You've got to be kidding.

If not, conservative gays can march in the parade too if they disagree with this troupe.

Weak. Where's the qualifier in all your other posts equating this with other gay rights issues?

What are you talking about? You appear to think that conservative gays have a problem with this dance troupe "representing them" as well. I just pointed out that conservative gay groups have just as much right to express themselves in public as liberals do.

So? Everyone self-promotes. What's your point?

CivicMindedFive: So.... over the top LBGT type group performs in Alabama in a children's oriented Christmas parade and they are not harassed but people complain and this is a deal?  Would a Christian group in a gay pride parade in San Fran be treated better?

It depends. When I was in SF, I did check out pride and noticed a few groups did set up stands at the plaza near city hall. These are your warm fuzzy people, allies with Christ no matter who you are. However I could imagine flak against not so warm fuzzy christians out there.

Myself? I am a believer but am up and down on many subjects that come up. LGBT does not bother me. I think Science is a good thing and that Evolution is valid. I am also a right-winger but again I try to seperate myself from the current derp overload. I think people can be helped, I think taxing in the right areas is good and I think guns are cool but should be regulated in a way that makes sense.

Am I correct? It depends on who asks and who thinks I may be full of derp. As I said before, I believe in balance.

Miscellaneous thoughts:

So, basically nothing happened. Some old biddies got their panties in a twist and complained. If they hadn't complained about that, they would've complained about something else. They are probably trying to convince their children or grandchildren that they should feel traumatized by what they have seen.

In what little they showed, it looked like the young people were having a good time. The older people amused. I really didn't see anyone throwing towels over their children's heads to shield their eyes as they rushed them to the car.

The people who enjoyed the performance and parade probably went home and thought nothing more of it. Therefore, felt no reason to jump online and tell what a good time they had. People rarely do, it seems.

The group is from Mobile. They perform in and around Mobile all the time, and will continue to do so. People like them, and they will probably be in many Mardi Gras parades in the coming months. Semmes is on the outskirts of Mobile. If anyone says they didn't know what kind of act to expect, they are being... um... disingenuous.

The organizer for the parade invited an all-male group called the Prancing Elites. C'mon... you knew the score. If not, you must do your vetting by way of a veterinarian. And unless that vet was really old, they knew about the Prancing Elites too.

The arguments seem to revolve around free speech rights, gay rights, gender rights, etc. In the end, it's a bunch of guys trying to shock people so that they can get paid.

And as for self promotion, there's making a video of your performance art (or whatever you want to call it), and then there's shiating on the Koran and then posting the video to YouTube. These things are not equivalent.

/from Alabama

But they were gay! That's automatically sexualized!

How is that any different that what you're doing? Granted, you may know more of Alabama's gay community than the couple of dozen I know, but they (both black and white) are some of the most conservative gay friends I have. Are these guys really representational of that community? There really should be a vote before these guys get to carry the banner everyone else has to walk behind.

Actually, the underlines part was from someone else. The part above it was me. I'm not a member of Alabama's gay community. I'm just from Alabama. And as I pointed out... It's about what I have seen from female cheer squads both in the type of routine as well as the costumes. (So I guess we agree? I think?) I could be wrong, but I believe the next commenter was being giving a sarcastic response.

Quite frankly, I want to know why people think it's okay for females to wear things like this and perform suggestive dance routines.

As to what gays are like... Well, they're like straights, I guess. There's no one specific cookie-cutter straight or gay personality. Some people like one thing. Some people like another. I don't necessarily think it's fair to try to lump all gays or all straights together. And who says you have to be flamboyantly gay to enjoy that style of dance? It's like saying straight girls can't enjoy race cars. Yeah, I know some gay men who wear ties and suits. I know gay men who are, as one put it, "a towering inferno." Just because one group wants to be represented doesn't mean that another group can't be represented. Why the limits?

Political? Wait.... What???

You are politically grandstanding. They were doing a dance routine that was about as political as the Rockettes at Radio City. Which I saw for the very first time this year. Which was incredibly awesomely awesome. The audience was about 50% children, most under 10. The horror. The horror.

Merely being gay or being in drag or being fabulous is, on its own, not a political statement. It is a fashion statement. You are politicizing it as it makes you feel all squirmy. Which I think is hilarious. The kids don't care. They just like the glitter. My god, do little girls love glitter.

The common thread here, as you say, is that many of you are batshiat crazy and are just making stuff up.
