What she said was pretty awful.

And she's in PR.

And Twatter is public.

So...so I have zero f*cks to give.

Holy shiat.. That's a pretty farking bad tweet.. There is no amount of spin you could put on that to explain yourself..  That's shiat you post on 4Chan or on Fark under an alias and pray no one can track you down via a Google search.

Seconded.

Also, I don't think her getting canned was ever in doubt.

She might want to consider another career, or less alcoholism. Or both. Probably both. I'm not sure how far you can really climb in the PR game if you've caused drunken PR disasters.

Still, who knows, maybe stormfront needs a PR rep. She is, as she pointed out, white.

2013-12-22 05:11:18 PM
Eh, I hate to see someone fired over a tweet, but what she said was just so, so wrong. White women are a major target of rape in Africa, so she's definitely at risk for getting AIDS. I really don't know what she was thinking.

How can you tweet something and NOT expect a full on racial shiatstorm?

Racist jokes are only funny with small audiences, not a gorillion twitter followers.

I don't understand the tweet at all. I mean, either it consists of four disparate sentences - in which case they illustrate 'you get AIDS when you go to Africa' which is non-sensical but not horrible, and then 'I'm white' at the end, which is probably true. OR they illustrate some train of thought in which each sentence logically follows the one before it, but I'm incapable of following that logic. You don't get AIDS when you go to Africa but only if you're white? That doesn't make any sense.

I'm sure some farker can explain it all to me, but I just don't see it. I just see confusion.

Maybe so. There are people that believe that as long as you are white, have hetero sex with only white non IV drug users, that you can't get aids.

Given that IAC is best known for buying up websites long after their popularity declined -- and then letting them slide further into oblivion -- I'm not sure they were getting their money's worth in terms of PR in the first place.

But hey, if you don't believe me, you can always Ask Jeeves.

But, the entitled twatwaffle happened to do it under her personal handle, all public and shiat, identifying her employee status.

As a digital media PR executive, her meteoric descent - OF HER OWN ACCORD - was spectacular to watch.  Given her other tweets that have surfaced in the past couple of days, my guess is she had more than a few 'frenemies' who pounced on this.  Her cataclysmic ignorance of the social media climate in the midst of the Phil Robertson chatter, her obvious lack of self/social awareness, and her position as (presumably) a freakishly overpriced executive, these all created a perfect storm for her to set herself up as a massive target.

She got exactly what she deserved, and her AW tendencies unwittingly threw her, front and center, into the lion's den of her own demise.

You are suggesting that you should give up your right to free speech if your employer demands it.  Turn this around.  What if you were fired because you publicly supported gay rights, or abortion, or gun rights, or any number of other issues.  Depending on your location, each of those stances could cause "negative publicity".  And given how easy it is to get information on someone via the internet, your employer could be easily discovered.

Don't support her firing simply because you found her statement offensive.  That's how you end up losing rights.

Except holding a job from a private company is not a right,   and in most states employment is "at will".  (With the exemptions of a very few things they're not allowed to fire you for).    Being a demonstrated idiot whose actions have drawn a bunch of negative attention upon herself,   with her being identified as your employee,   is not a protected class.

I fully support her firing, because she's an idiotic twat who, in the course of her job, is supposed to assist/direct the public perception of clients if IAC.

Now, in her role, as a the head of the PR department, it's HER advice and counsel that clients are paying IAC to help them promote, via advertising, promotion, and social media.  If this dumb bag of hair is so careless with her very own personal branding, then her judgment towards that of the clients, AND the people she manages, is questionable.

IAC was correct in firing her because, if she can't even be counted on to take the minimal amount of care on her personal branding, then IAC's clients have right to worry that her carelessness - and the example she sets for those underneath her - could put their brands in jeopardy.  Also, this same carelessness could impact IAC in a breach of contract if she was so mindless with their clients' promotion or public branding.

Having gotten a degree in PR, I have worked a PR crisis or two back when I worked in it full time.  This is 101 stuff, and just mind-bogglingly stupid.

A corporation has no right to curtail your free speech except when you are on the job.  Outside of the workplace, your rights trump them.  If this woman was on the job (company travel?) when she made the statement, then they can fire her.  If she was on vacation, then things get a bit tricky.  Sure, most states are at will hire, but a company can still get in deep doo doo for firing someone exercising a civil right.

I'd simply love to see this person file a wrongful termination suit....it'd be nice to see her having to pay court costs to the company in addition to her loss of job.

