(TV By the Numbers)   Discovery Channel reports highest ratings in 12 years, credits success to mass quantities of Deadliest Catch, Nik Wallenda, Gold Rush, Amish Mafia, Naked and Afraid, and sharks. Mythbusters is apparently just a myth now   (tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com) divider line 72

All of which I can personally do without.  But, okay, I guess.

I miss dirty jobs. That was actually worth watching.

I gave back my cable box.  It is all garbage.

Deadliest Catch is worth watching. No chance for that other crap.

2013-12-23 12:30:33 PM
I can't watch any of the crap Discovery shows, Discovery america is actually pretty interesting, but most of their lineup sucks too.
Lets not evne talk about the History channel which is more interested in Pawn stars 24/7 and mostly reruns.

Sad.

Anyone remember "Time Warp?"  All they did was film stuff in slow motion, then show the film.  It was fun.

I'm pretty sure it's Health Cliff, that's no myth.

Amish mafia is high quality entertainment. It may be the funniest show on tv. That badass midget is a riot.

Long gone are the days of the hitler channel.

I find "Naked and Afraid" a greatly enjoyable show. It's what I always wanted Survivor to be.

God, you'd think TV had just been invented, given all the crap people are willing to watch.

"Hey, look, it's on the movin' picture box! Let's stare at it for the next three hours!"

2013-12-23 12:56:53 PM
I'm waiting for the "Naked and Afraid" spinoff, "Bathed and Brought to My Room".

I like naked and afraid. Reminds me why we invented clothes.

Mythbusters is about the only sciency show left on discovery. Just think Honey Boo Boo is on the learning channel. Ancient Aliens is on History.

That show jumped the shark a long time ago..   Now they just take de-bunk video game or movie stunts...  Then other knuckle heads just find an excuse to attach explosive to shiat..

Yep, not even Star Wars Mythbusters could get me to watch that crap either.

At least Discovery Canada still has how it's made. There is nothing else on that channel that interests me. Much like most other channels.

The reason I finally said "Screw it!" a few years ago and dropped Dish Network. I find better programming on the 19 channels I get for FREE with my outdoor roof antenna!

Proof that you no longer watch the show. Not all of the episodes are tv/movie or video games. This last season they finally revisited the JATO rocket-car, and did a couple movie/TV things but not overwhelmingly so. Are there entertainment only elements? Yeah, but doesn't make it a bad show.

They average about 2mil viewers per episode, have for the last 5 years or so, and I doubt that stops any time soon.

My guilty pleasures on cable are the cop shows, although the reality cop and "true crime" shows are predictable.  Was hooked on Breaking Bad, but now "Mob City" has my attention.

I'd watch if we only used contestants who were commercial real estate developers. The premise would be they caused other people to be homeless and/or unable to afford their former neighborhood, now the tables have turned. Put the commercial real estate developers, architects, everyone that profits from destroying formerly livable neighborhoods in the middle of an ungentrified urban neighborhood with only their wits to survive. meanwhile hordes of the underclass are free to hunt them down for food.

BBC America has had some great shows on like Bang Goes the Theory and Man Lab. I did love last years man lab christmas episode where they "cut" down a tree with demolition explosives and vaporized alcohol to breath. James May has another good show where he plays with old toys and makes them fit into some grand project. On one he built a race track for slot cars that was like a mile long or longer IIRC.

His erector set bridge episode was good.

Mythbusters is only watchable to people who think of themselves as "nerds" but have little to no science background.

Now Hunting Sasquatch or whatever, that's a show.

It used to be.  Now it's just another soap opera.  As The Propeller Turns.  The Guiding Mercury-Vapor Light.  All My Children (can't hack the sea)  I feel like my mom watching her stories.

How come whenever I check the guide, BBCA is ALWAYS showing either Doctor Who or ST:TNG.

Mythbusters is the only one I watch and Deadliest Catch is the only other one that I've even heard of.

// TV is in decline, why I remember back when I had a series 2 tivo it was a balancing act trying to get 70 season passes recorded with a single tuner.

Now I have a S3 tivo, and my season pass list is around 20-25 shows long.

// shows dropped off and nothing worthy replaced them (EX, what is today's equivalent of Stargate? Farscape? Battlestar Galactica?)

Because you're not watching carefully.  They also show "V for Vendetta".

Still better than the Wrestling Channel. Er, I mean the 'SyFy' channel.

Deadliest Catch is excellent, and I'll admit to Amish Mafia being my guilty pleasure.  It's one of those shows that's so terrible and fake that you can't help but be amused by it.  Kinda like Jerry Springer.

Wish they'd do a show focused on critical analysis of "paranormal" phenomena and conspiracy theories, pointing out flaws and debunking them.

I'd take the worst episode of MYTHBUSTERS over almost all of the other shows on the list (even DEADLIEST CATCH,
which while engrossing is rather repetetive).

Nor do I. Top Gear is the reason I started watching BBCA
