Cajnik: They're a little late to the party, and I doubt we'll see a followup tag

Look, a little late is a far sight better than the nothing we more or less did during Rwanda.

The US does have at least two good size units of American trained forces in Africa in Kenya and Uganda strengthening the AU forces and we have supplied them but this was manly a French effort with air lift help from the UK. Lets not take away the fact that French President Francois Hollande has pushed for the peacekeeper effort against strong opposition at home and within the EU. He risked his government on this move, Obama has risked pretty little. This article is grasping at best.

Yeah France has been the lead on this. It's insulting to one's intelligence that think progress wants to credit Obama or the US.

Not that avoiding this conflict was hard or anything. CAR avert any conflict by threatening to turn the country around and going home.

The US being involved at all in countries that are full of black people and empty of oil is unusual.

Actually after Somalia and the blackhawk down incident the US began funding and training those Ugandan and Kenyan forces as a 3rd party reaction force supported by US African Command and air assets. The goal was we could curtail Al-Quada and other Islamic militants in the region without putting our own boots on the ground and avoid the PR disaster if it goes south. For example during the Kenyan mall siege where do you think the SCAR equipped troops got them? There are often UAV or C-130 gun ship actions in that part of the world, but no one is paying attention

Ctrl+F "duck".

Phrase not found.

Yup, we missed it.

Michelle probably saw a re-run of The West Wing an it reminded her people in Africa are in trouble, too and she told the O man to do something for those poor poor people.
So poor.

2013-12-23 12:59:55 PM
Good on everyone involved to preventing it from happening.

And now there won't be enough food and everyone will starve from overpopulation.

Thanks Obama!

US Trained, French backed (the French are really very good at this kind of thing), and locally policed.

That is exactly how this kind of thing should happen.

Thanks, Obama!

Really?

The president of the United States asked for the people of the CAR for calm, speaking to them directly through the Internet and radio. The president shook $100 million loose from the federal budget, to purchase much-needed supplies to the African peacekeepers struggling to stem the killing and airlift in reinforcements.

Activists and U.S. officials alike say that the speed at which the United States has responded is unprecedented and part of it is due to a little heralded document and the bureaucratic tool it created.

Presidential Study Directive 10 (PSD-10) came into being in 2011, declaring for the first time that "preventing mass atrocities and genocide is a core national security interest and a core moral responsibility of the United States."

Because France handled it with actual troops, USA was not involved.

That doesn't mean Obama should get credit for something he did. I've been around the politics tab long enough to know this.

If you read the article it does appear the US is trying to take a lot of credit for work the African Union and France have been doing for some time.

They have thousands of peacekeepers on the ground, the US has few.

I realize the President made an announcement recently,  but this article seems pretty un-balanced.
I would agree with "This article is grasping at best."

So, PSD-10, lines out that genocide and mass murder undermine US security and it is our duty as a nation to end these atrocities. Cool, I can agree with that...but, how does sending Dennis Rodman to Best Korea close down their Concentration camps?
