Yeah because now they have the whole thing they can setup for the next few days to rake in some moolah.
Actually here they've started taking donations through debit cards.

You know what? I'd feel sympathy for the Salvation Army if it weren't for their history of discriminating against homosexuals. They may be backpedaling on that stance now (because the Christians have lost their "moral" battle against the evil gays) but it wasn't long ago that they were known to stop charity services and deny aid to homosexuals.

So yeah... Karma, biatch.

They lobbied for some pretty awful anti-gay legislation until they were outed a couple years ago. Them they quickly stopped having an opinion on gay rights. Their convictions melted as soon as their $$ was threatened.

Instead of a bell the bell ringer should be waving a glock. He'd get more money that way and it would be unpossible to rob him. This isnt rocket surgery.

I'll be first.

Back in the day, the SA didn't really care about what religion you were, nor even what sexuality you were when they gave people help. Now they act more like other, lesser known Christian charities, pushing the faith before giving the care which is in direct contradiction to their own belief systems. So for me to care when a kettle full of cash bound for a group that would now a days go towards the goal of trying to convert a couple of fellow Jews (and people of other faiths & non faiths), more so than giving help to the needy and homeless as they used to claim, then my lack of hope that the money is recovered will be ongoing as well as my continued hope that the SA goes back to actual charity and not this Christian Dominionist BS.

This is kind of both brilliant and stupid, all at the same time.  Brilliant, in that the criminal was able to pull it off, stupid, in that almost every place that has a Salvation Army collection, there is a bank of CCTV cameras nearby.

I have a CSB with my experiences with SA:

In 2010 I arrived into SF as a head case. I had identified as gay and atheist but the SA placed me in their Railton facility and assisted me to get a job installing server hardware. They never once had me go to church, never tried to convert me. They just helped me get somewhere.

I can fully understand where some hate comes in, and that my experience may not be typical. But they helped me get back into the real world.

And yes, my previous response to Zero was snark.

I work the SA Angel Tree distribution every year. Last I checked, they didn't ask which children or parents were homosexuals in order to get a giant bag full of toys and clothes from Santa. Should they discriminate? No. That doesn't negate the good they do.

Millions of people get help from the SA each year without discrimination, especially through their disaster response  services, food pantries, utility assistance, and Christmas assistance.    A few years ago I was spending the night with a friend at an apartment complex that caught on fire.  My friend and I were safe in a different building, but we still stayed up all night. The Salvation Army showed up almost as fast as the firefighters.  They handed out hotel, food, and clothing vouchers indiscriminately and set up a mobile kitchen to feed the displaced people and emergency responders.

I donate to a few charities, I even volunteered to count donations for the Cancer Benefit in Ocean Grove a few years back. But even if I didn't, that doesn't dismiss the practices of a charity that is dedicated towards converting people to their religion (which should be done with in church collection plate money, not general public giving funds with their assumption it would be used to help people) over and above the goal of sheltering and feeding the homeless and/or hungry.

No, but biatching about homophobic groups who nevertheless do good work for the causes they believe in while at the same time NOT donating to charities that do work YOU like is pretty hypocritical. It's essentially saying "I'd donate to charities if they did what I want; but until they all do I'm not donating to any of them"

Penoatle: Thought the anti-SA bandwagon was over with

No more so than opposition to other cults and hate groups like the Scientologists or the Klan, SA sort of being an ugly hybrid of the two.

/Then again I have lived in a place where in living memory they still used to outright kidnap kids. they literally would forcibly abduct minority children without parental consent, move them across the country and force new 'christian' names on them, and put them in religious orphanages to be 'deprogrammed' and raised as 'civilized' people in the SA image. All with at least tacit if not active approval from authorities.
The -only- reason they stopped it was that the authorities simply don't allow it anymore. The farkers are so misguided as to be purely evil.
