Hello, Alien.  I remember you from The Tour (when I was a foolish lurker - my loss).  You had a different Fark handle back then, no?

Yeah my account was compromised awhile back so I had to build a new Fark account.
Which is seriously outdated :/

I did not celebrate Christmas this year.
To be honest - I just could not feel it.
Couldn't feel it, see it, hear it...
I've never had this happen before.

It was pretty lonely.

My family stopped all contact months ago, as did most people.
But I take partial blame in being so horrific in keeping in contact - it's hard to do when you
aren't allowed electronic devices in the hospital. Ok in certain areas of the hospital.

Such a...strange thing to not experience.

abhorrent1: Why do you own a  pet if you can't afford to care for it? If they can't even afford to feed it, when was the last time they went to the vet? My guess is never.

As someone who spends lots of time dealing with people like this every day, it's more common than you think.

shiat happens. Elderly people retire, get stuck on small pensions, watched their savings disapper when the economy tanks. Social Security pays a fraction of what it costs to survive. They suffer from loss of a spouse, children move away, they get very lonely. It's a well known fact that having a pet is healthy for us. It lowers blood pressure, calms us down. Nursing homes who have pets have residents who are happier, healthier and need less medication. Sometimes a dog or cat is all a person has left in life. Being poor sucks, being lonely sucks, being poor and lonely is worse than anything.

A lot of people have pets before bad things happen in their lives. Instead of dumping their pets in shelters to be killed, they do what they have to do to keep them. If they have to share their food, they do it.

My rescue and spay/neuter organization has a pet food pantry where we help people who need help feeding their pets. It's more cost effective for me to help out with food than it is for me to take in their pets. It costs me over $100 for each adult cat I take in to get ready for adoption. I can bring them a bag of cat food for less than $10 to hold them over until their check comes in. I've seen an elderly man melt into a puddle of tears when he turned in 7 kittens and 10 adult cats because he couldn't afford to care for them anymore. His oldest cat has cancer and he couldn't afford to care for her and spay the females he had, so a couple cats turned into a bunch more.  He loved his cats dearly, but he fell into hard times. We took what cats we could, left him with a managable amount, helped spay the remaining cats. I brought him some food when he needed some. Win win situation for all. We get food donated to us when we do food drives and deliver it to those who need it.

The county senior services social workers all know me and call when they have to deal with situations where the elderly can't afford their pets. A lot of times it's the Meals on Wheels volunteers that find people in need of help with pet food, then they call me. The situation I mentioned earlier was with an elderly couple who was low income and rented a trailer. They were feeding strays as well as cats dumped off by idiots. The cats reproduced, and before they knew it there were over 20 cats they couldn't afford. It usually snowballs like that.

I don't judge people who call me for help, I'm not here to judge them, I'm here to help them. If it takes a bag of food to keep a cat at home with it's elderly owner, then I bring them a bag of food. if everyone brought a bag of food to someone who needs help feeding their pets, there would be so many less animals killed in the shelter every year.

lilyspad: OCDelightful: lilyspad: She liked the ribbon on her new toy more than the toy itself......go figure!

Your kitty is so pretty :) I've given up buying toys for my cat. I just bring home boxes and bubble wrap!

Lily is kindof funny that way....doesn't care for boxes or sacks. Odd. One of her favorite toys that she got this year is a pipe cleaner! She is going APESHIAT over that thing!! (thanks sherpa!!!) She smashes it, intentionally I think, just so I will re-spring it and throw it for her!! Too funny... :D

yeah Ben Hurr and Gremlin went absolutely bonkers for springed up pipe cleaners, and this ONE straw Benners got to first because he was the first to come home a week before Gremlin. Man...they beat the ever loving plastic out of that straw - you think I'd have been able to replace it?
Nope.
Same with those little sparkly poufy balls someone had sent me. Yeesh! the fighting over those little sparkly balls, from what I hear they are still Gremlin's all time favorite toy.

little shiate

That's kitties for you! I don't know if I ever told you why I love your Fark name. I have personally flung poo. 25+ years ago we had a neighbor who would let her dog out to poop at night and he pooped next to my car door on my driveway several times. I once scooped it up with a litter scooper & flung it at their house. It hit their front window with a splat! An other time I stepped in it as I got out of my car so I tip-toed (to keep it on my shoe) to their front door and started wiping it on their mat as I rang their door bell. She opened the door & watched me finish wiping it on her mat.

man oh man!
I applaud thee! such deliciously evil and awesome sauce to do that.
Gives me ideas...

