Doesn't anyone remember a week ago when a bunch of has-been bands dropped out of a minor concert at SeaWorld because of this Blackfish movie? Am I the only one who remembers? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

Its a documentary complaining about how SeaWorld got the whales they have 40 years ago.(and other parks not related to SeaWorld) You know, now that the company has been sold several times and none of the current people had anything to do with the events of the show.

I did some googlin', and I realized that I had absorbed, somewhere, something about that orca.  Probably related to this documentary.  The bands are all news to me.  Didn't even know they were scheduled to perform or that they decided not to.  Thanks for the links.

ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha: WTF is Blackfish?

Long story short, CNN put together a documentary about the way Killer Whales are treated by Sea World.  In short - it aint to nice.  From the way they procure said critters, to they way they are trained, to the way they lash out and hurt their trainers, on and on.

CNN's claims of abuse, immoral procurement methods, treatment of their staff, staff deaths, and so on, has been well researched and documented.

Basically the documentary calls for Sea World to stop their Killer Whale shows all together, and I gotta tell you, they make a VERY compelling case.

PETA supports Domestic Terrorism, PETA is for TOTAL Animal Liberation, No dogs, no cats, no fish, no birds, no LIVESTOCK OF ANY KIND. TOTAL ANIMAL LIBERATION.

PETA is against using ANY Animal for medical testing, and even goes so far as to LIE about the advancements made with animal testing, in fact PETA's number 2, is a diabetic who uses insulin, which is derived from  animal testing and sources... but Hes Abortio... her case is special.

I can't believe it took more than ten posts for the first moron to go full derp in a PETA thread... Fark must be slipping. Next thing you know the hourly Duck Dynasty thread won't start out with ten posts from people who take great pains to let everyone know they've never watched it, but hate the content nonetheless...

I remember all that ado with Baby Shamu in the Eighties and how there was a rash of orca deaths yet the Sea World kept on saying "Don't worry, it wasn't Baby Shamu! Baby Shamu is safe!" And that was supposed to make everything okay.

But if PETA gets involved, I can imagine lots of people flocking to the park out of spite. It's like The Rush Limbaugh effect.

No. Sea World also does an enormous amount of public education, research, and animal rescue/rehabilitation. I don't think anyone loves the fact that the whales are locked up, but they are and releasing them now is not possible. Blackfish is grossly distorted to only tell one side of the story.

I saw the Blackfish documentary, and sobbed like a baby.  Before that, I was "meh" about Sea World, and figured they were doing the best they could to protect orcas, and that that sometimes required capturing them, and using them in shows.  You know, to promote conservation.

Ye gods, was I wrong.  Now I know why my ex-coworker (who used to work at Sea World) wouldn't talk about his job.  And gave me that weird look when I told him how envious of him I was.

Whales belong in the ocean, not in bathtubs.  fark, at least a dog in a kill-shelter has the chance of going for a walk with a volunteer.  These orca NEVER get to escape their cell.

1) they can be re-released into the wild.  It's happened before.  http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/07/130711-orca-killer-wh a le-canada-baby-animals-science/

2) Education? They straight up distort facts and lie during their shows in order to convince people that the whales are safer and happier in the wild.  They provide evidence of this in the documentary.

They might not be evil, but they put profit above all else, because yes, they are a business.  And I, for one, take issue with a creature that is as intelligent as the average farker and a lifespan longer than the average Detroit resident being kept in lifetime imprisonment without parole, upon birth, ripped from any family they know and tossed into a pool with orcas from other regions who don't even speak their language... yeah.  fark Sea World.

I judge zoos on a case-by-case basis.  It's a lot easier to ensure a creature that's smaller than a human has a decent habitat.  And, you know, the whole not-forcing-them-to-perform-tricks-for-food part.

So much this. Beached whales. Injured/sick dolphins, manatees, sea birds, sea lions, seals. Disturbed turtle nests. Most often, it's Sea World people doing the rescue, treatment and release.

I don't speak for whether it's wrong to keep orcas in captivity. But the good Sea World does on both coasts shouldn't be forgotten.

http://mynews13.com/content/news/cfnews13/on-the-town/article.html/co n tent/news/articles/cfn/2013/12/20/seaworld_responds_to.html

"SeaWorld's killer whales' life spans are equivalent with those in the wild. While studies continue to define the average life span of killer whales in the wild, the most recent science suggests that our killer whales' life spans are comparable - indeed, five of our animals are older than 30, and one of our whales is close to 50. "

http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/species/mammals/cetaceans/killerwhale.ht m

"Lifespan: males typically live for about 30 years, but can live as long as 50-60 years;
females typically live about 50 years, but can live as long as 80-90 years "

Even when doing damage control, Sea World fudges the truth.

In order to properly address this issue, PETA needs to put out a video of naked, wet celebrities swimming around in a tank and jumping through hoops. In fact, I insist upon it, and I'll be happy to supply a list of which celebs and models are best qualified to deliver PETA's important core message of "Hey, made ya look! There is NOTHING wrong with a good mission statement. FARK loves to bash PETA. I've seen hundreds of PETA/hate threads over the last 13 years here.

Why do so many here have such a hateful and vitriolic reaction to those who support the notion of treating animals in a humane manner?

Yeah, yeah....I have heard the stories about how kooky the PETA organization is but don't bash the concept. (I have heard crackpot stuff about M.A.D.D. too)

That's like sating the Nazis weren't so  bad because their official platform was to restore Germany to a viable world power.  Who could argue with that goal?

Seriously- there's a huge difference between a zoo and Sea World. Sea World is more of an aquatic circus, complete with hellish abuse of their performing animals, and a baffling insistence on not *learning* from the injuries and deaths of their performers, both human and animal.

'don't visit zoos'... my ass. Here, anyone sucking SeaWorld's knob, look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina_Zoo
That's a zoo. They treat their animals well. Note the vast size of the enclosures.

Then go watch Blackfish and see if you feel like white knighting for SeaWorld again.

It's not the message, it's the methods. I'm all for animals being treated with respect and care, but that doesn't mean I can't recognize what a bunch of hypocritical weirdos seem to be running PETA these days. The hate is because:
- PETA doesn't just want humane treatment for animals, it is that they do not care what harm they do humans in the process.
- They are hypocritical - you shouldn't get insulin or medical benefits from animal experimentation, but ignore that their leader is a type II diabetic who uses insulin.
- They are hypocritical - PETA affiliated facilities have euthanized many pets at its headquarters.
- PETA is closely allied with terrorists (Animal Liberation Front) who have killed people and caused massive property damage.  Think political branch and "direct action" branch, like Sinn Fein and IRA.

I could go on, but the contempt for PETA and its methods is justified.  If you are really concerned with the ethical treatment of animals, work with the ASPCA.

...and, yeah, this. For all Sea World is appalling, PETA can get stuffed as well.

Proper standards of care and treatment of animals is a cause that does not need PETA. Especially considering they kill animals in job lots when given the opportunity to do so.
