zerkalo: Notoriously anti-Semitic orchestra fixes 70-year-old wrongs. Wunderbar

From AP: "Under the Nazis, 13 ... By the end of World War II, about half of the Philharmonic's members had joined the Nazi party."

Justice says half the Philharmonic's members should have had their fingers broken.

English says you have no idea what the term "justice" means.

Not really 'weird', weirdest part is that it took them this long to do it.

It is not like anyone just figured out these individuals' association to the Nazis, kind of been known for a while...

Anyway...

Why was an orchestra giving awards to non-musicians?

Now it's Congresses turn to strip all the Congressional Medal of Honors awarded for the wounded knee massacre.

Um, just guessing here, how's about currying favor with those in power?

At least they changed the name from "The Vienna Hitler Youth Choir"

Indeed.

OK, while I understand the desire to do the right thing and all that, what's next? Do operas have to stop doing Wagner because he was an anti-Semite? How far are we going to have to go to prove we're really good people and we really don't hate Jews and we really hate the Nazis, see! Look what we did 70 years after it was too late!

Disavowing your Nazi past is all very nice; but howabout doing something that affects any anti-Semites and white supremacists in your ranks NOW?

This IS the most regressive orchestra of any reputation - they didn't admit a woman until 1997. And the first one was the harpist they'd been using for years. They is also controversy as they basically don't hire non-whites. They have (or had) a half-Asian, and very briefly a full Japanese dude, but the full Japanese dude ended up forced out. Yes, they're THAT racist.

Basically, they are a living reminder that Hitler was Austrian.  I am not terribly surprised that it took this long for them to disavow outright Nazis.

Q) What's the difference between Herbert von Karajan directing the Berlin Philharmonic and an antelope?
A) An antelope has its horns up front and an asshole at the rear.

They should have brought them back to life and then killed them. It'd make more sense.

Exactly, if a Japanese guy wants to be in a diverse orchestra he should go to Japan.

According to John Irving, Vienna is absolutely eat up alive with anti-Semitism.

So they've finally disassociated themselves with two guys that were convicted at Nuremberg, after almost 70 years.  Well, you know European justice, their appeals process can be dragged out, so they were giving the guys a break until a final determination was made.  "Nothing to see here, just tying up a few loose ends."

I don't think there are many non-white professional musicians in Austria, and honestly, why would they want to join an orchestra that is very well known for its Nazi past?

I mean, how could the orchestra hire non-whites if don't even apply? You can't blame them, right?

I hope your trolling. A large percentage of professional classical musicians are Asian, in fact the Austrian musicians union or whatever is like a quarter Asian. There are TONS of Asians working as classical musicians just within Austria.

The Vienna philharmonic is very prestigious despite being as close to a Nazi club as you can get away with these days, so yes, people of all colors apply. And women had been trying to get in for a very long time before they cracked and let a few in.

I sincerely hope you're trolling. Also, fark the Vienna philharmonic.
