You're right, subby.  It's better to wait and see if the bird flu evolves to a more dangerous strain on its own.  When it comes to discovering treatments, nothing like the pressure of an active pandemic with a high mortality rate to get the old creative juices flowing.

Just think, one little ooopsy lab accident and POOF!, global warming is cured. So sorry that lab accident killed 5 billion people but hey!! global warming is cured.

Well, we already pulled the carbon out of the ground and put it in the atmosphere. So I guess it might effectively keep things from getting much worse...

What's really funny is that I've heard the theory that the Little Ice Age (And our coming out of it is driving at least *some* of the current warming) was caused by 90+% of the Native Americans dying from smallpox in the century or so after Columbus, and then the trees all growing back.

Marmilman: Soooo....Panic?

From what I've read about the understanding of flu generated by the Rotterdam research... Not in the next few years, but probably be ready to panic in our lifetime unless they get a workable vaccine.

Apparently, the vaccine is supposed to be developed without, y'know, any dangerous experimental viruses to test it on....

As someone recovering from the current version of the flu, I must say that this topic is not at all amusing to me...then again, after 3 days of high fever, chills, pain, and a cough that feels like I might actually expel my lungs..nothing much is funny anymore. :(

Anyone that thinks this is not for meticulous purposes is an idiot, otherwise science would let nature take its course, and the human defenses growth with it.  This is nothing more than an attempt to overwhelm the human defense against it.

Bernadette: Great news. A raccoon virus just crossed the species barrier and can now infect humans.
Raj: Why is that great news?
Bernadette: In the pharmaceutical business we have a saying: mo' infections, mo' money.

Because white settlers didn't cut down trees.

... I don't think you know what meticulous means.

Also, uh. "Nature took it's course" during the Spanish FLu pandemic, and a shiat TON of people died.

I was just thinking that, but seriously, either it'll be The Stand or Outbreak.

One way or another, we're all doomed.
