With how brainwashed the people there are, they'd probably commit suicide after failing to make the team for letting down Dear Leader.

Me thinks he won't have many takers. Rocks and cabbage do not a healthy diet make.

You know......I would be just a tad hesitant to visit a dictator so shortly after he's killed his uncle.  But I guess that's just me.

Or so it will be reported by the state-run news.

Well, didn't his dad who never played golf in his life get a hole in one when he tried it?  The shot was like 300 yards in a hurricane too.

He sure did.  Back in like 2004 or something.  Athleticism runs in the family.

I think he shot 8 holes in one the first game he played.

He also could beat up a hurricane. Except Hurricane Kim

The winners will be executed after the game against South Korea.

I know Rodman is well known for being a dumbass, but I still can't understand how he could ignore what the Un regime does to the NK people.

Does he not know? not believe it's true? honestly not care? what the hell is going on there?

He's palling around with a mass murderer of the very worst kind. He should be pelted with rotten vegetables as soon as he steps foot back here in America. What an asshole.

I am actually more shocked the state department lets him go. Unless the CIA is getting intel from him (even without his knowledge), which is certainly possible...

2013-12-20 09:34:17 AM
Maybe he's trying to build rapport from which dialogue can occur?  It could well be that the State Department is encouraging this; after all, someone on a friendly basis with Kim is better than a completely adversarial relationship.  Quite a Pollyanna mindset, but I really don't think this is going to make the difference between an evil dictator standing or falling.

The last thing Un would do is give the US a clear and valid reason to blow Pyongyang into oblivion. Worst case is he's held for food ransom

This.  The best part of Rodman ran down the crack of his mommy's ass and ended up a brown stain on the sheets.

The NK team will go on a road show, and get their asses handed to them.  Rodman will take the blame for embarrassing the country and end up in prison.  I like where this train wreck is heading....

Rodman is going into the Darwin hall of fame eventually. I don't think I would hang out with someone who just killed his girlfriend and his uncle, nomatter how cool he thought I was.

I'm well aware of North Korea's human rights abuses but I can't quite follow Rodman taking a sudden interest in the country automatically means he's an asshole who fully supports the regime. We've given the Norks the "bad dog, go in your kennel" treatment for several decades now and it hasn't improved the situation one iota. Rodman's a naïve dolt, sure, but I'll hold off on calling him worse for now,

Heck, if more interest and passion goes into North Korean basketball, that only (possibly) provides more opportunities for national team members to play in international tournaments which means opportunities for defection...are you going to say that's a bad thing?

What if, as mentioned before, this is all planned with the CIA and Rodman is a key contributor in bringing down one of the worst regimes in history.  Rodman is written into the history books as a hero.  Who would of predicted that 20 years ago?!?

Killer Cars: which means opportunities for defection...are you going to say that's a bad thing?

If you defect in North Korea, your entire extended family gets put in a detention camp for the rest of their lives, if they aren't executed.  So you tell me if you think that's a bad thing.

Killer Cars: but I can't quite follow Rodman taking a sudden interest in the country automatically means he's an asshole who fully supports the regime.

Rodman, who has visited North Korea twice this year and describes Kim as his "friend,"   "He's a good dad and has a beautiful family," "he want Obama to do one thing... call him."  "I love him, I love him, the guy's awesome.  "I saw people respect him and his family."

You don't think a message of his people respect him, rather than only pretend to respect him out of fear he will execute them and their entire extended family meets the definition of supports the regime?

That's the "naïve dolt" part of Rodman's "charm". He honestly thinks playing kiss-ass is part of some larger diplomatic scheme which is total waste of time. Again, I chalk that to total ignorance up to this point.

And yet several thousands have defected over the years. I donate regularly to an NGO which helps refugees out of China into various safe houses in SE Asia before eventually integrating into South Korea. Should I not do that, then?

If I gave in to my inner grammar nazi, this one would send me into Kim Jong Un-level fits of anger and rage. This is worse than you clods that add apostrophes to every plural noun that ends with a vowel.

/I'd send em all to Camp 14

We're talking about Dennis Rodman.  Let's be honest, there isn't anything in the entire world he could wrong do that you would not chalk up to ignorance.  But you don't understand, you characterize it as a "total waste of time."  It is from the perspective of accomplishing something good.  It is not a waste of time if you are Kim Jong-un.  Now he has Dennis Rodman coming back to the US telling our public what a great guy he is.  I mean literally, Dennis is calling him a great guy.  If you are actually aware of the atrocities going on in North Korea, then you would realize ignorance or not, characterizing Kim Jong-un as a "great guy" makes Dennis an asshole.

Killer Cars: And yet several thousands have defected over the years.

Heliovdrake linked a spectacular (45 minute) documentary in the NK thread yesterday:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxLBywKrTf4

I sure as fark didn't intend to spend 45 minutes watching all of it but it was that good.  One of the guys who defected was being interviewed.  The reason he defected was because he was on a military shift with another guy and the other guy made a mistake in a message he sent to South Korea.  That meant both of them would be executed.  That's why he defected, because otherwise he was dead.  When asked what happened to his family he replied "I don't want to talk about it."

So I don't think your basketball diplomacy defection idea is such a great one.

2013-12-20 11:19:15 AM
North Korea's repeated famines have left most of the country's population growing up shorter and in poorer health. Good luck finding talent.

In Schmoozing with North Korea's dictators Rodman can't do more harm than Carter.

2013-12-20 11:19:21 AM
Why do I think that, whenever Rodman visits North Korea, Kim Jong Un asks him to wear the wedding dress?

There aren't a lot of good ideas to come up with unfortunately, in regards to NK. The CIA idea/joke regarding Rodman doesn't work only because it's pretty obvious reading between the lines that the major powers in the region and the US don't really want the regime outright toppled, either, as there will be significant economic and political shocks with 20+ million people crossing international borders and/or needing immediate, new governance. It's a cold, heartless reality.

"You know, they're still afraid to come here, but I'm just telling them, you know, don't be afraid man, it's all love, it's all love here," Rodman said after the tryouts at the Pyongyang Indoor Gymnasium. "I understand what's going on with the political stuff, and I say, I don't go into that venture, I'm just doing one thing for these kids here, and for this country, and for my country, and for the world pretty much."

2013-12-20 11:27:16 AM
now hold on there..
of course rodman is a nincompoop, and glorious leader is a dangerous fat psycho
that being said
we're finally paying attention to the plight of the people
we are letting ourselves be educated about the horrors there.
the prisons and murders and brainwashing and torture
all the things we suspected but never discusses because great leader was just a punchline

so maybe, through all this jackassery..something good will come of it
