If you haven't been back for a while, be prepared for an eyeful.  The South Campus has gotten built out and they aren't done developing by a long shot.  Downtown Melbourne has revitalized and has a heck of a bar / restaurant presence, and Palm Bay is now a pretty strong contender for the driving force behind the Fark Florida tag.  If I didn't still live in Melbourne I wouldn't believe it... still kind of stuns me sometimes.  FIT is serious about becoming *THE* Tech school of the southeast.

Yeah, Palm Bay was still very rural when I was there. I lived in the middle of nowhere that is now severely overbuilt the last time I looked. Right by the campus was considered a "blighted area" for tax redevelopment. The mall was built while was there. We sold the south campus that was primarily for AS trade degrees that was located in (Stuart?). There was also the armadillo research center that was in the forefront of leukemia research at that time. Heck my first two job offers after graduation were both semi-local. Pan Am weather operations at the cape or Perkin-Elmer R&D (the Hubble mess before they fixed the optics). I decided go follow the money and left the area. I miss the weather though.....

When I was there (00-04) Palm Bay and the surrounding area was already up there for Fark.  Downtown Melbourne was in pretty good shape but I never went there too much.  I started right after they finished the Olin engineering and biology buildings, and they finished the Clemente center either right before or right after I got there.  I hope it continues to grow.  The Bio program I went through was really good for undergrad preparation for grad school.  Not sure how it was when the other bio folks here were there, but when I was there they had a 4 course program (biometry, ecology, community ecology, marine ecology) that focused intensively on experimental design and writing and is a major reason why I've moved on through a PhD and an NSF postdoc- and I know several other folks on similar trajectories.  I can't say enough good things about FIT, but I will say the library and the chemistry teaching labs were awful.

Speaking of Fark, CSB time- I used to catch snakes all around Melbourne and nearby for research and for fun.  One of the places I used to go was Stickmarsh- a canal/swamp network that connects to Blue Cypress Lake that you can get to off of Babcock street about 15 miles south of Palm Bay.  There's a 6-mile dirt road that runs to a boat ramp along a canal and has no other road access that was pretty good.  Anyway, I'm driving down this road, and about 4 miles down I come across a pickup pulled off the road.  This skanky woman runs up, reeking of booze, and says shes been kidnapped by these two guys.  They look hispanic, and approach behind her in a way I can't see their hands and can't tell if they're using her to carjack me or something.  They also show no recognition that they understand what she's saying.  I reversed and got the fark out of there and called the cops.  They show up a half hour later, I tell them the situation, and they pull M-16s out of their trunks and start walking down the road when the truck shows up.

It turned out the two hispanic guys were migrant workers who couldn't speak an ounce of English.  They'd picked up the woman (a prostitute) from Fellsmere, and once they were done they couldn't understand that she was ready to go home.

I dunno if you've ever been to Fellsmere, but the hooker was about what you'd expect for a town of 4500 in the middle of the swamp a half-hour drive from anything.

2013-12-22 10:53:28 PM
FARK- I almost forgot- it wasn't the first time that hooker had been picked up by the cops from that spot in the past month

The library really sucked when I was there was well.
Fellsmere really brings back memories as well, but for different reasons.
In my time the area across from the south end of campus was where the "ladies" hung out on the corners. It was a higher crime area. That and when I went the school was something like 90% male. So every once and a while a van would pull up by Grissom and you would see a long line of undergrads waiting until security figured out why the van was rocking. At the time it was given, I think it was the Olin contribution, was the single largest monetary contribution ever given to a university. It made lots of headlines.

Well, if you count much of East University Blvd, I'd say the statement still stands.

Library and the chem labs are both decent, but the physics labs leave something to be desired... usually in the form of non-ancient lab equipment that actually works.

Yes, murdering any persons who doesn't share your political, philosophical or religious views, would of course make for a better world.

Naturally.

About 65% male now, but I could still absolutely see this happening.

"What are you doing in there?" "Experimenting." "Ah, yes, carry on, then."

Wow, it's almost 50-50!  It was about 70% male when I was there, but biology was probably 60% female.

/Of course many of them were looking for MRS degrees and rich engineer/pilot husbands and wanted nothing to do with fellow poor biology majors

Now, alba, be a good little drooling crazy person and go find your atendend and get your overdue shot of thorazine. It's time for beddy-bye, so get your jammies on, go wee-wee, and get ready to get strapped in. Mkay?

A few last memories. My favorite bars, Rick's Oak Tree and The Dixie. I taught classes to put myself through school. at the time a year's admission to Sea World was cheap. Several of would go to Sea World to study where we wouldn't be tracked down.
