You don't have to go to the Beatles or Stones, Subby, Miley Cyrus's ass had a bigger year than Kanye. The only reason I knew he had an album out this year was because of the naked-Kim-Kardashian-on-a-motorcycle music video.

Gonz: ELVIS YOU DOLT!

The musicians' strike of 1942-44 you dolt!

Long story short: musicians had a union back then. Big bands go on strike, preventing radio stations from playing songs with instruments in them. Record companies and radio stations get around it by signing bands led by vocalists who didn't need instruments, with Frank Sinatra leading the way.

Kind of a bad play by the union there.

Subby, that headline is a HOTY candidate. Love it, good job.

Kanye has two good songs: Jesus Walks, and Golddigger. And Jamie Foxx more makes golddigger as fun as it is.

The only thing he's ever done that was (unfortunately) influential is causing musicians to act like genuine attention whores instead of garnering attention for being genuinely talented.  And that a goddamned shame.

Sounds like Kanye gave this guy a load of rash and a ride on the Khardasioan baloney poney for this comment.

As West remarked in that  Timesinterview all those months ago, "I am so credible and so influential and so relevant that I will change things." In 2013, Kanye West was the genius we deserved, even when we didn't.

Kanye's latest album just sounds lazy.  He may be a creative guy with some decent ideas, but I think he forgot that a decent idea by itself isn't worth much.  You have to do more than just layer some sloppy, uninspired sounds and laughably bad lyrics on top of your idea.  The lack of effort really shines through on every single track.

Lou Reed compared Kanye's latest album to Metal Machine Music, and I think it's absolutely true.  Metal Machine Music was Lou Reed's absolute favorite thing -- feedback from an electric guitar -- presented in its rawest form.  Yeezus is Kanye West's absolute favorite thing -- Kanye West's own hubris  -- presented in its rawest form.  Both are interesting.  Neither is good.

Kanye is not giving credit where it is due. It is the autotune that is "most influential person in Pop Music" I mean everyone today uses it and gives it no credit. fark You all.

Also the most influential band/person has to be Elvis or the Beatles. In pop music, Madonna. Everyone tried to copy her.

Yeezus was the 37th top selling album of 2013. 37th.  Below "Blurred Lines".  "Bound 2" was the only song that entered the popular culture.  The gay rumors, KimYe, baby North West, and the ridiculous interviews and concert act as a savior is the what I know about Kanye, and it's NOT influential.  It's TMZ/People magazine crap.  Jennifer Aniston's haircut had more influence in it's day.  (and comparing himself to Jesus?  Does he know they literally have 2Pac performing and he's been dead for 15 years?  Now that's a resurrection!)

Timberlake's 20/20 Experience was far more influential this year putting Justin and Jay-Z above Kanye.

Hell, Adele's "21" is STILL outselling "Yeezus" and it was released TWO AND A HALF YEARS AGO.  She's had a huge influence on music - or at least what labels will promote.

And who do you like? One Direction? Cause you know, that would be ok. I try not to judge people's taste in music, cause that's a horrible thing to do.

/I'm guessing odds are real good you haven't heard 2/3rds of the songs I listed

I listen to a lot of stuff, rap being one of them. Nothing in the last couple of years has got me interested though besides that Big Boi CD. And this douche hasn't stopped running his mouth since that Golddigger song he ripped off from Ray Charles. Yeah I have listened to his "music", and most of it is stolen.  He's like the Shia Lebouf of rappers.

Three things:

1) I couldn't care less about Kanye outside of his music. You can say the same about any artist. Who cares what they do off the stage/screen?

2) Everyone samples. Even Big Boi. Check it out: http://www.whosampled.com/. You'll be surprised who you find here.

3) Sampling is an art, and not an easy one to be good at. If you don't think so, go ahead and make some #1 singles.

LewDux: Sale numbers are important? I could swear.. Dream probably

Relevant, though certainly not the only indicator of 'influence.'  They help hint at reach of an album/song.  Especially for someone of Kanye's stature.  He's not some obscure singer/rapper who never broke through and ends up secretly influencing someone.

