I eagerly await the return of the sentient V-ger.

The Voyager leaving the Solar System doesn't really count as a breakthrough of 2013, it was launched years ago...

Voyager 1 was more of a 1977 scientific breakthrough.

Filling in that Drake equation one variable at a time.

/12 light years is pretty close

But of course. Only 200000 more years to go! Why, entire species can come and go in that time ....

I personally think the ability to cram serious computing power into efficient chassis (see MacBook Air) is getting amazing.

Voyager leaving the solar system is the science break through of the 1970's.  Give credit where it's due.

It's not like there's a sign out there saying "Now leaving the Solar System.  Please Drive Safely"

Can I use that MacBook Air to get online to find real computers?

Hmm. On the part about the baby being cured of AIDS, all the extracts on the articles linked to the story turn up "currently unavailable" and my google fu is failing to find anything on the doctor

That'd be engineering, not science.

As someone working in biotech, I can say it's definitely true that CRISPR technology is something that exploded out of nowhere and overnight everyone started exploring it.

Everyone's always eager for better and easier (and cheaper) methods of genome editing.

So when does it get to the machine planet and get transformed into V-Ger?

And all of their atoms could die as well.

THAT would be quite a scientific breakthrough!

Yep. I wonder how maby times Voyager will leave the solar system in 2014.
