Damn, I thought for sure he was going to become the co-host after the KILLER job he did when he substituted for Stewart.  He deserves a great career.

2013-12-20 07:42:19 PM
I'm going to miss him, but he deserves this. I wish him well .

2013-12-20 07:56:43 PM
I think the accent threw off his interviewees.  Still hard to believe they gave the answers they did.

2013-12-20 09:33:28 PM
he'll do well. a lot of former writers went on to success.

well, not a lot. but a few.

I figured they'd do something for him, but they absolutely poured it on. I loved what he did over the summer, and I think they are utter idiots at CS for not giving him his own show on the spot. HBO moved fast, and i bet they put a hell of a check under him.

2013-12-20 09:50:53 PM
I half expected them to give him a car with built-in ball warmers.

That was really nice the way John tricked him into losing his composure on TV.

He also took The Daily Show's head writer with him.

I hope they just fly over Chris and Andy and do a live action Bugle.

That would be awesome. Except during the ashes, that could get tiresome after a while.

Gonna miss him bad, but he deserves a huge audience. Farewell, hilarious limey cockney Britty correspondent; I hope HBO has something worthy of your talents.

I read that as Olivia Newton John.  I think I'm having a stroke.

You wouldn't be the first to stroke to Olivia.

Comedy Central has to be pissed that they just built up a personality and only to have him taken away by another network. Who knows what went on behind the scenes, though. They already have 2 news shows with Stewart and Colbert. How many more can you do on one comedy channel?

He was on for 7 years.  They're lucky he stayed that long.  He's good.

Great send off

Who is the production company for John Oliver's new show? Bet it's Jon Stewart's.

Yeah.  Stewart seems like a great guy to work for.

The best way to retain him would have been to make The Daily Show a two-anchor format. Something like Oliver running most of the "news" segments (with Stewart providing color commentary), and Stewart handling interviews (which he has always said is his favorite part of the show). Either that option wasn't considered, was considered and dismissed, or was proposed but lost to the money HBO offered Oliver.

I wonder if The Daily Show will experience a noticeable drop in writing quality now.

Not that I'm the most perceptive Yank, but I've worked with Brits from all accents, and I'm gonna go with "not cockney" (Not normally, at least -- I've heard him do a pidgin cockney when he's overdoing his Britishness on purpose). But what exactly his accent is? ...um... British?

Liverpudlian is the least comprehensible English of all. Glaswegian was disqualified for not even being English.

Hard to do with a comedy-style half-hour show. They may not have wanted that (I suspect that's why we've got the Colbert Report); and there isn't much room for it on CC really. It's better if he goes off to HBO and builds his own following there. First Comedy Central....then HBO...and then.....THE WORLD!!!!!

Oh dear god, that's why his voice was so farking familiar... I watched that episode earlier this week and couldn't figure out why that guy's voice kept picking at my brain as if I'd heard it before.

Aww it was so sweet. I'll miss him on TDS (as will everyone else). I hope he still has occasional bits every now and then. It would be nice to see.

Wiki says he's from Birmingham, but he went to Cambridge.  I'm inclined to call it Received Pronounciation (RP), the generic educated English accent (or at least the one that seems generic to outsiders).

Liverpudlian is the least comprehensible English of all. Glaswegian was disqualified for not even being English.

Yorkie gives Liverpudlian a run for its money on the incomprehensibility front.

Love just about everything he does. I was pretty geeked when I heard him voicinga character on my kids'new favorite show, Gravity Falls.

He voiced a cursed, homicidal wax figure of Sherlock Holmes, incidentally.

That's sad, I always liked him as James Bond. I hope whatever actor they get to replace him is as good as him or Timothy Dalton. Maybe Robert Downey Jr. would be a good pick. I liked him in Chaplin.

Rick and Morty is my new favorite show! Question. Do you guys still have the same animators? With starburns past shows it was stop motion,( Fankenhole, Moral Oral ) now its 2d. Anyway every episode so far has been great. Looking forward to more.  Too bad his character kicked the bucket, would liked to have seen more of him

Oh and ill really miss Oliver on the Daily Show. But after his stint replacing Stewart for the summer you knew he was going to get his own show and deservedly so

Yes I work at Starburns so they are still going strong.  Rick and Morty is their first push into 2D animation.  Lots of comments about Community in the thread... Rick and Morty is co-created by Dan Harmon the creator of Community (* Hums "It's a Small World").

Glad you enjoy the show! We were a bit shocked at how well the show was received.  It went from "what the hell is that" to "it's my favorite show on TV" in almost no time.  You won't believe it but the next 8 shows are just as good or better than the ones we've shown already :).

Thanks for watching!!!!

I wish him well and will miss him on TDS and hope to begin torrenting his HBO show when it shows up. That said, his sendoff kinda bugged me with Jon Stewart's (and Hollywood's) typical over the top reactions.

Loved him as the host over the summer and got to the point where I hoped Stewart would move on and hand the show to Oliver. Stewart has become a bit too cynical and a bit too acerbic, and after 10 years of watching him regularly I've started to watch less as his shtick has become less interesting. Oliver seemed so earnest and a lot less world-weary than Stewart has become, and it was refreshing.  Will track him down on HBO I guess.

2013-12-21 09:22:22 AM
We didn't much care for him for the longest time. We watch TDS on occasion (even went to a taping once), and the running comment around here was "How did they manage to find the one Brit who doesn't know how to be funny?" We'd planned to avoid the show altogether while he was hosting, but caught it one night anyway and, don't know what it was, he seemed far more entertaining as a host than he'd ever been as a commentator. So it'll be interesting to see what this new show's like.

Not as many as should have. A. Whitney Brown was brilliant, so was Ellen's brother.