I agree, and I don't, but it sucks to have to be promoting the multinational big corporate company brand (whatever that may be) 24/7.  They are some of the most corrupt, two-faced assholes I've ever known.  Sometimes you just want to be your own person with your own opinions and even have the freedom to make mistakes.  I'm not talking about tweeting like this lady did, but I was told I couldn't even be drinking at a bar if I was wearing the company logo.

All part of the almighty capitalist plan, I guess. I run my own business and we still have to worry about what clients will think and we work for some of those big corporations who have massive non-disclosure agreements and vague contracts filled with weasel words that are designed solely for their benefit. And sometimes you just have to hold your nose and sign them.

piccolo: I wonder how much was donated to AIDS charities resulted?

I think what she said was incredibly stupid and horrible, but am interested to know the extent of the impact - beyond (legit) outrage and into outrage fueled altruism. Difficult to measure, but not impossible.

Mike Milken the junk bond king did more to end human suffering than all the anti apartheid/hands across America/farm aid do-gooders of the 80s put together

ZAZ: Any of you trying to analyze the tweet are putting way more thought into it than she did.

Other than the fact that it is a "tweet", I don't understand why anyone would take offense.

Well she's getting to user those PR skills now,  issued an apology;

OgreMagi: Who's twitter account did she use?  If it was her personal account, it was none of her employer's business.  If it was the company account, yeah, that's a firing.

OgreMagi: Mugato: OgreMagi: You are suggesting that you should give up your right to free speech if your employer demands it.

How many times in the threads on this site alone has it been made clear free speech doesn't apply to privately owned companies? Is there some manner of interpretive dance that can make it clearer?

A corporation has no right to curtail your free speech except when you are on the job.  Outside of the workplace, your rights trump them.  If this woman was on the job (company travel?) when she made the statement, then they can fire her.  If she was on vacation, then things get a bit tricky.  Sure, most states are at will hire, but a company can still get in deep doo doo for firing someone exercising a civil right.

Everytime it is mentioned, her company is mentioned, it makes her company look bad, guilty by association. They really had to fire her before her actions caused the company lost revenue. I cannot fathom how anyone can defend this woman or Phil Robertson with the free speech umbrella, offensive racist and homophobic comments are not free speech, its bigotry and hatred. Hate speech is not free

ongbok: FloydA: I still don't understand the point she was trying to make.  Does she actually think white people are immune?

Maybe so. There are people that believe that as long as you are white, have hetero sex with only white non IV drug users, that you can't get aids.

bigworld2000: How can someone who has gotten so far in the PR industry think that something like that could ever be okay?

Some people have the belief that they can do what they want without consequence. I'm pretty sure you have run across a person or two like this in your life.

GORDON: Good thing the internet tattled on her.  We all love watching a train wreck, don't we.

Stay classy.

She should have taken that advice before she sent that tweet out publicly.

I'm sorry that you have the Aids ongbok.  Rubber up people lest you end up like poor ongbok, the guy with aids.

Well that is news to me. Guess your mother and your sisters have it also then, sorry.

She was born in South Africa, what a shock.

Pumpernickel bread: Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Eh, I hate to see someone fired over a tweet, but what she said was just so, so wrong. White women are a major target of rape in Africa, so she's definitely at risk for getting AIDS. I really don't know what she was thinking.

Heh, just shows there is a venue for tasteless humor, but a public twitter feed ain't it. Had she said the same thing here under a Fark handle, no one would have given it a second look

Sure they would have. At least three people would have posted "2/10" and/or "welcome to my ignore list".

Danger Avoid Death: Johnson: Researcher: I'm not sure how far you can really climb in the PR game if you've caused drunken PR disasters.

She'll be back someplace else.  Her father is a SA billionaire.
How do you think she got this "job" that lets her flit about all over the world in the first place?
Now another rich person's kid can have that job.

That being said, she may have to change her name. Its kind of toxic now after all the PR exposure.

Well, if "Sacco" is now out, how about "Vanzetti"?

Or would that just be anarchy?

Bravo!!!

The way I interpreted her Tweet, it was three separate disconnected statements. The first sentence, then the next two, then the last one. So I was confused as to why she wanted to get AIDS and why she said she was white when I could already see her picture, though maybe "I'm white!" could be some kind of white power slogan or something.

I think she's hot.

She can have a job for me anytime. In my pants!

If she's salaried she's very rarely "off the clock", if ever.  It doesn't matter what account she was using.

2013-12-23 01:04:48 PM
Sounds like she was not very qualified for such a job.
