There's still wine in the bottle, too -- what could it be?  "Moose piss?" Koch suggested.

This IS a free market solution.

There is demand for fancy bottles that are (most likely) filled with undrinkable liquids that the very rich use to show off to their peer group.  Since the supply of bottles is very small, these courageous entrepreneurs have stepped up to the plate, and have begun manufacturing products to meet the demand.  But once again the mainstream media shows its anti-business by painting these creative capitalists in the worst possible light.

Shameful, really.

I wonder if his tax accountant figured out a way to socialize his losses.

I once tried to write off the cost of Boone's Farm Tickle Pink when my investment with Mary Jane Rottencrotch had disappointing returns.

The IRS was quite amused. The whole building was having a great time with it. Even the guys on the group W bench. And then it got all quiet and still...

It's only fraud if you trick someone richer than you. If you trick the poor, it's outsmarting them, and you deserve what you just stole.

LittleSmitty: Does one buy a 250 + year old bottle of wine to drink, or just to say "I have a 250 year old bottle of La-De-Da because I'm a rich douche that can afford it?"

Yeah, I know the answer. I just can't see buying booze to look at.

I'm just trying to wrap my head around the idea of "counterfeit wine" in the first place. My boss told me about this story when it broke, and apparently the guy wasn't just faking the BOTTLES he was actually faking the WINE. In case anyone opened and drank the stuff. He was making FORGED WINE.

I mean, holy crap, what kind of niche crime is that?!?

Aquapope: "He says he has spent $4.5 million on 421 bottles of wine that turned out to be counterfeit."

He spent $10,600 per bottle of wine.  That's stupid in and of itself.  Can a wine be worth, what, $500 per glass?  Would you buy anything with that kind of extreme value without an expert to validate it?  Or is throwing yourself on the mercy of the masses as a victim such a good idea in this situation?  I don't know who the thief is, but I give you a big Bravo and Do It Again, for the lulz.

The libertarian paradise and the market will just correct this and prevent this person from selling more wine, of course after they have stolen a ton of money from everyone.  I know it is not all libertarians, but so many of the derpers I meet feel that there should be no regulation or legal remedies and that the magic of the free market will solve all problems, instead of realizing that scam artists will take over even more than they do now.  The fact that one of the Koch's got nailed in this is just a happy for me.

TuteTibiImperes: Not saying there aren't excellent forgeries out there, but:

FTFA: He show Teichner a "nice old bottle," a 1737 Lafite. Its label reads "1737 Chateau Lafite Rothschild."  "You know, the Rothschilds didn't own Lafite in 1737," Koch said.

Maybe he should have done a bit of research on the bottle before spending big bucks on it.  If his time is worth more than the two minutes it would have taken to Google the history of the winery, apparently the money he spent on that bottle wasn't that big of a deal to him.
