The criminal complaint states that Santiago, who referred to the animals as "livestock," acknowledged killing at least 10 dogs by hanging or electrocution. He said he used a cable to fashion a noose for one dog that bit his daughter and wouldn't let go, adding that it "took three minutes for the dog to die," according to the complaint.

Don't even kill him. Just chain him up and leave him in a sewer with plenty of rats.

While I'm not opposed to opposing views, I am opposed to their views.  They seem to oppose everything and I'm opposed to the needless drama.  I'm the opposing opinions opposition I suppose.  Maybe I should pose for a picture about my prose to oppose those pros.

Why can't dogs be considered "livestock"?  People in the US have attributed to certain animals human traits that alters their perception that dear old Fido is useful for work, war and food.  This guy did nothing wrong but not abide by city ordinances in regards to humane treatment to a creature no more special than cattle.

One evening a man and wife were lying in bed. He was reading and she was watching television and brooding.
"Darling," she started.
"Um," he replied.
"If I died would you get married again?" she continued.
Knowing this was a trick question, he thought for a moment before answering. "I don't see why not. Our marriage has been a happy one and you'd want me to be happy again, wouldn't you?" he countered laying down his book and taking her hand.
"Yes, I suppose," she answered.
They continued in silence for a while; his reading and her watching television and continuing to brood.
"Darling," she started again.
"Um," he replied.
"If you got married again, would you let your new wife wear my dresses?"
He put his book down and once again took her hand. Again realizing this was a loaded question with no correct answer, he thought for a moment and answered. "I guess I would. After all, it would be a shame just to throw away those nice clothes of yours."
They lapsed back into silence; his reading and her watching television and brooding even more.
"Darling," she once again started.
"Um," he replied.
"Would you let her wear my shoes?"
This time without putting his book aside, he said, "Yes, and for the same reason. It would be a shame to throw away all your expensive shoes."
They lapsed back into silence; his reading and her watching television and brooding herself into a darker mood.
"Darling," she said, renewing the inquisition.
"Um," he replied.
"Would you let her use my new Ping golf clubs?"
With no hesitation, he answered, "Of course not, she's left-handed."

Ive thought this too but it's an argument just not worth having. Like arguing religeon or obama.

Livestock has a specific meaning....generally animals "raised in an agricultural setting to produce commodities such as food, fiber and labor."  Dogs *can* be livestock (sled dogs, herding dogs, dogs raised for meat, etc...) it's just rare in the United States.  The vast majority are pets and there are laws that make consumption of dog meat awfully tricky (so you won't ever see dog meat on a restaurant in the US, except possibly on an Indian reservation, but that seems very unlikely too - but possibly not illegal).

Of course, like everything else, it's not quite so simple.  Certain jurisdictions give a legal definition to livestock and so, in certain parts of California (as an example) dogs are NEVER legally considered livestock and ALL horses are (even if it is just a pet that doesn't do any work).

· Section 3080. "Livestock means any cattle, sheep, swine, goat, or horse, mule or other equines".

Interestingly though, by most reasonable definitions, dogs kept for dog fighting would be livestock in the same way horses that are kept for racing are considered livestock.  So, his choice of words were the most correct that I can think of....that's not to say dog fighting is or isn't appropriate, but livestock seems to be the correct word for 'fighting dogs'.  They certainly aren't pets or companion animals.

I, for one, would disapprove just as strongly had they led an equally cruel and abusive multi-state cow-fighting operation.

Years ago, when I was first learning to play golf, I was out on the course with some friends.  It was a beautiful day and I said "Wow!  It would be really neat to do this with my wife sometime."   They all just stopped and looked at me with expressions on their faces as if I had said something like "The Pope and llama soup election results."  Complete incomprehension.

fnordest: One evening a man and wife were lying in bed.  . . . "Of course not, she's left-handed."

Golf jokes are a lot more amusing than the subject of torturing dogs to death, whether they should be considered livestock or not.

So . . .

A man and his wife are out golfing.  On the 7th hole, he slices badly and goes into the woods.  He finds his ball and realizes he directly behind an old equipment shed - no shot at the green.  He's about to chip out onto the fairway when his wife says that there are huge doors on both sides of the shed and that if they open both doors, he'll have a clear view of the green and can hit a low shot right at it.  He sizes up the situation and agrees.  They open the doors, he carefully lines up his shot and takes a mighty swing.  Unfortunately, the ball comes up too fast, hits the beam over top the door, the ball ricochets back and hits his wife directly in the forehead, killing her instantly.

A year later, he's out on the course with a buddy and, on the 7th hole, slices badly and ends up in the same place.  As he's about to chip out onto the fairway when his buddy points out that there are doors on both sides of the shed and if they opened them up, he'd have a shot at the green.

"Not doing that again," he snapped at his buddy.

"Why not?"

"Tried that last year and ended up with a double-bogey!"

A foursome is out on a top-notch course that they've been trying to get a chance to play for a couple years.  Not to mention it has cost each of them a lot more than they normally spend on green fees.  As they're on the first tee, waiting for the foursome ahead to clear, one of the guys allows as how this outing is costing him a bunch.

"How so?" one of his buddies asks

"In order to get out of the house today, I had to promise to spend all day tomorrow at the mall shopping with my wife."

"That's nothing," says a second guy. "In order to get to play this course today, I had to promise to spend all next weekend at my in-laws' cottage - while they're there!"

"Still not too bad."  allowed a third.  "In order to do this today, I had to promise my wife that I'd power-wash and reseal our deck, her Mom's deck, and her worthless brother's deck."

The fourth says nothing.   Finally one of the guys asks him what he had to do in order to get out to play golf.

"This morning, I turned over, slapped her on the ass and said "What'll it be, golf or sex?"  She never even moved.  Just said "Have a good round.""

I'd wager that the number of canids killed per year by golf courses and the number killed by dogfights aren't really that far apart.

Looks like her mind is on something else, not that she just won a golf tournament.  Someone might have scored pretty well that night.

Back in the early 70's, my dad hounded my mom to take up golfing (probably to get her off
his back for golfing all the time).  One night after dinner, we headed out to the club for her
to learn golf.  At the end of only 9 holes, she had LOST 2 of his clubs.  She said, well, after
I used them, I just laid them on the ground like you told me to.  I thought you picked them up.
Lucky for him, someone turned them in the next morning (it was almost dark, couldn't find them
and she didn't know which holes she left them at).  You know...he NEVER bugged her again!
And still to this day (he's 80, she's 79), she will not say if she did it on purpose when asked
(although that twinkle in her eye and that smirk kind of give it away)
