Speaking as a locksmith, what an incredibly stupid thing to do.  Lets do some math shall we?
A new door with frame will run about $3000/$3500 ok?  This one is used so lets call it $1500 that can be sold on Craigslist, a "Survivalist" or "Preppers" website.  Subtract the $350ish dollars to have a PROFESSIONAL open it.  Instead of making something like $1150 dollars selling it, its current value is exactly zero other than scrap value.  Since scrap steel is going for something like $60 dollars a ton, and this vault door weighs,,,400, 500 pounds with frame?  Its worth maybe $15 in scrap value- but negative money after paying the gas and labor.  Dumb, this is really dumb.

I love that it's not even the same guy. The OP deleted his account and moved out of the house. The guy who actually opened it as a FOAF who moved in to replace him. He didn't know the safe in the basement was a thing until he randomly saw it on the front page.

Ok, I'm not in on the joke.  What safe is this and why couldn't they open it?

My grandfather owned an old bank building that he ran his business out of.  When he bought it in the 1980s, both of the building's walk-in vaults were locked.  The building had been built in the 1920s and had sat empty from 1967 on, so there was no chance of anyone have the combination.

He did the obvious thing: went in through the concrete wall of the vault, made a hole big enough for a man to get through and sent the locksmith inside to open them.  The cutting took some time, but the locksmith opened both vaults (same style) on the same day.  He also opened an old floor safe.

So, there was a giant spider living inside this locked safe.

Did it get in before it was shut? If so what has it been living on.

Did it get in after it had been shut? If so not much of a safe with that kind of breach.

Also, g'damn that was a big spider.

The locksmith I use sells all kinds of used safes. I have no idea where he gets them but he buys them in large lots that don't have combos. When they have down time or are training guys they go through them and open them up. Just funny to see a pallet of safes with a 'safes for sale, if you need more than a few give us a couple of days to crack them' sign.

I just learned the safe was finally farking opened about twenty minutes ago, but was pretty taken back that it made it to Fark. I'm guessing the whole internet needed to know what was in there. I know my grandma will be calling in a couple hours wishing me a Merry Christmas and wondering if I've heard about the safe being opened.

Also just wanted to say your profession fascinates me. More than a few times I've had my guy out on nice expensive commercial locks. He will ask if I have a key and I say nope just drill it and replace it. He gives me a 'oh really?' Look and takes out his picks and gets it open in Thirty seconds. It is rather scary and impressive at the same time.

As I understand most locks use the same basic core with extra window dressing. Obviously not THE same core. But similar enough ones.

Exactly my thought.  Avoid the relatives, the IRS and friends trying to get their hands on it, if there was anything in it.   What a great way to avoid any scrutiny if you did find some money or valuables.
