Because it's trite but it is also derivative.

Reason #1 - you have to suck to get played on the radio today. This includes (c)rap, any music where the "singer" always wears a hat, and of course, the "singers" who sing like they get paid by the note, e.g. the thousands of mariah carey clones.

The thematic shallowness isn't that surprising; that montage covered about 15 songs and you could do that with just about any genre but especially pop genres.

What is truly awful, however, is the tonal/production sameness.  They all just sound so similar!  However, I like that because when I'm surfing through stations, that laziness in mastering makes it really easy to pick out (and skip) the country, Christian-contemporary, and modern R&B stations within seconds.

When's the last time you heard a lyin', cheatin', cryin', or drinkin' song in three-quarter time?

In the 80s, Rap was born and it's been easy low-hanging fruit for country ever since. They don't even have to try.

Whenever I visit my mother-in-law in Florida and I'm fumbling around the radio dial in the car, I pass like seven different country stations. All the songs, by the male singers at least, are exactly the same. They're all about how they may live in a small country town, but they like it that way and they really know how to party down here and they don't need no big city and life may be simpler here, but that's the way they like it. I swear, they wear the inferiority complex like a badge of honor.

I'm going to see him next month with some friends. I really know nothing about him, other than he was with the DBTs.

I remember when being country meant something.

Funny you should mention that.

The guy who made the video is the music critic at EW. He made it in response to fans who said that his list of the 10 best country albums of the year was too esoteric and didn't include any of the big hits from this year. His list had that album as his #1.

His most famous song with DBT was Outfit, he since has released three albums as Jason Isbell and the 400 unit and his most recent as just himself. I'm seeing end of January at 930 club, pretty excited

hmm... not a huge country guy but I often like what is labeled alt-country, Holly Williams is opening for Isbell when I see him might have to give her a second listen. I would much rather see her half brother, here his shows are pretty high energy.

His band is in the style of Southern Rock which is more country than today's bands which is just trite pop music sung in a southern drawl.

I'm amazed they can write so many songs about the exact same thing without making any actual duplicates.  I half expect one day two separate country writers, independently without any communication or coordination to eventually write the exact same country song word-for-word, note-for-note.

Great lineup, but you forgot Emmylou and Willie.  For something new, yet not dreck, check out The James Low Western Front.

Because the pop stuff is formulaic crap just like any other pop music.

Its really not that much different that the rap that so many people I know that listen to this pop country crap complain about.

Its about getting drunk/high, cars/trucks, and hooking up at the bar/club with some floozie.  The female ones sing songs complaining that they don't get any respect as a female in said hookup culture...

Truly shocking.

Oh yes- I would dearly love to see some actual journalist get this up and out- but it'll never happen. Not that the fanbase for these songs would care at how they're being marketed to; they're the Fox News crowd. As long as it's good ol' 'Murican products being stuffed into their ears.

First off: Almost every song there was a variation on 'Fishin in the Dark'.

Does every country singer aspire to write the next song that will be used in a truck commercial?  Is that just in the business plan?

I used to listen to REAL country back when you could find it on the radio like pre Darth Brooks. I gave up on country ever being anything but pop with a fiddle and have migrated into Metal for minor key and depressing lyric goodness.