Diocletian's Last Cabbage: Wow, read all the way to the fot of page 6, (Fri afternoon).  Got back yesterday afternoon from Home For The Hellidays.  Wasn't too bad this year.  Both my sisters and there significant others were up and enjoyed themselves.  My bro only stayed a few hours and was very well behaved.  I think the new medication agrees with him.  My Dad stocked enough Redd Apple Ale and Sam Adamas holiday specials that I didn't wven mind Mom and Dad's  occasional Fox News rants.  I'm conversative, and even I can't take more than 3 days of that pair.  Got a bunch of nice pics from my top-of-the-lie $5.98 Kmart Kamera.  Here, let me show you the them...

This is Otto, my sister's dog.  He is a German Mittel Spitz, aka American Eskimo Dog.  Otto loves scritches and gets underfoot like a cat, but is also spastic and will run in every room in the house but yours when you call him into your room.

[i1134.photobucket.com image 640x480]

He must share my Dad's politics.  Here he is staring at Fox with rabid attention.

Hey Caturdayers!
I need some advice. I currently have two older cats, one is 13 and the other 14. Both are neutered males in great health and very attached to each other. My boyfriend wants to introduce another cat, probably a spayed female, to our mix. Any suggestions on how to do it? Any arguments for not doing it? She will be a shelter-kitty.
Thanks!

Krusty's Wench: AlienDandelion: Yes.

Your wishes came true, though it be only a small one.

I am here.

Thank you all for your never ending love, kicks to my ass, and support.
I wish it could be enough to help me...

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,

And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.

Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man;

Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor's cup;

And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint in the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are,
It might be near when it seems afar;

So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

*reads*
*stares*
*tears up*
*reads it again*
Thank you.
As bad as I have been for communicating and joining in with Caturday over the past year - I am truly grateful and
reminded that I have the best family in the entire world - right here.
Thank you.

hawaiijenno: Just out of curiosity, as all animals are welcome, how many of you have non-traditional pets?  The vets around here consider anything that's not a cat or dog "exotic". How many exotics take part here?  I have one cockatiel currently & we're awaiting another one to be fully weaned before we bring her home. Just wondering how many other "exotics" are out there in Caturday-land.

I used to rescue hedgehogs way back in the day.
I've always dreamed of one day having a Chinchilla.
Any and all animals are drawn to me. The only creature to not full out approach me is a whale. I swear.

yobbery: sno man: yobbery: I loaded Windows 8.1 on my spare machine today. It seems the general consensus is that it sucks, however I wanted to see for myself.
[www.smugmug.com image 300x216]
Rather than write a wall of rant I'll just summarize by saying their potential for suckage knows no bounds.
W.T.F. is microsoft thinking? I'm still shaking my head in disbelief when I think of it.

Without smoking the whole thing to go back, there is no go back, btw...  The suck of 8.1 is almost enough to open a singularity.

I actually liked ME better, and I was never able to get ME to run beyond booting directly into a blue screen. It's the thought that maybe ME had *some* redeeming quality (if it ran) that makes it my preference.

I'm serious. I heard 8 was bad, but I had no idea! IMHO Microsoft went full retard on Win8...and we all know you never go full retard.
[www.smugmug.com image 450x373]

Although I have read that 8 has some (very small) performance improvements over 7 in certain areas I just can't stomach the interface enough to find out. I'll stick with 7 for now.

If you can still get windows 7, go directly to the store now before its no longer available for sale.
GET WINDOWS 7 WHILE YOU STILL CAN! Microsoft is going to stop selling it soon.

Good morning Caturday people.  Hope all of you are well this weekend (tablet browsing, haven't read whole thread yet).  Made it safely to MI and spent all day yesterday and today and likely the next 3 days walking around getting various hockey signatures for the big Winter Classic.  Should be fun at least before the games.

On pet news, Mum has confirmed that she does have pictures of our previous masters, but she's not sure if they are digital yet.  We'll be trying to dig them out for next week.  In the mean time, I will try to get pictures of the current furry resident here, their friend's Sheltie, Luka, if I can convince him not to eat snow while outside (or even if I can't)

Back later caturday folks.

domari: Now for the sad news.... we lost our Jeff today. He's been sick for a while, seemed to be getting better, then took a turn for the worse. When I couldn't find him today, I didn't think it would end well.
Jeff was born here, Cretinbob got attached to him right away. When someone called and asked if we had kittens for adoption, Cretinbob said to tell them no. Jeff was here to stay. I just wish he could have stayed longer, he was such a good boy. He got along with all the other cats, the dogs, and everyone he met.
He was very photogenic, with his beautiful green eyes, he was often the cat in front of the camera. I think some of you have captioned his silliness over the years.
We're going to miss him so much, certainly won't be another one like him.

RIP sweet Jeffy...
