It is sad when people die before their time.  RIP Claire.  My prayers are for your loved ones pain.

Did anyone know that Arapahoe High School is only eight miles away from Columbine High School?

And once again, nothing will be done.  If the slaughter of little white children in an elementary school wasn't enough to push lawmakers to action, then nothing will.

Hey, our current gun control policy of "hope it doesn't happen to me or anyone I know or care about" works over 90% of the time

Lawmakers did pass a bunch of laws in Colorado, and it still didn't stop it. What did help prevent the death tally was the fact an armed guard on campus was able to respond quickly.

Meant to say "prevent the death tally from growing".

Guns are already banned on campus genius.  All those "Gun-Free" zone laws you wanted.

Oh, and this was the predictable response.  Her death is offensive on every level.  If you can't see that and have to immediately accuse me of a "progressive agenda" then you are by far the biggest douchebag there is.  Go to hell.

I wish we would just listen to Adam Carolla.

The pink ribbons, the pink shirts, the pink buttons, the pink NFL cleats...let's just take ONE year off of breast cancer fundraising.  We get it, breast cancer sucks.  Everyone.Is.Aware.

Let's take just one year off of breast cancer fundraising and put everything towards the study of mental illness.

Just one farking year....

Copy pasta'd my post from a red-lit thread.

For the millionth time, because the last 999,999 didn't seem to get through:

We have a right to own guns in this country, and that is an undisputable fact.  But with that right, comes an enormous responsibility, both to ourselves, and our neighbors.  A responsibility to ensure that all guns are purchased legally, their owners are properly trained in their use and maintenance, and that they are used in the proper context - with self-defense being the use of last resort.

To achieve this, there must - I repeat MUST - be a reasonable level of regulation and control of this commodity.  Not every idea proposed in this context will be a good one, but they are all worthy of discussion.  What we cannot do - what me must not do - is shut down any and all discourse on the subject.  Especially when the discussion is silenced out of completely irrational fears that "someone" is going to "take your guns", "tread on your freedom" or somehow call in the UN to arrest you.

Continued refusal to even discuss this, or take any meaningful action, will only push the body count higher.  How many more innocents must die before we can have that conversation?  How many more Newtowns, or Columbines, or Auroras?  HOW MANY?  C'mon NRA apologists, tell us how many more you need to see before you decide enough is enough.

The rest of us sane people will be waiting right here, ready to talk about reasonable ideas; not far-left or far-right, but reasonable ideas that can help end this madness and respect everyone's rights.  Just check your BS at the door, because the world is ready to move on without you.

That is very true, but there was also an armed guard at Columbine in 1999. It doesn't always help

Well, that's a bit of a straw man. Lots of people have said the laws passed in CO didn't stop this and, while true, they were also never designed to. The laws were about private party background checks and magazine size for semi-autos.

This kid bought a shotgun at the store.

You may as well point at the pot laws for all the relevance they have to the shooting.

What can they do? High school is already a federal penitentiary compared to when I attended some 15~20 years back. More metal detectors and gun laws aren't the answer. Legislation is not the answer.

The answer is parents paying attention to their kids, their guns, and keeping their own house in order. This starts at home. This starts with mental health. This starts with common sense.

It sucks for this girl and her family. I can't begin to imagine what my reaction would be if I lost my daughter in this manner. Still, this isn't a school or governmental issue, and can say with certainty my anger/rage would not be directed there.

The last child to die before the public insists on meaningful gun control will be hailed as a national hero.

Well the little white children should have protected by an armed teacher.

What level of meaningful action do you want that will eliminate this?

You cannot disenfranchise someone without due process. That's the bottom line. Short of eliminating the 2nd amendment, what is your solution that is so great?

Yes, yes, "for the childrens". Well, emotion aside, what will you do? Either ban guns or don't, but don't bullshiat around with half-ass measures about doing something "for the children".

The training has also changed substantially. School resource officers at Columbine were technically cops, usually demoted to desk duty for doing something terribly who largely devoted their time to truancy and smoking. And maybe banging a senior or two.

He was a senior and 18. He's been legal for a month or so I believe.

This was terrible, but. I have to ask, what kind of "meaningful gun control" would have stopped this. The gunman bought the shotgun legally, and with the exception of a very few, most gun control advocates aren't even looking at shotguns. An outright ban may have helped, or the kid may have just fashioned a homemade gun or explosive. When people are determined to do bad, they often find a way.

2013-12-21 10:53:15 PM
So is NOW the time that we can talk about gun laws?

GOOD!!

How about banning guns in schools and having metal detectors?!!

How about charging the owner of the gun or the parents of the child committing the crime with accessory??
DAMMIT the shooter was 18 so the parents are off the hook.

How are charging the school for creating a dangerous environment?

FARK IT

How about requiring all students to open carry at all times?
MORE guns is clearly the solution! Especially if less guns is not the solution!!

No, we're one law away from ending gun violence forever.

Why you are a douche   You know these shootings are not a thing that can be legislated away; yet, you want legislation to force your views on others.

How would an armed teacher have changed this scenario in any way? The shooter came upon Davis in the hallway, not in the classroom. Unless the expectation is that every student who wants to poop needs an armed faculty member with them during the process.

Sorry to shiat on your dumb talking point.

Huh. The dude from Marcellus, NY has personally co-opted the thing that happened two time zones away from him. How neat.

So who suffers more from this shooting? The Davis family or you? Do you maybe have a patronizing way to tell them to Buck up while you cycle through your grief?

Maybe the step where someone recognized he was capable of putting a gun to someones head and pulling the trigger?
