I agree with #1, but the best episode of Sunny in Philadelphia was Mac Day.

If you disagree, you are allowed one scream into the ceremonial pillow

Wow that's some terrible taste

2013-12-25 07:20:29 AM
I would've added The League and dropped New Girl. Mostly because I haven't seen it nor want to see it. And swapped Modern Family for Parks and Rec because that show just doesn't do it for me.

I've heard of three and seen one. Zooey does it for me.

I saw a recent episode after seeing one of the earlier ones.  Let's just say the recent one was better.

I heard of six of these.  Have you, by chance, been living under a rock?  Note this does not mean I agree with the list.

2013-12-25 08:23:21 AM
I think I've heard of 7, though one of them was just seeing the title on IMDB yesterday.  Haven't seen any of them, I work nights and sleep every evening.

2013-12-25 08:26:52 AM
They got # 1 right for sure. No other comedy on tv can touch Parks and Rec, it is gold and Amy Poehler is a national treasure. I like New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine from that list as well. Never got into Eastbound and Down, and fx/fxx thing made me miss most of the last a Sunny Season, guess I'll catch up on Netflix. Most everything else I'm not particularly interested in, might be good, I'll never know.

2013-12-25 08:35:26 AM
I'd take Trophy Wife over New Girl any day. Malin Ackerman is hot and funny and who knew Marcia Gay Hardin could play funny? Goldbergs is interesting because the stories come from his actual family but I wouldn't say it is a better comedy than Modern Family.

If you want to see something soul-killing, check out a sitcom without laugh track.

Big Bang Theory minus laugh

2013-12-25 08:39:29 AM
List included New Girl. List is bullshiat.

2013-12-25 08:41:37 AM
I didn't like Brooklyn Nine-Nine until the Stacy Keach episode, that was pretty good. But I still have a hard time buying Adam Samberg as a cop.

2013-12-25 08:57:00 AM
wow, I haven't even heard of a single one of those.

2013-12-25 09:07:23 AM
Maybe it got better, but I watched the first two episodes of Brooklyn 99. It was 'I wonder what lie their parents tell when asked what the kids are doing these days' bad.

2013-12-25 09:21:14 AM
I agree with subby about Modern Family.  I don't watch much TV, but my wife is always watching this show so I watched a season on Hulu and it's pretty damn funny, but I typically love mockumentary style shows or movies anyway.

2013-12-25 09:30:01 AM
Agree with subby on Modern Family but would pull the Goldbergs. Watched a couple of episodes and couldn't get into it. Loved everything the mom was in but the main character irks me.

2013-12-25 09:34:50 AM
My oldest son and I loved Family Tree.

I would put the Middle on there. But there are times I feel like that is a documentary on my life...except it is set in Indiana.

There are two shows my family sits together and watches...The Middle and Modern Family.

2013-12-25 09:38:03 AM
Modern Family just really isn't that good. It has its moments, but I always thought it was a fairly above-average show that had way too many one-dimensional characters. I also thought the kids were mostly annoying or at least very hit or miss.

I like Parks and Rec, but am I the only one who gets the feeling that it's kind of run out of places to go? They obviously tried to expand the characters a bit, but it's "the more things change, the more they stay the same" for me. I've also never felt like it was  that good of a show either; 30 Rock and early Community were easily much better shows. P&R just has no competition on Thursday anymore.

Your_Huckleberry: I didn't like Brooklyn Nine-Nine until the Stacy Keach episode, that was pretty good. But I still have a hard time buying Adam Samberg as a cop.

His twin brother Andy is much more convincing.

2013-12-25 09:45:52 AM
Hadn't heard of 8, 9 or 10; vaguely somehow aware of Veep.  But Roy searching for a family tree does, in fact, intrigue me.

All that being said, I have a hard time thinking a comedy with Malin Ackerman can possibly be good.

New Girl over Louie? For reals?

2013-12-25 09:53:58 AM
Since they moved Sunny to FX...X? my DVR hasn't been recording it and I didn't even realize they had released a new season.

2013-12-25 09:54:23 AM
Even though there were some funny moments in the "Arrested Development" season on Netflix, it was just not that good. I realize the episodes were intertwining and that it was tough for the cast to be together all the time due to scheduling conflicts but a lot of stuff in the episodes were repetitive just to fill in time. And I was surprised at how many gags just fell flat. I thought I heard there will be a nother season, so maybe that will work out better. The whole Michael living in his son's dorm gag was weak.

2013-12-25 09:55:16 AM
There's 3 reasons to watch Modern Family.

there was no louie this year.

Terrible list but I do love Parks and Rec

Subby fail. Trophy Wife is fantastic. I'd say better than most of the shows on that list even.

