The Long Kiss Goodnight and Lethal Weapon should be higher on the list.

Rocky IV is considered the best Rocky film

LOL, by whom, Frank Stallone?

2013-12-21 08:43:53 AM
I am glad to see the oft-overlooked Long Kiss Goodnight.

I would omit Iron Man 3, Batman Returns, and Ghostbusters 2.

and include The Ref, Bad Santa, and Better Off Dead.

2013-12-21 08:59:43 AM
The long kiss goodnight should have been #2, personally I'd say it's a tie with Die Hard.

2013-12-21 09:01:36 AM
Also include Reindeer Games. Not a popular favorite, but it's a major guilty pleasure of mine.

"Hey Santa Claus, WELCOME TO THE TOMAHAWK!!" *blam ratatatatatatatatat!!*

calbert:  Bad Santa

Bad Santa

is a Christmas movie.  Replace it with Brazil.

Replace Batman Returns with Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang.  Replace Ghostbusters 2 with 12 Monkeys.

/And i know it has absolutely nothing even tangential to do with Christmas, every year, during the first substantial snowfall of December, I watch Fargo.

2013-12-21 09:04:32 AM
Batman Returns is a little cheesy at times but it's still better than Rocky 4.

thamike: Replace Batman Returns with Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang.

How can he go off on a tangent about Shane Black movies and not have Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang. At minimum, it was a better movie than Ironman 3.

2013-12-21 09:07:26 AM
Seconding the motion that Better Off Dead should be somewhere on there.

/sorry your mom blew up

Batman Returns is a Christmas movie.  I'm not really sure I agree that Long Kiss Goodnight is.  I need to go back and see it again.  Ghostbusters 2?  WTF?  Better Off Dead...sure it takes place during the season...but I never really thought of it that way.  I need a copy of it so I can just run it on loop though.

battle of the bulge. unfortunately i can't recall what exactly does it for me. was the cake sent to the troops meant to be for christmas? or maybe   Ricardo Montalban mentions christmas when it starts to snow and he is left to die under the tank?

I_C_Weener: Batman Returns is a Christmas movie

Batman Returns isn't dependent on it being set during Christmas. Neither is The Long Kiss Goodnight. Die Hard could have been another office party or the grand opening of the plaza. The Ref needed to be set during Christmas though.

I'm not sure I've ever seen the first Rocky movie in full, but I've seen Rocky IV like 30 times.

Oh, yeah.  I forgot all about Rocky 4.  Replace that with Die Hard 2.  And since Home Alone is by all means absolutely a Christmas movie, we might as well replace that with Nightmare Before Christmas.

Kind of hard to compare the two.

Isn't the final attack during Chrstmas Eve.  There is a holiday ball scene.  Mistletoe is deadly.  The Chrsitmas Tree lighting.  Hell that movie is a a Batman Christmas special.

2013-12-21 09:41:12 AM
I get so excited to watch Die Hard on Christmas. It was a tradition with my brother - now we just text quotes back and forth when it's on.

2013-12-21 09:49:46 AM
Ironman 3?

2013-12-21 10:03:05 AM
Just watched Die Hard. Still like the movie but really, the movie should have ended right after McClane fell down the air shaft. No way he grips onto that ledge by his fingers despite all that momentum from falling. he should have went splat. And one other thing that bothers me is that though the terrorist were supposedly firing the missile to hit the police RV from the 31st floor or so, it looked like it was being fired from a floor near ground level.

Otherwise a kick ass movie. Yipee-kay yay, Mr Falcon!

2013-12-21 10:03:17 AM
I would put Hudsucker Proxy on the list.  It is one of my favorites to watch around Christmas and New Years.

2013-12-21 10:11:20 AM
You put Trading Places on the list, mention the two male leads and not Jamie Lee Curtis' tits?????

No Lethal Weapon AND no 'The Hitcher' (1986 version)?  This list does not achieve a passing grade.

2013-12-21 10:25:57 AM
I vote Lethal weapon, and Gremlins as my favs.  The article mentions a local theater showing a double feature of LW and Gremlins.  Wish we had places like that around here.  We barely got a Raiders showing during it's 30th anniv run

Lethal Weapon is #8, and I totally forgot The Hitcher takes place at Christmas.

Also, everyone saying "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is painfully right.  But what do I know?  I'm a bear.

Holy sh*t, like I needed another reason to watch The Hitcher.  Right meow.

Also, no mention of Go?

Ho-ho-HOMELESS.

Blade Runner Indeed.

Trivia: the "tears in the rain" line was an adlib.

/Really liked LadyHawk, that might take second place in my book, but The Hitcher is a close call.

I dunno, that's sort of nitpicky. I think he bounced his way down the shaft which would have slowed down his fall. As for the rockets, they fire twice and they used the same footage for each shot, meaning the window breaks twice. One would have to be the Comic Book Guy to cite that as some sort of important flaw in the film. Think of all the fark ups that they make in modern movies that they can just fix in post with CG. Inside info...a lot.

2013-12-21 01:29:41 PM
...and I think Die Hard was more steeped in Christmas than most people think. It even had a pregnant woman with no father and there was no room for her in one of the offices. She didn't actually have her kid outside on the couch that they gave her but then that would have been too on the nose.

"The Godfather." I can't hear "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" without thinking of Luca Brasi putting on a bulletproof vest.

My Christmas Eve plan is to watch Die Hard and Die Harder, possibly accompanied by a bottle of St. Bernardus Christmas Ale.  If I am not too tired or drunk at that point, I'll throw on Lethal Weapon.  Trading Places will be watched sometime during the week between Xmas and New Years.

/I don't have Batman Returns or Home Alone

Batman Returns isn't dependent on it being set during Christmas. Neither is The Long Kiss Goodnight. Die Hard could have been another office party or the grand opening of the plaza. The Ref needed to be set during Christmas though.

The Ref

could have just as easily be set at Thanksgiving, or a wake.  Anything that causes a family to come together.

Why you no list Reindeer Games?!

2013-12-22 09:39:59 PM
DNRTFA but if Little Women isn't on that list it should be.  Great work from all involved.  The Thomas Newman Score is fantastic.  The only problem is the room always seems to get dusty in Beth's last scene.
