Short anecdote: Zagat's used to be in the Twin Cities, MN metro area. Based on user reviews, Applebee's was pulling a 24. A twenty-four.

/In other words, reviews don't mean poop.

Charleston has some of the best restaurants I've eaten at anywhere.

First time in my life I've ever paid for food that tasted like it was worth the price.

This.  We honeymooned in Charleston.  We've never spent so much on eating out.  It was also worth (twice) every penny.

/Mmmm....  Key lime pie.....

Charleston is not South Carolina. It just lives there.

This. My ship pulled into Charleston once. I lost no IQ points while sightseeing.

Are you insane? Charleston has good restaurants, but they don't come close to any other major city. They use decent ingredients and cook the food well, but other than that, it's all boring, generic American cuisine.

Most of the people who visit Charleston come from backwoods nowhere and have never had the pleasure of going to a real world class restaurant, so they rant and rave about how wonderful the food is. It's not. It's good, but that's it. Charleston is a foodie city the same way Cupcake is considereda good wine by people who previously only drank Barefoot.

That said, I might make an exception for Husk, which occasionally roses above good.

Never have done Husk, but I will vouch for Hall's.  If good, red meat is your thing, not many better places out there.

I was hoping that the restaurant in question would be the Peninsula Grill in Charleston.

I highly recommend it.