2013-12-25 10:14:50 AM
I didn't watch a single episode of New Girl until a few months ago, and was really surprised by how great it was.  If you have not seen it, it's certainly worth giving a shot.  On the flip of that, I so desperately wanted to love Brooklyn 99, but...I dunno, I'll watch it if it comes on, but I won't wait for it (especially with Dads as its lead in).

On another note, is there an island where they ship TV reporters who claim HBO shows are anything less than brilliant?

2013-12-25 10:38:58 AM
Don't watch a single one of those.  This could just as easily be re-named the worst sitcoms on TV.

2013-12-25 10:47:18 AM
I'd imagine at least 90% of modern sitcoms follow the same formula. Dumb guy + cute wife + hijinx.

2013-12-25 10:53:01 AM
The League is the only sitcom currently on television that makes me laugh out loud on a regular basis.  Belongs on the list.

It's Always Sunny did the same thing 5 years ago, but I think it has run its course.

Veep has moments of brilliance.  I was disappointed by the reboot of Arrested Development.

It's crimmus. Why must you be so cruel today?

And wtf happened to you, Paste?  You used to be cool.

2013-12-25 11:05:35 AM
Modern Family is the most overrated show on TV. If Sofia Vergara (also overrated) left, the show it would lose half it's audience overnight.

2013-12-25 11:08:35 AM
This season of the League was kind of a letdown (granted, I didn't watch it as much as previously b/c of the stupid FXX split, and pitting it against American Horror Story; great job, Fox marketing guys!) Same for Sunny, although Mac Day was amazing. Parks and Rec would be glorious if NBC would actually air it instead of crappy America's Got Singing. At least they got it right and not a single Chuck Lorre abortion made it on the list; that should count for something, even if it is a pretty low bar.

baufan2005: I'd imagine at least 90% of modern sitcoms follow the same formula. Dumb guy + cute wife + hijinx.

now that I think about, I think this generally describes why I've never been that impressed with Modern Family even if I generally like it: it's basically the formula that you've described, but put into the faux-documentary style, but put on a slightly grander scale (essentially the formula dispersed to 3 couples).

I feel like I'm putting the show down more than I really mean to,  but whenever it gets massive accolades, I always think "Well, it's basically a less low brow version of 'According to Jim' or 'King of Queens.'"

2013-12-25 11:51:45 AM
They may have been cancelled by Happy Endings and Don't Trust the biatch in Apt 23 were hilarious.

The Goldbergs?
Really?

Well, 'Family Tree' didn't have a laughtrack.

But as was mentioned ITFA, it's by Christopher Guest, so it's all dry, uncomfortable humour.

It just seems awkward because timing is still set for laughter to be there.

You could ruin just about any comedian's show doing the same thing.

Trophy Wife is hilarious while Modern Family blows. How is that hard to understand?

2013-12-25 12:28:49 PM
I will say, I'm almost impressed with the fact that they went with "Trophy Wife" as a title after everyone witnessed how a bad name (Cougar Town) could ruin a show's image and give people misconceptions about the show and not tune in because of them.

RIP Terriers

2013-12-25 12:31:55 PM
The list fails without Raising Hope and Louie.

2013-12-25 12:37:58 PM
I can't believe that some of you are mocking New Girl and Brooklyn Nine Nine what is wrong with you people?

FeedTheCollapse: I like Parks and Rec, but am I the only one who gets the feeling that it's kind of run out of places to go? I'm right there with you. Both on the 'never that good to begin with' and it having nowhere to go. I think they should wrap it up next season. I am just getting bored with the show at this point

2013-12-25 01:00:48 PM
The only ep of The League that made me laugh this season was Smart Taco, where for some reason Taco couldn't get his weed and his brain resumed it's normal function.

Haven't watched It's Always Sunny in Philly for a couple seasons now.

I don't understand how you can be down on IASIP when The League had its most repetitive and boring season to date. Now I love it and it's one of my favorite show but we're not talking about their peak here

baufan2005: I'd imagine at least 90% of modern sitcoms follow the same formula. Dumb guy + cute wife + hijinx.

Great job missing out on fantastic shows because of a stupid preconceived notion that's not rooted in any reality whatsoever

2013-12-25 01:05:44 PM
So, just how much money did Paste Magazine get for promoting that crapfest of a list ? And who do I need to talk to in TV-land to get paid for creating my own list of 'Best TV Shows'?

2013-12-25 01:22:23 PM

Tatsuma: I think they should wrap it up next season.

I almost feel guilty for thinking this as the show still has some greats moments (the sandal-wearing, Morrissey-listening Ron Swanson counterpart was great!), but it is rather directionless and has generally fallen into meta-ness as a substitute for plot.

Lose half it is audience?

There were some great episodes of It's Always Sunny this season, but, yeah, it does feel like it's starting to fall back on in-jokes and callbacks now.  I mean, I did like the Lethal Weapon 6 episode all right, but it did feel like going back over familiar ground.
