today. I do think he is the last cat there that needs to be removed from the trailer.

This is Tiny Tim...

Tiny Tim looks an aweful lot like the one in the other pic, but with better eyes, (look like littermates) I'd guess there were a few others.  Best of luck scooping up the little guy...

We did manage to get Tiny Tim today, who turned out to be Tiny Tina!!!
I think she might be related, around the same size. Tiny Tina's eyes look great, but she has some congestion in her lungs which needs to be treated. We thought she was going to be the most feral because she's avoided us all week, but she turned out to be all snuggly! She didn't need to be trapped. The woman who was helping to remove the cats, sat on the ground and slowly coaxed her out. Tina climbed into her lap. It was that simple.

I'm just so happy we got her out of there alive. Every day she remained in the trailer, the lower the odds would be of success.
Now as far as we can tell, there are no more live cats in the trailer. This makes a total of 20 cats removed. Pretty good haul, considering the conditions the cats lived in. I'm surprised I only found three dead, but I wasn't about to wander around in that trailer looking for bodies. It just wasn't safe to be inside, besides, I couldn't help them anyway.

Now the tough part, having them all tested for feline leukemia on Monday. We tested two when we first got them, one was negative and one was positive. I won't know what to do with them until we test them all. Felv + cats can be adopted out to homes without other cats, or with other felv+ cats.

Here's Tiny Tina and Michele, one of my wonderful and very patient cat catching helpers.

Without smoking the whole thing to go back, there is no go back, btw...  The suck of 8.1 is almost enough to open a singularity.

The 'nastiness ' is part of most Fark threads, a lot of folks enjoy that.. and come for that... in spite of that, some of the threads are very educational.. once you sort through the bull, a lot of people are right on the money with their assessment of the topic under discussion.. keeps things interesting....

You mean, while Fark as a whole might have a sour, snarky shell, Caturday is its soft, warm, creamy center?  Not sure I'm sold on the "non-dysfunctional" part.  Unless you're implying that everyone here is dysfunctional so therefore no one is.

Happens every year on the 4th of July, and New Years at midnight around here. Unfortunately they aren't as respectful as Older Guys neighborhood..... :(

It got real bad here for a while.. then the cops set up the neighborhood.. stationed a bunch of plain cars all around the area.. had paddywagons stashed around.. two behind my house.. they nailed about 25 people and threw the book at them... two weeks later we passed out pamphlets.. there was a sheet on the back to sign..  haven't had a problem since.....new neighbors get the word quickly...  a neighboring county had a child killed by a falling bullet last NYE... very sad...

Long time dog guy, but we recently adopted a cat (Bentley). Sometimes he's kind of an asshole, but he brings excitement to the house. I think the dogs hate him, but they'll get over it. He loves his couch fort and lives to knock shiat onto the floor.

Welcome to Caturday!!  Is that a pic of Bentley?

Yep. Not quite certain as to what kind of cat he is. He looks like a lynx point birman, but he doesn't have blue eyes. Oh well, he's still pretty cool.

Same here.... besides, we have the 'gun count' going that night..  as in how many different types of guns get discharged from 11:30 pm to 12:30 am.... finding a bullet on the ground in the morning is a 10 pt. bonus..  we have a consensus within this neighborhood where any celebratory gunfire is directed into an inanimate object to prevent the up/down scenario.. others are shooting wad cutters (blanks).. a guy down the street has a .44 automag..   loudest damn thing I have ever heard..  there is a mac 10 or some kind of room broom two blocks over.... zzziiiiipppppp  and done.. and for all that, we have no shootings, no breakins or robberies, etc...  unknown vehicles cruising through the area usually find themselves being checked out by the beat cops.. they are very supportive about keeping the neighborhood safe....

Alright. That is just one of the sweetest, cutest, most adorable cat pics EVER. I love the look on kitteh's face. It just says so much with that look.

