IIRC it actually was considered a letter for a bit of time.

I can't be to certain, tho.

I'd be happy enough if he could point us to the passage in the bible that talks about how joyous the lives of black people were in the US during Jim Crow.  You know, since this is all about him being persecuted for his Christian convictions.  Then again, I guess I wouldn't have to look too far in the bible to find parts giving a thumbs-up to slavery and generally shiatting on large groups of people.

2013-12-26 09:22:26 AM
Considering A&E probably told him to say those things, and will probably give him back pay when they reinstate him after the furor has died down, I wouldn't say hypocrites but more businessmen.

I am completely sick of this. I never watched this stupid show, and for people to get the vapors because an ignorant redneck makes bigoted and retarded remarks is absurd. What did they expect, the wisdom of Confucius? Both A&E and their critics are making money off this rampant stupidity, and I am tired of the self-righteous whining on both sides.

i'm sure sarah palin can find it for you - since she gallantly rose up to defend him despite not having read the article in question.

That's a pretty reasonable explanation.  It's not like A&E didn't know their audience, and didn't realize they had more to gain than to lose by this shiat.

A certain element out there will respond to this kind of campaign and crack open their wallets without thought. Similar campaigns have erupted the multiple times Obama has seized our weapons and generated ammo shortages, a smash hit profit vehicle. The "War on Christmas" caused many to reflexively begin spending to fight the evil doers and prove their worth to the Kingdom. In real wars, any decline in public support can be reversed quickly by pointing out that the enemy "does not have our values" and we all know what that is code for.

Etc.

I'd say this manufactured BS storm would get me to quit watching A&E entirely, but the entire schedule of Dog's Storage Dynasty Rodeo Wars already did that for me.

RIP 90s History Channel, A&E, Discovery, SciFi....

2013-12-26 09:42:51 AM
Syfy used to do this to wrap up contractual commitments when they had to air a show a certain amount of times.

Either that or they really thought an Adventures of K-9 marathon would bring in the ratings.

2013-12-26 09:43:59 AM
My FOX News-watching parents actually watched the show for the first time after all the hoopla.  I wonder how many people it are watching it out of spite?   Kind of like the way people flocked to Chik-Fil-A.

You have two very vocal groups of people who are antagonistic to each other and A&E is playing them both off of each other to make buckets of money. I have to admire that on some level.

A&E:  a cable channel that went from "Jane Eyre" to "Gene Simmons Family Jewels".  A&E is like Fredo Corleone: it's been dead to me for a very long time.

Here is what I find humorous about this entire non-issue that has people outraged.  I grew up in majority African American area so I have lots of black facebook friends.  Far more have come out in support of this guy than against him.  I understand my view of the world does not represent the entire AA community but it really has me thinking that no one gives two craps about this manufactured drama.

Yes, because no one in the history of forever has ever used the word letter in everyday speech to refer to character.

In the 1800s the ampersand was the 27th letter of the alphabet. Subby may be old school.

Black people tend to be more homophobic than the general population.  That's why many gay black men seem to lead ordinary lives, getting married and raising a family and then getting it on the "down low".

Based on his own comments, he believes that black dissatisfaction in America today originates from a lack of religious faith. He witnessed no abuse of black people and saw no animosity towards whites by black people because they were hard working Christians back in the day. Then they started receiving welfare and turned their backs on God, and that's when they grew cold-hearted and started thinking they were being discriminated against. It's his religious belief that human suffering comes from a lack of religious conviction among his fellow man, and trying to suggest racism is an actual component of human suffering is a violation of that belief.

But yeah: he was suspended over his comments just like the Family Guy writers killed off Brian. Don't worry; I'm sure A&E were planning to cancel the show and fire him until you started your petition and this all had nothing to do with the new season.

He must go to a slow moving church, but I expect big changes when this guy hears what Jesus thought about rich people. Which charity will receive the bulk of the wealth he gives up, you think? You know, since he's such a devout Christian?

It is a perfectly cromulent symbol.

MJMaloney187: ampersand

From Wikipedia:

Traditionally, in English-speaking schools when reciting the alphabet, any letter that could also be used as a word in itself ("A", "I", and, at one point, "O") was preceded by the Latin expression per se ("by itself"). It was also common practice to add the "&" sign at the end of the alphabet as if it were the 27th letter, pronounced and. As a result, the recitation of the alphabet would end in "X, Y, Z, and per se and". This last phrase was routinely slurred to "ampersand" and the term had entered common English usage by 1837. However, in contrast to the 26 letters, the ampersand does not represent a speech sound, although other characters that were dropped from the English alphabet, such as the Old English thorn, did.

Hey, look at that...learned something today...

/The more you know...

The local Fred Meyer's (a regional chain, sort of like a Target) had all their Duck Dynasty crap piled on clearance tables and marked down to 50% to 75% off before this incident.

Now, it's back to being neatly stocked and full price.

Done in one.  With A&E never actually taking a stance on it, I was a little curious.  Now we know.
