Do you mean like how it is easier for kids to get pot than it is to get booze and cigs?

I detect snark, but a legitimate reason pot is a 'gateway' is because of the prohibition of it. If the guy you buy pot from also sells some meth, or acid, or 'E', or all of the above, he has a vested interest in getting you to 'try' those when you visit to buy weed. Another 'problem' that marijuana 'causes' that's really due to prohibition.

Because he was high.

If you are ever in Santa Fe, Jaquez has the good stuff.

"Sixteen and smoking pot, it often leads to other drugs or continued use throughout these important years of their lives because the brain is still developing," said Lupe Sanchez with the Santa Fe County DWI program. whose training consisted of watching "Reefer Madness" for fifteen straight hours, and reading a dog-eared copy of "Go Ask Alice" she found in a bathroom stall back in 1974.

Watching the various law enforcement entities gasp their last breaths on the evils of cannabis even as the country FINALLY decides that a little plant is just not the major problem they (pharma, textiles, fossil fuels, tobacco, the list seems endless) wanted us to believe it was is farming hysterical. I am especially enjoying the few stories I last read about people losing everything because they were using cannabis to help with their pain and other problems so they would not lose everything.

/Dontcha just love how that works?
//anyone who still believes all the hype about cannabis has obviously not done the one thing I did decades ago. Follow the money. Or, more specifically, who would lose money and monopoly from the legalization of this little plant. Then the 'war on drugs' becomes crystal clear...

You better follow it farther back.

Marijuana was placed on Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, after being outlawed since at least 1937. This was when Congress--not "law enforcement"--decided it had "no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States and a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision, and it is further undisputed that the drug has at least some potential for abuse sufficient to warrant control under the CSA" (Denial of Petition to Reschedule Marijuana, 2001)

A lot of people have fallen for the hype and hysteria--it's become self-reinforcing. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who is solely in it for a pure profit motive any more; I suspect a great many people genuinely believe it's really bad stuff.

Gyrfalcon: Marijuana was placed on Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, after being outlawed since at least 1937.

I'm tellin' ya, plain and simple, read tinyurl.com/1mn --> it's a 20-minute reed, and its a transcription of a speech given before Prop. 215 passed in California in 1995, and the guy giving the speech was a law professor from University of Virginia. He and another law professor researched the history of marihuana prohibition and they wrote "The Marihuana Conviction," originally published in 1974. After finding that page (linked above) I looked for the book about 10 years ago and it was out of print; I looked again a year or two later, and it had been reprinted and I got a copy for $14.

//oh, and the f*cking mormons were first to outlaw it; infer what you may

hell, when I was 16 we would park the car someplace off of the beaten path, like a nice dark park and then smoke. We never drove around after snorting the marijuana- it would kind of ruin the fun.

That is about as weird as the one where a young woman's  baby drowned because she  smoked pot.  I can't find it, but I just remember it being so farking over the top it made you dizzy.  Every year on NYE, the local PBS station would air that particular episode.  Could never figure out why, but it was a real buzz kill. I know. That is what i was reefering to. (heh). The lobbyists for the various companies who learned what this plant could do saw the writing on the hemp paper and said, "Oh HELL NO!". They knew what the legal cannabis would do to their monopolies and their income, so they banded together and got it made illegal. Yes, the mormons did it first. Never underestimate a mormon's desire to create control over everything. Then, of course, there was Anslinger.... the little weasel...

Given the amount of money, time, and effort put into the drug "war", it's difficult to imagine the government working much harder at keeping children (or anyone else, for that matter) from obtaining marijuana.

looks like 9 and 1/4ish to me, but yeah. This is an instance where either the cops actually understated the amount (how often does that happen?) or dude's ounces were short.

2013-12-26 01:27:34 PM
Times have changed.  I don't think there was a day when I was 16 that I wasn't high (1979).  And no one ever got busted for possession, even 16 year olds.  If the cops found weed in your car they made you dump it on the ground and kick it around.  And bust up your pipe.  I had to smash a sweet glass steamroller one night.  All my friends had stories about getting pulled over with weed and hearing the "Next time I see you with this" speech.

2013-12-26 01:58:48 PM
I think its kind of interesting that once Marijuana is made completely legal (its only a matter of time really) I'll be one of those people who has seen both sides. I'll be able to tell my grandchildren "When I was your age, Marijuana was completely illegal. People went to jail, went to PRISON, for simply possessing marijuana paraphernalia. There were raids on people and everything. It wasn't until I was (age) that it was made legal." Kind of like how when Prohibition ended there were older people saying "I remember when alcohol wasn't legal."

/Kinda neat seeing the world change around me