Plus, the entire premise of the article is that Kanye, this year, was the most influential artist OF ALL TIME.
What did it, the article says?  His clever sampling?  (Puff Daddy was much more influential); His Bound music video?  (littered with stock nature footage, and he wears tie die and flannel?  Or did they mean it being a video of somebody nailing Kim K, in which case, Ray J was more influential).  Or is it that people don't like him... seriously, the article supposes that he's so influential precisely because he's a self-important douche.

It's not that I don't think he's influential.  But most influential ever?  Ugh.  Unlike some people, he isn't ushering in a new genre or massive shift in music.  Or even the culture at large like Elvis, Beatles, Stones, Nirvana, Run DMC/Beastie Boys, Public Enemy/NWA... or many, many others.

I was not aware that he sang, and I have never seen him play an instrument (playing, not triggering loops). He is not a musician. I will gladly state otherwise if someone can link me to a video of him actually performing music.

Ok, you are arguing stuff I never said or care about. It does sound like someone wants to give Yeezus a beej though! I bet he'll enjoy that!

LewDux: weddingsinger: Yeezus was the 37th top selling album of 2013.

Sale numbers are important? I could swear.. Dream probably

Nickelback also sold bazillions of records, therefore they must be great and influential.

McDonalds outsells Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, therefore it must be the superior product.

The last album I bought was Yoyo Ma's (along with Meyer and O'Connor) "Appalachian Journey." It was ten years old, and at a year sale.
The first album I ever bought with my own money was "Revolver", and even then it was six or eight years old.

Personal tastes in music change, as does the public's. The good ones endure. The rest claw and fight when their 15 minutes is up, but they still go away.

Don't conflate quality with influence.  Nickelback is terrible but their broad reach means that they have an influence on music, even if it's a negative one.  McDonalds is certainly more influential than Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, given the former's immense cultural penetration.

Autotune is not an instrument

Unfortunately, it is becoming one. It worked for Cher that one time, but now it is becoming obnoxious. The person by the name of T-Pain is the worst contributor, and is credited to have made it popular.

Living in south Florida I'm aware of T Pain. He even did an awful remake of the Miami Dolphins fight song.

The original was pretty bad. His autotuned version is beyond awful.

I've done music using samples and I've played many real instruments.  The only hard thing about using samples compared to playing actual music is making sure you have proper clearance.  There's a reason you have hundreds of "producaz" using fruity loops to make beats for every actual musician out there.

So lets hear it, then.

I've used samples, too.  Other people's samples, for a reason.

I want to know about creating them, like with ReCycle.  Because that, to date, hasn't been a breeze.

I play guitars made by other people, too.  They aren't a breeze to create, either.

Yeah.  Mine sound like crap, too, but that's my entire point.   People claim that it takes no talent to use samples generally haven't used samples, or if they have, produced crap with them.

Getting a kick because on some other site someone asked what songs are good to teach beginner guitarists, and I said that the first things I taught my then 10-year-old daughter were:
1) California Stars (written by Woody Guthrie, performed by Billy Bragg & Wilco),
2)  I Wanna be Your Dog (gotta learn them power chords!),
3) Femme Fatale, and
4) All Tomorrow's Parties.

I still make her play the first two with me once in a while when I'm feeling Dad-Rocky, but four years later she plays & sings those VU songs on a weekly basis.

My boss plays that new Kanye album at work sometimes. It's the only noise I've ever asked him to change. Disjointed, horribly paced, overly aggressive with offensive and childish 'lyrics'. I, quite seriously, think it's one of the worst albums I've ever heard.

Coupled with his narcissistic insanity.... Well I just don't buy it.

It's not so much a matter of different taste, as it is having the sense of taste and lacking it.  Although, to be fair, it is logical to say that the first and only flavor you have tasted is the best that you have tasted.  But what will happen when homarjr tries genuinely good music?  What then??  We can only speculate.
