(WorldNetDaily)   Frank Wolf won his conservative district by 21% in 2012, so if a Republican wins his seat in 2014, it'll be an indicator that the GOP will win the presidency in 2016   (wnd.com) divider line 44

Anything with an R next to its name, including a head of cabbage, could win Virginia's 10th congressional district. If the Republicans *can't* win Virginia's 10th congressional district, that's an indicator that it's time for  seppuku.

Lots of old money in that district. And Robert Duvall, if I'm not mistaken.

It includes a large portion of Northern Virginia that is increasingly multicultural.  The only reason it has been a given a given for Wolf is because of Frank Wolf, not the R next to his name.  Right wing nutbags will never understand Virginia, let alone Northern Virginia, and I very much doubt even moderate Republicans will find another Frank Wolf to take the district again.  There is absolutely no way a dogmatic right winger will ever take that slot.

And I think Duvall moved out.

To illustrate: McCauliffe won Loudon, Fairfax, and Prince William this election, handily.  So did Kaine.  So did Obama. In population, this negates the green acre teatards in Fauquier and Clarke.  They simply don't have the numbers.  And knowing the GOP, they are going to try and fly the opposite direction from kindly philanthropic centrism that kept Wolf in office.

If i was a blathering right wing kneebiter, the last place I'd pick to make winner-gets-all declarative masturbatory statements about the presidency is Northern Virginia.  Stick with Missouri, guys. It's easy.

Except that after redistricting they've seriously cut back on Fairfax presence and added Frederick and Warren. The 10th is very hard for a Democrat to win. Heck, even before redistricting, in 2008 with an Obama coattail, Feder lost by 16%. It WAS a winnable district. Wolf pretty much waited until redistricting to retire so that the office would stay (R).

No, he maintains a very large, very beautiful farm in the Plains, which is near Warrenton. He also runs on the Libertarian/conservative side of things, which a lot of people don't realize.

But the reason Cuccinelli was able to quickly close the gap in late October may be a game-changer for years to come: The Obamacare disaster.

What are these people going to hang their hopes on next July when the ACA, website and all, is functioning without a hitch?

2013-12-20 12:49:16 PM
Oh, and Romney won the district 50-49. I won't say the district is the GOP's to lose - EW Jackson probably wouldn't win it. And Cuccinelli carried the district over McAuliffe. A bad GOP candidate and a good Democratic candidate can result in a Democratic victory. But all things being equal, the GOP wins it.

They're hoping the memory sticks.

The thing is, the GOP traded a sweep in VA for a chance nationally in 2014. It's been interesting to see the GOP compromise a lot more lately.

Republicans are going to sweep in 2014.  Every political office, all over the country, will belong to the GOP.  And the first order of business will be to impeach the democrat usurper currently defiling the presidency, repealing Islamascam in its entirety, and outlawing the democrat party so that this Never. Happens. Again.

The Washington Post called the 74-year-old "a vocal and sometimes lonely advocate for oppressed religious minorities, particularly Christians in Egypt, Syria and Pakistan."

Really?  A "lonely" advocate?
I suppose I'm the only one whose ever seen Bachmann whine about how Christianity in the US is under attack because some other Christian. living in a country she couldn't find without googling and adhering to a denomination she'd find heretical if they weren't useful as a talking point, was mugged?

I'm wondering what they're going to be hanging their hopes on next July, when 99% of the people signing up for Obamacare have done so already and will never need to use the website again.

IMO, Fauquier is the new Loudoun -- upper middle class conservatives fleeing further out and all the alleged traffic (well that's real), iniquity, and (ONLY in some cases) the blah people. In the next 15-20 years, you'll find western Prince William, Fauquier, and Stafford turning more liberal.

With that said ... the "Green Acres" parts of Fauquier were where McAuliffe generally did the best -- The Plains actually went for McAuliffe and Leeds (Markham/Hume) only went 50-46 for Cooch. Old Town Warrenton was sorta close too. Cooch did the best among the new developments and such in the southern/eastern part of the county.

Wolf did well (for Republicans) to retire in a midterm. Not sure if it was a coincidence or not, but he did announce his retirement a few days after John Foust (Fairfax County Supervisor) announced his intent to run. This would mark the first real opponent Wolf's had to face in YEARS; let's face it, random Georgetown professors and older activists are almost paper candidates, add on Wolf's 100% class act behavior through his 30+ years of service and Wolf wins with 60%+ of the vote routinely.

If it were 2016, between the higher turnout in a Presidential election and the growing D-izing of Northern VA, I'd actually rate VA-10 as a tossup or barely leaning Republican between two otherwise non-terrible candidates (Cooch was maybe a 8/10 on the terrible scale, McAuliffe was a 6/10. Jackson was a 9/10 probably.)

As it stands, I'd rate this as a strong lean for the GOP to hold. BUT, you never know what the randomness of a VA-10 GOP convention is going to hold, what with 30+ years of frustrated ambition among the local elected grandees (9 Loudoun supervisors, several General Assembly members, whoever from out in the Shenandoah Valley feels like running, etc.)

Among the D's, Kristen Umstattd (Leesburg Mayor) and John Foust (Fairfax Supervisor) are probably the highest-profile elected figures what with Mark Herring getting elected AG and everything. Seeing as Foust's already declared, and I can't see Mayor Umstattd running, I suspect it'll be Foust versus whoever emerges from the GOP convention.

Haven't we covered area vs population when it comes to elections exhaustively on Fark?

Anyway, to avoid that silliness, my point was more geared to the fallacy that any Republican can replace Wolf and the Democrats don't stand a chance in the 10th district. This is bullsh*t, if they run another junior freakshow, which they inevitably will.  Wolf was a centrist.  An actual centrist.  They have nobody to replace him with.

Jeff Barnett is actually a quality candidate who had the misfortune to run in the GOP backlash of '10. I don't think he could have won in '08 - he also had the problem of being new to the political scene. That, and the VADP spends just about nothing against Wolf. They'll do so this time.

Back in 2008 I canvassed for Obama in Wolf's district (being a Marylander makes that my only influence in national politics).  I was told that Wolf had a record of 99% voting with Bush (the least) but an unbreakable history of servicing the district.

Haven't noticed much more since then, but I do remember him triple-dog-daring the tea party to primary him.  Something about tax increases being on the table in some remotely improbable fashion.  Note that this was before gerrymandering, but if the Rs try to put someone in who is remotely as conservative, they are in trouble.
