How much of Rudy Giuliani's legacy has to taint other cities that decide to enforce their outdated dancing laws?

When they outlaw dancing, only the dancers will be outlaws.

Ever had to deal with a Fire Marshal?  It's their duty in life to nitpick the shiat out of you.  And a lot of the time these ordinances are there not because of some prudish, specific opposition to dancing, but to prohibit any kind of gathering of young people (the nightclub/entertainment elements).  Some will even work with the Mayor and local military and police to harass you and threaten to shut down your business and revoke your licenses (business, restaurant, liquor, whatever).

Depends on how jerkwater you want to get.

Having spent a miserable year living in Norfolk, I highly suggest the entire city be nuked from orbit.

Fire Marshal needs to be called out and publicly shamed.  It's the only way these people are (sometimes) put in their place.

not sure.  used to have dance hall regulations here in new york which were still being enforced when i moved here 7 years ago.   not sure if they're still on the books--because i'm too lazy to google--but i know bartenders no longer tell anyone to stop bopping their heads to the jukebox tunes in fear of the establishment getting a fine from the city

I think the douchebag mayor that hired the douchebag fire marshall to begin with is probably going to hit the unemployment line first.

If the fire marshall is a civil service position, yeah, good luck with all that.

Several Norfolk businesses were told they could not have their holiday parties because it would have violated the rules of the city's "public dance hall" ordinance.

Another salvo in the War on Holiday.

Yep, there will be the official complaint filed against the fire marshal, followed by the hearing before the city council (in private, because all personnel actions must be held in private, to protect the rights of the city employee the complaint was filed against), followed by the narrowly-split vote of the city council in favor of the employee, with the majority spokesperson saying "He was only doing his job and enforcing city ordinance and state law, our hands are tied."

This is one reason the fall of the Soviet Union led to the decline of the U.S.
Used to be, some little pissant commissar pulled a corrupt stunt like this, people would be screaming "what is this, the USSR?"  Now, they just sulk and say, "I'll show him, I won't donate to his party next year..."  And next year, they forget they said that.

In the last city I lived, you know what it took for the douchebag fire Marshall to be removed? He had to die. And even while he was in a brain dead coma for two months, they still wouldn't replace him.

This. The sh*thole city I live in bans dances without a permit. Permit process brings in the fire inspection aholes. Does the ACLU here do anything about it ? No. Do the Democrats repeal the law ? No, and they run the city. Nobody gives a sh*t about a law passed specifically to screw bars where black people hang out.

IMHO if the law is wrong, it should be stricken from the books else it should be enforced to its letter. Leaving bad laws on the books opens society up for abuse. This sort of story is actually good IMHO because it motivates people to clean up the books - OTOH most people are too apathetic to actually do that so I suppose probably nothing will come of it.

If you are a business owner in today's day and age, the two people you don't piss off are the health inspector and fire Marshall. Both are insufferable pricks who were bullied in high school and believe their sole purpose in life is to make others miserable.

I have dealt with fire marshals, in several jurisdictions in Ohio.  The one's I've met with have been easy-going and business friendly, and always make a distinction between gotta-have and nice-to-have.

2013-12-21 01:24:38 PM
I dont see why they dont just reissue new invitation that say "Absolutely no dancing allowed! per order of Fire Marshall Miss Busybody."

2013-12-21 01:31:05 PM
It's teh Virginia tradition, even since before Hitler, the Soviet Union, or the Revolutionary War.

Leading a church service required a license back then, not just dance parties. Only Anglicans (Episcopalians) were licensed, anyone else could spend some time in the pokey. especially Baptists.

Baptists got themselves a special Bill of Rights items added to the Constitution given that history, so now there's separation of church and state (or so they say).

Put that on your Time Machine Bucket List.

Just before Christmas? Someone must have forgotten the plain white envelope containing pictures of dead presidents that the Fire Marshal was looking for.

It's called AHJ (Authority having jurisdiction) in essence meaning they can interpret the rules any way they see fit. You have to take it to the judge to get it overturned and often it is done under IDR (independent dispute resolution) only problem is the process is not independent since the fire marshal picks the judge.
