What's got me all sad is Capaldi will probably have 5min at the end of the Christmas show (if that) and we will all have to wait until august to see more. August!

Ok, UKy people, was it any good?

I'm still waiting for the episode to fall off the back of the Internet Truck.

I have a feeling that we're not going to see "happy manic fun loving Doctor" for a while which is fine by me.

Tax Boy: Ok, UKy people, was it any good?

Just watched it in Israel (it was simulcast with the UK,  think). I missed a lot because I've only seen a few episodes here and there since the end of Season 3 -- I try to not watch it until I can catch up properly. But I thought it was OK -- very fast-paced, and the story was complicated and so much was explained quickly.

Seemed to have some plot holes because a lot was crammed into an hour. Fairly big guest-appearance from a former cast member. Classic foes throw in (guess who), with a few returning new ones for good measure. Some opened-ended questions remaining with the Time Lords and Gallifrey following the 50th anniversary episode and the episode tonight. The issue with the remaining number of regenerations seems to have been answered. Plot fills in a few plot holes over the last season or so (from what I hear).

But of course, the regeneration scene was poignant with some humor thrown in. That's all I'll say for now. :)

I laughed out loud when he explained away all that stupid online debate with two lines of dialogue about "Captain Grumpy Face" and 10 having "vanity issues."

Seems like most people guessed correctly as to how they would basically treat the idea of Doctor Who having "rules" with exactly as much respect as it deserved.

Anybody but the redhead, anybody but the redhead...

...I'm not going to get that lucky, am I?

/Maybe Capaldi's Doctor will call her a twat and toss her into a black hole.

Certainly better than "End of Time".

He was okay with it. I was however, disappointed that he didn't break out the tuxedo and top hat for the occasion.

Well, look at it this way... would you really want to saddle your successor with a tophat and tails?

I mean, bad enough The Sixth Doctor had to wander around in a cricket outfit, and The Seventh Doctor had to have a blonde wig and technicolor dreamcoat immediately after regeneration... but a tophat and tails? You're setting the bar too high!

Watched it earlier and was blubbering for a couple of hours.  Had planned on watching it again tonight, but don't know if my red eyes can take it.

I will miss Matt Smith.  He's along the lines of Sylvester McCoy for me: a very good to excellent take on the Doctor, hindered only by incredibly frequent crappy writing.  He did his best and rescued some bad episodes almost on his own.  I think I'll always think of Matt Smith in the "could have been" category.

OK, it's turned into my little girls' favoritest TV show EVAR, so ... hopefully the writers are kind.

(Thought it was hilarious when Tom Baker's cameo in the 50th anniversary episode triggered Daughter #2's "stranger danger" alarm)

Now I need to watch the Downton Abbey Christmas special but can't yet because I'm at the parents and they still haven't seen the latest series.

Reporting from London:

Yeah, it was pretty good.  I'm not a huge fan of the "special episodes" from the new series because in general they try to cram way too much down people's throats for such a short amount of time, but I liked this one.  No gnome-Doctor powered by stories, no quickly resolved issues, it was just an episode with a lot going on.  I'm going to grace you with a bit of spoilers-quietness, but I think that the whole thing was quite true to Matt's doctor and the character as portrayed in the whole show.

Yep, and The Doctor's Wife.  And maybe the two-part Silurian episode.  After that, I'm hard pressed to think of episodes that I would say were "classic" during Smith's run.

2013-12-25 08:39:56 PM
Watched the special, via livestream, earlier. It was pretty good, definitely better than the End of Time (a little ribbing on RTD here and there throughout the episode). I'm pretty sure most of you will enjoy it. Have fun and Merry Christmas.

2013-12-25 08:40:37 PM
Yea gods, I've found Matt Smith to be truly repellant as the Doctor.  Though, to be fair, he was a little more fun once the ponds finally wandered off.  My generation's Colin Baker.
