Blizzard?  What blizzard is this you speak of?  It's summer down in Antartica and, what with global warming the ice they're allegedly trapped in is a figment of their imaginations.

Another sterling recommendation for Antarctic eco-tourism? I have to wonder how Antarctic cruises ever sound like a good idea.

FTA:

Hayward-Maher, whose agency is coordinating the rescue, said she believed the 52 explorers and tourists and 22 crew members were not in immediate danger.

Just so we're all clear, if you are on a cruise ship, you are not exploring.

As long as there is a hot woman to bang and a rare old car to add to his collection.

I'm on my way to a Carnival cruise right now, so I am really getting a kick out of some of these replies.

Looks more like a tramp steamer and less like a cruise ship

I just got done with a cruise on the Carnival Valor in the Caribbean.  I specifically got a room on the 10th deck that had no rooms above it.  The room had a balcony in case I needed to pee off it.  I was hoping we would break down so I could get a free cruise.  No such luck.  The cruise actually ended up rescuing a yacht:  http://www.usatoday.com/story/cruiselog/2013/12/23/carnival-valor-res c ue/4175387/

My experience with Carnival was fantastic.  The crew was super nice and so was the boat.  I'd recommend Carnival to anyone.

Do enjoy your freedom, unless, of course, they executed you after you wrote that.

So I found the expedition blog.

http://www.spiritofmawson.com/blog/

Y'know, if I ever get bitten by the travel bug, this sort of thing actually looks ilke fun. Tourists get to see some neat stuff, and the money they spend on the trip partially subsidizes the operation of the vessel for the small contingent of researchers on board. It'd be nice if basic research could be done without tourists potentially getting in the way, but if the alternative is that the ship stays in dock due to lack of funds, using ecotourism to defray the cost to the researchers is a reasonable solution.

Ice breakers racing full throttle, eh? I didn't think they worked that way. Don't they throttle up onto the ice, then slow down allowing the weight of the ship break the ice?

Having been on an Antarctic cruise myself, I can confidently say that I'd happily risk dying a remote, icy death to go back again. Firstly, the solitude was an introvert's paradise. I never realized how much "background noise" (airplanes, insects, distant cars, etc) my brain filtered out of my conscious experience until it was all gone. Plus, getting to see wild penguins swimming in schools and sitting on blue icebergs while I was drinking cocktails made with 200,000 year old ice was beyond amazing. That being said, it's absolutely worth it to pay the additional money to go on a premium cruise line, because they can afford to hire a better ice pilot.

This ship cam website has recently become one of my obsessions.  Odd that they seem to have most of the other cruise lines, but no webcams on Carnival ships.

Your experience makes me want to apply for a winter IT job at McMurdo Station. I like cold and darkness.
