(Talking Points Memo)   Republican apologizes for making a remark about the "Klan". Wait, he wasn't supporting the Klan, he was calling Republicans members of the Klan? Really? Holy shiat, this is news   (talkingpointsmemo.com) divider line 23

It's technically accurate.  The best kind of accurate.

The intersection of the following groups in a Venn diagram would form a perfect circle of uniform color.

-Republican Party
-Tea Party
-John Birch Society
-Ku Klux Klan
-Fox News

~~On Facebook Gomez criticized GOP activist Rob Eno and Worcester, Massachusetts Republican activist Chris Pinto "an embarrassment to our civil society."

I agree with your assessment, Mr. Gomez, so I have to ask why you are still a Republican?

Yeah, TWO Republicans. Who happened to be his political rivals. In an election. Neither party has an exclusive on wrapping themselves in the "RACIST!" flag when it suits their interests. Which is why charges of racism are now treated like the boy who cried wolf". It will occasionally be true, but it's been used falsely so often that it'll be dismissed when it's real.

I like Republican infighting, so I encourage this type of back-and-forth, but isn't it possible that neither the offender nor the offended knew that it was spelled with a c? Is the Republican a racist because the Republicans are only aware of one clan, the KKK?

Many countries have "militant wings" of politically legitimate parties. Ireleand's IRA is the militant wing of Sinn Féin, the political party.  There's a separation of control so the political party can't be technically 'blamed' for the things the militant wing does, but somewhere there's a back-room meeting where they all talk shop.

I think there's a little bit more separation between the Klan and the Republican party, but Sara Palin can still probably see it from her living room (since they probably hold the meetings in her living room).

Surprised this wasn't the Boobies.  Because you know this is the smoking gun that proves conclusively that democrats, and ONLY democrats, are vile racist scum who deserve nothing more than death itself.

That's a pretty stupid comment, it has almost no basis in reality when it comes to the history of the KKK and the GOP.  I say that as someone who despises the GOP.

The KKK was started by southern Democrats. When the Dems wised up and cleaned house, the KKK was left adrift, so they went to the one place they knew they would be welcomed with open arms: the GOP.

By the time that happened the KKK was and remains a small and irrelevant group, very far from an armed group for a major political party. Get real.

That's cute. Like the Devil, the greatest trick the Klan pulled in the 20th and 21st century was convincing folks that they're a small and irrelevant group, rather than the seed and inspiration for dozens of white supremacist groups all over the country, many of which were started by current and former Klan members. We here in Washington are loaded with white supremacists, from neo-Nazi morons to Odinist morons, and many of these morons are either inspired by or allied with the Klan. Our state had a lovely history with the Klan, which had a huge political impact during the first half of the 20th century. Washington's rife with bigoted assholes, and most of them live east of the mountains - but we still get our share on the west side, too. Once the KKK switched over to a cell organization in the latter half of the 20th century, their influence became harder to track, but it's still nevertheless present and prevalent in our politics.

" it has almost no basis in reality when it comes to the history of the KKK and the GOP."

Research "Dixiecrats", Nixon's Southern Strategy and the 64 Civil Rights act and it all becomes clear.
The racists switched political parties, surprised as much as this has been discussed on Fark that people still don't get it.

You confuse racist white nationalism with the KKK. Racist white nationalism comes in all forms and currently the group called the KKK is small and irrelevant. Way mor skinheads and such than KKKunts. I wouldn't argue that the right doesn't support race based nationalism, they do, it's part of social conservative ideology.

/you talk down by saying "that's cute" but you diverged pretty far from my point and brought in a totally different concept into the argument

Written on Facebook, so yeah, unless the guy's spelling is epically bad, there's no confusing Klan for clan.