I need to feed the feral cats that live on the other side of the greenbelt. We neighborhood cat people take turns and I've perked up quite a bit so I get my turn back. Later, I'll try to get a picture of the Yeti that's been showing up in my back yard for lunch for about a week now and a pic of Moo Kitty, the semi-feral that actually lives in my back yard.

Also, I should probably eat something as well. I'm thinking a small Denver Omelette, a banana or apple or pineapple chunks and a toasted half an English muffin would be nice, but we'll see what I've got in the fridge. I furgotted already. :-/

Not sure why he screeched. First time other that a cat fight with our other cat years ago. The kid thinks he had a bad dream. Panther has been "clingy" the last two years (he is 14 now). Quite often he gets me up in the middle of the night with head bumps or a swatting paw until "his" pillow is pulled out for him to curl up on.

Starting to smell a lot like dinner...

yum!

you know there's a chef in the house when you can eat leftovers for a week and have five completely different menus...

*high five* damn straight. I have no idea why people get so weird about it and act like having leftovers is just the worst thing that can happen. I see them like FREE FOOD! because I see possibilities. I have some ham right now and I am already getting angsty about running out in two days. There's just so much you can do with ham. I have so few opportunities to get a really big chunk of dead beast with full household approval, it's like I'm in chef type heaven the days AFTER a holiday. To me, that creating new stuffs out of old stuffs - and most of the work is already done! - is not just a point of pride in making it new and tasty, but it's easy fun. How could anyone NOT like leftovers? The people who don't look at their leftovers with barely contained glee at their good fortune must be the wrong kinda crazy.

Snuffybud: Real Women Drink Akvavit: Snuffybud: Happy Caturday!!!

I was lying on the bed with Jack cat (the polydactyl) yesterday scratching/annoying him when I discovered the boy has even more toes than I thought he did! He's got a little tiny bump of bone on both his front legs up above his other extra toes!

My finger is right behind the newly discovered toe, you can see the other 2 toes (yes, there are 2 toes in that mess) to the right of my finger.

You can just barely see it here. Theses toes are only about 1/8" around and 1/8" long.

I didn't feel it, I saw something funny in how the light was on his leg. Funny what you discover after having a cat for 1-1/2 years!!!

/Is there an itty bitty toe committee?

Bonus toes! Top Secret toes? Super Mutant cat? I had Gogh for how many years before I found out she was actually a HE? lol! Yeah, it's not like they're gonna tell us their secrets, are they?

I've been calling him the Mutant Cat ever since we got him due to the other toes, mebbe his is the Super Mutant Cat!!!

/I'll know I'm in trouble when I start hearing "Bwa-ha-ha" instead of "mrrr-mrr-mrrr" from the boy!

Or if he starts wearing a needlessly ornate helm that serves no obvious protective purpose. Helms on a cat are iffy, but a needlessly ornate helm is always bad news.

Thankfully, the hotel we have decided on seems to have moved into this century and has wifi in "most rooms". I don't even know what that means or why they wouldn't have it in all rooms, but whatevs. Just as long as I have my wifi, I'm good. I BETTER have my wifi! If not, there's a McD's in the parking lot and they usually have wifi, so I'll at least be able to check in.

I'm also having some friends over this weekend, so I spent some time prepping the extra bedroom.  The kittens helped.

Don't know what's going on with Buddy but I'm not going to complain -- his appetite is back with a vengeance!  The boy just wants to eat, eat, eat!  I think he is making up for lost time.

We are so happy he's happy.  Having him here with us, especially since we thought he might not make it to Christmas, is the best gift ever!  We love our fuzzy little guy so much.

We had a wonderful belt-buckle-busting get-together at Mom & Dad's last night.  Brought home lots of leftover turkey.  Buddy goes cuckoo for cocoa puffs for turkey.  This is what happened when Mr. Gunk tried to eat a turkey sandwich for lunch today.

I'm sure Buddy received at least half of the contents of that sandwich!
